The Corn Islands Virtual Library Historical Archives of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island, Caribbean Nicaragua

The Corn Islands Virtual Library is a cultural and academic initiative dedicated to conserving and promoting the history, culture, and traditions of the Corn Islands through research, online platforms, and community engagement. Serving as a digital repository, it safeguards vital information about the islands’ identity and gives students, academics, researchers, and the general public access to books, articles, maps, and other materials that highlight the heritage of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island in the Caribbean of Nicaragua. The project was founded on August 19, 2021, and the website officially launched on May 1, 2023. It later expanded on June 27, 2025, with the creation of The Corn Islands Virtual Museum, which showcases digital exhibitions of archaeological artifacts, traditional objects, historical photographs, and other visual materials that reflect the islands’ history. Managed and funded by the STS Initiative, the Virtual Library aims to preserve and promote the identity of the Corn Islands while meeting academic needs. Its content comes from independent research, in-person oral history interviews, and contributions from local historians, cultural institutions, and academic partners.

The Corn Islands Virtual Library project was founded five years ago today, on 19 August 2021.

With the purpose of safeguarding and promoting the culture, traditions, and history of the Corn Islands in Caribbean Nicaragua, the project was created in 2021. Its main website was launched in 2023, followed by the Virtual Museum in 2025.

The contributions of the islands’ community, along with the collaboration of local historians, scholars, friends, and institutions, have been essential to the work we continue to do for the Corn Islands.

Knowing where we come from is essential to knowing who we are and where we are going. That is why we believe in gathering and preserving every piece, every story, and every fragment of what makes us who we are as Corn Islanders.

In a world of rapid technological advancement, digitizing our heritage has become increasingly important, not only as a way of preserving our history and culture, but also as a means of providing students, teachers, and the wider community with access to information and resources about our islands.

Our gratitude goes to everyone who has shared, contributed, supported, and been part of this journey. This work is for the people of the Corn Islands and for present and future generations.

Here’s to many more years of preserving our roots and telling our stories.
