You are invited to the opening of the new art exhibition ‘𝘼𝙙𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖’𝙨 𝙜𝙚𝙢, 𝙗𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙤𝙤𝙣’𝙨 𝙝𝙪𝙚, 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙝𝙮𝙢𝙣, 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙬’ on June 2nd from 16:00!🥂

Encounter in the third series of “ontmoetingen”, works by 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙖 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙘, 𝙋𝙖𝙪𝙡 𝙂𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣, 𝙎𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙖 𝙅𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙪𝙨 and 𝙅𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙨. In this group exhibition not only does the viewer meet the work, but the works also meet each other. The makers invite visitors to experience how the different works interact with each other. “Encounter” is a series of exhibitions in which young artists with a relation to South Limburg are given a platform. It is intended as a meeting place for their work, but also as a meeting place between makers.

This exhibition brings together visual artists working around the themes of nature and rituals, combining interdisciplinary mediums. Here you will discover paintings, photography, video, ceramics, and (growing!) installation art. Through this encounter, visitors are prompted to engage deeply with the artworks, contemplating their own understanding of nature and the various ways it can be interpreted and represented in art. Additionally, the exhibition fosters a sense of community among the artists, encouraging collaboration, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas.

This piece, ‘𝐁𝐨𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐣𝐮𝐠‘, is a true work of ♡ This beautiful sculpture (64x54x16cm) is made in bronze by Kirill Protopopov (2007).

★ The sculptures of Kirill Protopopov, decorated with ornaments, colored smalt and semi-precious stones, resemble a museum interior. The decorative surface, the shimmer of polished bronze, colored inserts, the use of gypsum as a decorative element to reveal the texture and ornamental pattern on the surface, the finest finishing - all this in the work of a talented sculptor attracts the eye and gives rise to imagination.

☞ The 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐣𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧 dates from the thirteenth century. The current castle dates from the eighteenth century and was built on the foundations of its medieval predecessor. 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐣𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧 was one of the residents, as was 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧. Artist 𝐀𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐚𝐬 and pianist 𝐇. 𝐁𝐢𝐞𝐳𝐞𝐧 lived in the castle.

☞ Over the centuries, the castle has suffered a lot from 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞. Underground mining caused considerable subsidence in the area. Just like the nearby Strijthagen mill (Strijthagermolen), the castle has suffered considerably. It was therefore in a somewhat dilapidated condition when artist 𝐀𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐚𝐬 moved in in 1952.

☞ 𝐀𝐚𝐝 𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐚𝐬 is originally from Rotterdam, where he experienced the bombing of 1940 up close. During the war, the German occupier disapproves of his work and he ends up in prison. After his release in 1944, he fled to South Limburg with his wife. Here too, his work aroused resistance, especially among the church authorities. It was only in the 1960s that his confrontational, expressive style became more appreciated. In 1972, De Haas died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 51. His wife and seven children remained at the castle. When the family leaves, years of vacancy and decay follow. A major restoration in the 1980s saved the complex from destruction.

☞ Up to 2015, all the monuments in the Strijthagen complex have been abandoned to the point of the gardens resembling a jungle, and the interiors, well, in very bad shape. Since 2015, Artland has been taking great care of the Strijthagen complex, with much love ♥️ Now, Strijthagen is flourishing and many people enjoy it!
