By MURNA PANYA
The Ministry of Water Resources on Thursday, March 26, 2026, joined the global community to commemorate World Water Day, with a strong call for gender inclusion in water access and management.
The event, held in collaboration with the WASH Sector, was themed “Water and Gender,” highlighting the urgent need to address inequalities affecting women and girls.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Malam Hassan Modibbo, described access to clean water as a fundamental human right and a critical driver of gender equality. He noted that women and girls bear the greatest burden of water scarcity, often spending long hours sourcing water for domestic use.
He emphasized the need for sustained investment in water supply and sanitation infrastructure, stressing that inclusive policies are essential to ensure equitable access for all. He also advocated for the active involvement of women in water governance and decision-making processes.
The Permanent Secretary called on government agencies, development partners, and communities to strengthen collaboration toward achieving sustainable water management and improved living conditions.
Also speaking, the Adamawa State WASH Sector Coordinator, Kabiru Saidu, thanked the Ministry and sector partners for their continued support and collaboration.
The event underscored the collective responsibility of WASH sector partners to bridge gender gaps in water access and promote a more inclusive and sustainable future.
