Dear friends and supporters of the Czech Centre Rotterdam,
at the end of 2024, we had to make a major and difficult decision to close the Czech Centre Rotterdam. The network of Czech Centres is not static; it responds to global developments and changes in foreign policy.

Czech language courses for students from the Netherlands will now be provided by the Czech Centre Brussels. This centre will also serve as a meeting space—both physical and online—for those interested in Czech culture in the region.

Many thanks to Director Hana Schenk for her excellent and long-standing work for the Czech Centre. She has made a personal and invaluable contribution to fostering cultural ties with the Netherlands, which will always remain part of the DNA of these relationships. We would like to thank all those who have contributed to the operation of the Czech Centre in Rotterdam. Special thanks to all the followers and fans of Czech culture in the Netherlands. Czech culture is not disappearing from the Netherlands; cultural exchange will continue to be supported by the Czech Embassy in The Hague.

We would also like to thank all the artists who have contributed to spreading the good name of the Czech Republic in the Netherlands through the Czech Centre Rotterdam.

Vážení přátelé a příznivci Českého centra Rotterdam,
ke konci roku 2024 jsme museli udělat zásadní a nelehké rozhodnutí o ukončení činnosti České centra Rotterdam. Síť Českých center není trvale neměnná, reaguje na dění ve světě a na vývoj v zahraniční politice.

Kurzy češtiny pro studující z Nizozemska bude poskytovat České centrum v Bruselu. To se zároveň stane setkávacím prostorem - fyzickým i online - pro zájemce o českou kulturou v regionu.

Velký dík patří ředitelce Haně Schenk za její vynikající a dlouholetou práci pro České centrum. Má osobní zásluhu na rozvíjení kulturních vazeb s Nizozemskem, což navždy zůstane v DNA těchto vztahů. Děkujeme všem, kteří se na provozu Českého centra v Rotterdamu podíleli. Speciální poděkování věnujeme všem sledujícím a fanouškům české kultury v Nizozemsku. Česká kultura z Nizozemska nemizí, o kulturní výměnu se bude nadále starat i české velvyslanectví v Haagu.

Děkujeme touto cestou také všem umělkyním a umělcům, kteří se prostřednictvím Českého centra Rotterdam podíleli na šíření dobrého jména Česka v Nizozemsku.

✨GELUKKIG NIEUW JAAR 2025✨
🔴 Zoals u weet vierde het Tsjechisch centrum Rotterdam dit jaar haar 30-jarig jubileum. Het is een trieste realiteit dat het centrum datzelfde jaar haar succesvol programma moet beëindigen. Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat we erin geslaagd zijn interessante projecten uit te voeren en Tsjechische makers te ondersteunen. Bovendien hebben we gestreefd naar langdurige partnerschappen en hopen we dat we erin geslaagd zijn om iets tot stand te brengen dat in de komende jaren vruchten zal afwerpen. Hartelijk dank voor jullie steun en belangstelling.
🔵 Wij wensen u een heel gelukkig nieuwjaar en hopen dat u de Tsjechische cultuur in Nederland blijft tegenkomen.

CZECHOSLOVAK NEW WAVE 🎬 FILMS VAN DE WEEK 9
Deze week nemen we afscheid van het prachtige overzicht van de jaren 60 Tsjechoslowaakse vernieuwende filmografie in KINO Rotterdam. Tegelijkertijd markeert de laatste projectie ook het definitieve einde van Tsjechisch centrum Rotterdam. Ga ook deze films zien, een herkansing komt niet.
Maandag 👂🏻 EAR
De weelderige feesten van de communistische heersers staan ​​in contrast met de paranoïde realiteit die hun dagelijks leven beheerst. Het nachtelijke gesprek van man en vrouw na terugkeer van het feest in de luxe villa wordt gekenmerkt door de angst voor het 'oor': “Waar kunnen we praten?” "Nergens." Er is een moment van waarheid in een relatie die wordt gekenmerkt door macht. Uiteraard werd de film per direct verboden voor de komende twintig jaar.
Vrijdag 🤦🏻‍♀️ A WEDDING UNDER SUPERVISION op de originele 35mm film!
De tragikomedie over verkrachtingsaanmelding geeft respectloos en toch op elegante wijze commentaar op kwesties van de menselijke natuur. Het verhaal wordt versterkt door uitstekend acteerwerk, gebrek aan respect voor de autoriteiten en begrip van menselijke karakters. In een komisch formaat dat vandaag de dag ondenkbaar is, laat het zien hoe vernederend een onderzoek naar verkrachting is.
Zaterdag 🩸 VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS 1969 – op de originele 35mm film!
Poëtische horror voor volwassenen op de vleugels van "lage" erotische connotaties gecombineerd met een variatie op gotische romans. De weelderige fantasie van Ester Krumbachová en de prachtige kleurencamera van Jan Čuřík completeren de verontrustend mooie, ornamentele wereld van Jaromil Jireš' film. Het verlangen om het geheim van haar eigen afkomst te onthullen leidt Valerie naar een fantasiewereld die wordt bewoond door personages wier status ongrijpbaar is en zowel gebaseerd is op de realiteit als op de angsten en wensen van het meisje. Sommigen streven naar haar maagdelijkheid. Na het overwinnen van dramatische en wonderlijke avonturen ontpopt zich dit dertienjarig meisje tot een jonge vrouw.

A Little Bit of History at the End of the Year
Did you know? If you are in The Hague, don't miss the plaque commemorating Elisabeth Stuart, daughter of King James I of England, and Friedrich V of the Palatinate, grandson of Willem van Oranje.
After their brief reign as King and Queen of Bohemia, they fled from Prague via Silesia to The Hague in 1621, earning the titles "The Winter King and Queen."
This plaque, installed in collaboration with Dutch art historian and collector Willem Jan Hoogsteder, now graces the building that housed the couple during their exile from 1621 until their deaths (now the Raad van State (Council of State), Kneuterdijk 22). It serves as a reminder of their fascinating story and the historical links between Czechia, the Netherlands and our shared European heritage.
A wonderful piece of history, right here in The Hague! 🏛️✨

LUKÁŠ SLAVICKÝ IN UTRECHT
👨🏻‍🎓 In februari 2025 komt jonge schilder Lukáš Slavický als gastdocent van het AIR Pastoe programma naar de Utrechtse kunstacademie HKU Beeldende Kunst.
🥇 Deze nieuwe ervaring maakt deel van de prijs die hij van Česká centra/Czech Centres als winnaar van de Prize of Art Critique for Young Painting 2024 voor kunstenaars onder 30 jaar ontvangt. Dit is een belangrijke aanvulling op zijn verblijf gericht op het leren kennen van de Nederlandse kunstscene.
🎨 Lukáš Slavický (*1996) werkt met schilderijen, objecten en video. Hij studeerde af aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Praag. Sinds 2020 exposeert hij regelmatig.

CZECHOSLOVAK NEW WAVE 🎦 FILMS VAN DE WEEK 8 🎬
Het Tsjechische filmfeest in KINO Rotterdam gaat door. Deze week met drie films die tot de kern van de Tsjechische new wave horen waarvan een Oscar-winnaar. Alle drie bieden een ongebruikelijk blik op de Tsjechische mentaliteit.
Maandag 🎺 INTIMATE LIGHTING 1965
Een succesvolle muzikant uit de hoofdstad is met een aantrekkelijke minnaar op het platteland aangekomen en het ontbreekt schijnbaar aan niets. Het kamerverhaal van Ivan Passer met gênante en grappige momenten maakt indruk met een poëtische camera, goed gehoorde dialogen uit het echte leven en succesvolle vertolkingen van niet-acteurs in de hoofdrollen.
Vrijdag 🚂 CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS 1966
Het is een van de meest geprezen titels van de jaren zestig en die in 1968 de Oscar won. Het debuut van regisseur Jiří Menzel wordt gezien als de bekroning van de Tsjechoslowaakse new wave. De bewerking van de novelle van Bohumil Hrabal is het verhaal van een timide jongeman die aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog een man probeert te worden in de dromerige wereld van een Centraal-Boheems treinstation.
Zaterdag 🍻 FIREMEN´S BALL 1968
Een brandweerbal in een provinciestadje ter ere van het afscheid van de voorzitter. De lyrische en verzachtende toon is verdwenen en alleen de consistente blootstelling van de negatieve kanten van de menselijke natuur bleef over. Dans, tombola, schoonheidswedstrijd. En het vuur. Een meesterwerk van het trio Forman-Papoušek-Passer.

MYSTERIEUZE VERHALEN VAN KAREL ČAPEK KRIJGEN EEN VORM VAN EEN STRIPBOEK 👣
📘 Striptekenaar Milan Hulsing heeft Tsjechische wortels. Hij publiceert strips en boeken sinds de jaren '90 en wilde met dit boek eindelijk zijn liefde voor Karel Čapek en Tsjechië tonen. Zijn nieuwe boek Voetsporen zal begin januari 2025 uitkomen bij Concerto Books. Het is een collectie bewerkte verhalen, vijf in totaal, naar mysterieuze verhalen van Karel Čapeks uit 1929 die psychologische en metafysische kanten hebben.
❄ Ook zal Hulsing vanaf 11 januari in Delft een maand lang een expo Voetsporen hebben bij over zijn hele oeuvre waar het boek gepresenteerd word.

Today is what we call Golden Sunday in Czechia, the last Sunday before Christmas. To make your festive moments even more special, we have prepared a true treasure for you on the occasion of the Year of Czech Music. We bring you a recording of a concert by the Czech Philharmonic Česká filharmonie .
Led by Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov, the orchestra performs Smetana's My Country from Carnegie Hall, one of the world's most renowned stages. The recording is available at least until the end of January 2025.

🇨🇿Today, with the Czech community in the Netherlands, we commemorated the 190th anniversary of the first performance of Kde domov můj/Where My Home Is on 21 December 1834. This beautiful song, which later became the Czech national anthem, continues to hold a special place in our hearts.

Its composer, František Škroup, spent his final years in Rotterdam, where he now rests. Ever since reading Kde domov můj by Markéta Pluskalová Dočekalová, we have developed a bit of a crush on František!

This special gathering was also the last public event organised by the Czech Centre in the Netherlands Tsjechisch Centrum Nederland. Thank you to everyone who braved the dreadful weather and made time during this hectic festive season to be with us.

We are extremely grateful that, in these final moments, we have grown so closely united. 💜💜💜

🎄 Czech Christmas Trees in the Netherlands: A Festive Celebration of Tradition and Craft 🎄

This festive season, Czech Christmas trees with beautiful hand-blown glass decorations are once again bringing a touch of Czech heritage to public spaces across the Netherlands. This annual project by Tsjechisch Centrum Nederland, Visit Czechia and the Czech Embassy delights visitors with its charm and craftsmanship, spreading Christmas cheer and showcasing the skill of Czech glassmakers.

Looking Back at the Christmas concert🎄🎶💜🇨🇿

This year’s Year of Czech Music Rok české hudby could only be concluded with a traditional Christmas concert. It feels poetic that the very first event of the Czech Centre Tsjechisch Centrum Nederland was a Christmas concert held in The Hague in 1993 —and now, the final one took place in the same city, filling the church to capacity.
A special thank you to the Ensemble PAX, whose incredible talent as musicians brought this concert to life. Your performances made the evening truly extraordinary.
A heartfelt thank you as well to everyone who attended, for your kind words and presents, and to all my colleagues who made this concert possible—our partners at the Czech Embassy, CzechTourism Visit Czechia, Kloosterkerk and of course, a special thanks to Mirka van Gils Slavíková, our very own Czech Janny van der Heijden and Mary Berry, for her delicious Christmas cookies!

The Christmas atmosphere was made even more magical by a beautifully decorated Christmas tree with hand-blown glass ornaments crafted by Rautis - Přátelé perličkových ozdob.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. We are delighted to have made this final concert truly memorable! One of our guests summed it up perfectly and we would like to share her words with you:

“A trio of talented young musicians playing baroque instruments delivered a beautiful and highly captivating baroque programme, featuring compositions by European composers and lesser-known Czech composers of the 17th century. The outstanding interpretations by the young soprano Kristina Archer, accompanied by Petr Drozd on the choir organ and Anežka Drozdová on the traverso, left a profound impression on us.
The annual Christmas concert has traditionally been well attended, but this year’s audience was significantly larger than in previous years. Nearly all the seats in the Kloosterkerk in The Hague were filled. The turnout exceeded all my expectations.
This should be seen as not only a manifestation of interest in Czech culture in The Netherlands but also as a show of support for the Czech Centre in The Hague, which has successfully promoted Czech and European culture for 31 years.”
