Today, the University Women of Europe (UWE) was pleased to host the second session of its National Female Academics (NFA) Webinar Series, featuring the Swiss Association of Female Academics (SVAF/ASFDU).

We were delighted to welcome the Co-Presidents Mrs. Ruth Nieffer and Mrs. Claire Daams, who provided an insightful presentation on their association's history, mission, and activities.

Founded in 1924, the Swiss Association of Female Academics has played a significant role in promoting women's interests in academia and advancing gender equality in Switzerland.

The presentation highlighted:
🔹 A century of commitment to women in higher education and research;
🔹 Six active chapters across Switzerland and a network of more than 430 members;
🔹 Advocacy and initiatives promoting gender equality and women's rights;
🔹 Annual programs aligned with key UN themes;
🔹 Current challenges, including membership renewal, engaging younger generations, and attracting women from diverse academic fields

A particularly engaging discussion followed on the critical issue of violence against women and femicide. Participants exchanged experiences and explored effective awareness-raising and prevention strategies.

🧡Mrs. Ruth Nieffer shared inspiring examples from Switzerland's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, including innovative collaborations with local bakeries to distribute information on emergency support services and resources for women experiencing violence.

The NFA Webinar Series continues to provide a valuable platform for UWE member associations to share their achievements, challenges, and best practices while strengthening collaboration across Europe.

🙏 Thank you to the Swiss Association of Female Academics and to all participants for an enriching and inspiring session.

🇹🇷✨ On April 22, 2026, the Turkish Association of University Women (TAUW) proudly opened its very first school in Hatay’s Serinyol neighborhood, just ahead of National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

Built after the devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, this 8-classroom middle school, named Gazi Mustafa Kemal, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and solidarity. Made possible through national and international support, it represents more than a building, it represents a future.

TAUW President Meral Güler highlighted a simple but powerful truth: a city truly recovers when its children can dream again. Ensuring equal access to safe, quality education for every child is the foundation of rebuilding society.

This project was inspired by a moment that left a lasting impact, a young girl, standing in a damaged schoolyard, sharing her dream of becoming an astronaut. Her school had been destroyed, but her dream lived on.

💫📚Today, that dream and many others have a place to grow again.

📌Strasbourg, 14–17 April!

President Dr. Başak Yılmaz Ovacık attended the Conference of INGOs General Assembly of the Council of Europe, representing the University Women of Europe (UWE), together with UWE Vice President Mrs. Ines Dahnal.

The General Assembly brought together civil society organisations from across Europe to exchange perspectives, share ongoing initiatives, and strengthen cooperation on key priorities including human rights, democracy, and gender equality.

UWE’s participation reflects its continued engagement in European-level dialogue and its commitment to contributing to discussions that shape inclusive and forward-looking policies. The Assembly also provided an opportunity to connect with partners and reinforce collaboration across the NGO community.
