KNOWING IME OKON PART 2
.. Serving - The Passion of a True Leader

By Enwono-Abasi Elisha

If you visit him and he serves you like a waiter in a five-star hotel, do not mistake it for a political performance. It is not. It is an innate quality that has defined his personality long before he ventured into politics, and neither office nor status has taken it away. It is a familiar gesture, not only to family and friends but also to complete strangers.

Ambition and leadership merely provide a platform for such rare qualities to become more visible. They do not create them.

So, if you find him standing with a bottle of drink in one hand and a plate of pepper soup in the other, do not be embarrassed or assume it is for public display. It is simply who he is.

Ime Okon is often uncomfortable sitting down to eat while others are yet to be served. That is his nature.

Many may imitate such gestures to create political impressions, but there are leaders who are genuinely born to serve.

Perhaps that is why his personal interventions to ease the burdens of constituents come so naturally.

Take the case of Lemmy Hilda Archibong, a Guidance and Counselling student at the University of Uyo. Faced with overwhelming hardship after losing both her parents and a brother, her dream of completing her education appeared to be slipping away. Hope was fading.

When Ime Okon learned about her situation, he could not remain indifferent. True to his nature, he acted without delay. He immediately directed that an educational support package be put in place to sustain her throughout her university education.

Then there is Giver Utibe Effiong, a student of Electrical Engineering at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, whose modest apartment was destroyed by fire, leaving him devastated after losing his personal belongings while pursuing his academic goals.

The list of such interventions is endless.

So, when you see Ime Okon serving people, understand that he is not acting for the cameras. He is simply living out a lifelong value. He prefers to sit down for his own meal only after ensuring that others have been served.

True humility is not something that can be switched on for political convenience. It is a way of life.

For Rt. Hon. Ime Bassey Okon, service begins long before leadership.

THE LOUDEST APPLAUSE IS EARNED IN SILENCE

By Edikan David

There is an African proverb that says a good tree is known by the shade it provides, not by the noise of its leaves.

Public service follows much the same principle. Speeches may inspire for a moment, campaign promises may capture attention, but it is sustained service that ultimately earns the confidence of the people.

That truth is reflected in a simple but powerful scene. There is no grand stage, no microphone, no elaborate ceremony. A representative stands among his constituents, and the applause comes naturally. It is a moment that says more than words ever could.

For Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ime Bassey Okon, Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, such moments are best understood not as celebrations of personality but as acknowledgements of service rendered.

Among those applauding may be parents whose children benefited from educational grants that have supported more than 640 students with over ₦35.6 million in assistance. There may be patients or family members whose hope was restored through free medical outreaches that recorded 1,157 medical interventions and facilitated 105 surgeries. Others may have witnessed new classroom blocks, solar-powered boreholes, streetlights and civic centres taking shape in their communities.

Every clap represents a story. Every story reflects an intervention. Every intervention reminds us that representation is meaningful only when it improves lives.

Democracy places a unique responsibility on elected officials. They are expected not only to debate laws in the National Assembly but also to remain connected to the people whose voices they represent. It is a responsibility that extends beyond legislative chambers into schools, hospitals, villages, churches, youth meetings and family gatherings.

That is where representation becomes visible.

Over the years, Rt. Hon. Ime Okon's legislative responsibilities have been complemented by educational support, healthcare interventions, employment facilitation, humanitarian assistance and community development projects. His legislative contributions, including bills, motions and petitions, have also sought to bring national attention to issues affecting his constituents, demonstrating that representation is measured not only by projects on the ground but also by advocacy within the nation's parliament.

Perhaps that is why the photograph tells a compelling story. It captures neither triumph nor spectacle. Instead, it portrays something quieter and, arguably, more enduring: a relationship between a representative and the people he serves.

Applause, after all, is fleeting. It lasts only a few seconds.

The road that shortens a commuter's journey lasts for years. The classroom that welcomes children each morning shapes generations. A hospital intervention can preserve a life. An educational grant can alter the course of a family's future. Employment can restore dignity, while access to clean water can transform an entire community.

These are the achievements that continue speaking long after the applause has faded.

Public trust is not built in a single gathering. It is earned gradually through consistency, accessibility and measurable results. When citizens recognise that commitment, appreciation often finds expression in the simplest of gestures.

In the end, the loudest applause is rarely heard inside an event. It is found in communities where people can point to tangible improvements and say, with quiet confidence, that their representation has made a difference.

That is the applause that cannot be rehearsed. It can only be earned.

KNOWING IME OKON

Knowing a person goes beyond moments of convenience. There is always something that consistently stands out to define a person's character and attitude, even in moments of pressure.

Even when that character appears to falter under overwhelming circumstances, its authenticity has already been proven over time. Such moments of pressure do not define the totality of a person's character.

This is why many people become known for certain qualities over time, with their value systems formed, observed, and confirmed beyond doubt.

Rt. Hon. Ime Okon, the Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, has consistently demonstrated a character that has shaped a value system tested and trusted over time.

When it comes to:

Education,

Healthcare,

Welfare, and

Sound legislation,

all of which are people-centred, Ime Okon has a unique compass.

From the outset, Okon served the people of Ibiono Ibom as Transition Chairman, and during that period, he restored hope to many. A man who had lost his livelihood was given a new reason to hope. He has always moved with his five loaves of bread and two fish, knowing how to make them reach the multitude.

He may not be a man driven by flamboyance, but he is a contented soul who believes that true legacy lies in the lives touched and positively impacted. This explains why, for over two decades, his home has remained within the ambience of the local community and among the very people he loves and represents.

Like calm waters that run deep, he knows what to do, who to reach, when to act, and how to extend his philanthropic tentacles.

"Eyen ufok ifiok," a wise child who served kings and wise men, carefully keeping notes of their secret knowledge, should never be found wanting on matters that require the compass of wisdom.

This is a test he has passed many times. He does not enjoy joining unwise narratives and is often a man of few words on matters where integrity should speak.

Another test passed!

Caller: "Do you know that your boss, Rt. Hon. Ime Okon, has so many friends?"

Writer: "I am aware!"

Caller: "I have not reached out to him for a long time, especially since his resumption at the National Assembly."

Writer: "Oh, really? Why so?"

Caller: "Those people need to breathe too because, if you see the list of demands on their table sometimes, you will sheath your own sword of demands and sympathise with them because they are human too."

Writer: "Thank you for understanding that, my friend. But what are friends for? You can still reach out to your parliamentary friend. I believe he will be glad to hear from you."

A few days later...

Caller: "I just want to update you... ooo."

Writer: "Okay! What happened?"

Caller: "I made an unscheduled call to your boss and also sent him a chat. I was surprised! This man has not changed. He answered my call and responded to my message with a beautiful promise."

Writer: (Feeling pleasantly proud, not disappointed) "Okay, go ahead!"

Caller: "He told me to remind him about my health on a particular date. So, I just did that."

Writer: "Okay! Don't pressure him. If he said it, he will do it."

Caller: (Drops a message) "Just to inform you that your boss sent a surprising package to assist with my healthcare. I did not expect that much."

Writer: (Smiles)

Caller: "He has proven time and again that he is a good man, and position has not changed him. God bless him for us."

Writer: "Amen!"

This, and many more, are testimonials to knowing him, a man who builds more bridges than fences.
