NSE AKWA IBOM COUNCIL CELEBRATES 2023
WEEK WITH INDUCTION OF MEMBERS

Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi has declared open the 2023 Nigerian Society Engineering Week, Akwa Ibom State Branch, at NSE Secretariat, Uyo, September 27, 2023.

In her address, the Special Guest of Honour, Dr. Eyakenyi expressed delight at the event, Assuring members of the support of the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for Success of the programme, while
commending the State Executive Council for effective leadership.

"I consider it a huge honour to be invited to declare open the 2023 edition of Uyo Engineering week organized by the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch.

"I am particularly, grateful to the Chairman, Engineer Uwem Akpan and his team for raising the profile of the organisation in Akwa Ibom State".

Dr Eyakenyi described the theme of the event; "The Prospect of Indigenous Engineers in the Arise Agenda" as fitting and thoughful as it reflects the integration plan of the present State Administration for Indigenous Contractors.

Her Excellency, who was represented by the Hon Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Elder Aniefiok Nkom, stated that a study of the Arise Agenda of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, reveals a conscious attempt at capacity building, promotion of entrepreneurship, wealth creation and development of the local resources.

Stressing that it is a deliberate policy of Government to promote and patronise local contractors and service providers as this will minimise capital flight.

Her Excellency maintained that under the Arise Agenda of the administration, that the Governor has taking the patronage of indigenous contractors to another level. She mentioned the case of HENSEK Construction Company, an indigenous service provider which has become a global brand due to quality service delivery and patronage by government, amongst others.

Earlier, presenting his address of welcome, the Uyo Branch Chairman of NSE, Engr. Uwem Akpan, followed by the National President and Chairman on the occasion, Engr. Tasiu Gidari-Wudil, FNSE, represented by Prof. Rasheed Babalola, FNSE, they both expressed delight with participants and dignitaries at the event, while appreciating the State Government for partnering with the body in Engineering programmes, calling for more collaborations.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Chairman Ibom Power Company, Engr. Etido Inyang, Chairman Board of Fellows, Engr. Ifiok Umondak, amongst others.

The event which featured Technical session with paper presentations was chaired by Prof. B. R. Etuk, while Lectures were presented by the Hon Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, Engr. Dr. Bassey B. Okon, on the topic; Ibom Deep Seaport and the Emerging opportunities; the Engineers Perspective.
Engr. Prof.Folarin Alonge, FNSE, Dean Faculty of Engineering, University of Uyo, presented on; Engineering Solutions to Agricultural Revolution. While, Engr. Ekpenyong Ekpenyong, FNSE, Director of Operation, AYF Development, Nig, lectured on Effective Road and Infrastructural Maintenance.

The one week programme which witnessed a colourful procession by a college of Fellows of NSE at the event will come to conclusion on Friday, September 29, 2023, with Dinner Night and induction of other members into the prestigious profession.

MLMP Pledges Effective Collaboration with ASVAN for Training of Members

Members of the Association for Skilled and Vocational Artisans of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Council, have been assured of a robust collaboration for training and certification of members as prerequisite for employment in certain fields.

The assurance was delivered by the Hon Commissioner for Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning, Elder Aniefiok Nkom when he granted the body audience during a courtesy visit on him in the ministry.

The Labour helmsman, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Effiong Nicholas, reiterated that it is the mandate of the Ministry to evolve suitable human capacity development schemes for implementation in the labour sub-sector to provide qualified manpower for the State.

The Commissioner stressed that in line with the vision of government for youth development and jobs generation, the Ministry has embarked on various programmes including training of Two Hundred youths on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in software development, and provided them with starter packs as well as trained additional 2000 youths on maritime security and Surveillance, amongst others.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Association for Skilled/Vocational Artisans, Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Esu Effie accompanied by other members expressed delight with the Hon. Commissioner for the warm reception accorded them and identified with him on his new assignment.

Comrade Effie stated that their visit became imperative in oder to interface with the Ministry on some areas for collaboration on programmes for benefit of members and progress of the profession.

Nkom visits John Obot..extols his ingenuity in World Record Readmania.................................

The Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Mr Aniefiok Nkom has visited the marathoner, John Obot at City View Hall, Letters House, Watbridge Hotels & Suites, Uyo.

The Commissioner who was at the venue today, Saturday, September 16 sat for moments and listened to John Obot who read excitedly to the admiration of the listeners.

Mr Nkom was received by the Programme Director of the Readmania and founder of Uyo Book Club, Dr Udeme Nnanna.

Addressing newsmen after, the Commissioner, Mr Nkom extolled Mr John Obot for his ingenuity and determination to break the intellectual record of reading aloud for 145 hours.

He called on Akwa Ibom youths to develop themselves and be interested in the histories of their lands so as to connect the past with the present.

The commissioner said he decided to visit the marathoner who is from his local government area to encourage and motivate him to succeed in his endeavor, maintaining that he was proud of John Obot.

Mr Nkom who stated that he was touched by the story of the Ibibio people as read by John Obot, charged the people of the state to continue to toe the path of unity and peace which he noted remain binding force for peaceful coexistence in any society.

He made a case for such exercise to be undertaken on a regular basis to rekindle reading culture among youths, promote excellence and showcase the potentialities of Akwa Ibom youths.

John Obot at the time of the visit by the Honorable Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Mr Aniefiok Nkom had reached more than 98 hours and was pushing forward for 145 hours.

He is determined to set a new world record for longest time reading aloud.

Programme Director of the Readmania and founder of Uyo Book Club, Dr Udeme Nnanna thanked Mr Aniefiok Nkom for identifying with intellectual tourism, saying with the visit, the commissioner has encouraged the marathoner and the entire team.

Dr Nnana said the reading aloud world record breaking initiative by John Obot, an indigene of Ikot Ekpene local government area is an attempt by an individual to put his name in the world record, promote and reawaken the culture of reading.

NKOM BAGS APPOINTMENT AS EMINENT CITIZEN OF AKWA IBOM STATE

The Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Planning, Hon Aniefiok Nkom has been appointed Eminent Citizen of Akwa Ibom State.

The appointment was made by members of the Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly, (AKECA) led by the International President of the body, Mkpisong Ememobong Essien,(MNIPR) the father of the Hon Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Akwa Ibom State, Barr Ini Ememobong, accompanied by other executive members of the group, who decorated him with their symbolic dressing sash.

The Commissioner expressed delight to identify with members of the Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly, stressing it was a great privilege to host the body, he made the remarks during a courtesy visit on him by members of the group in his office.

The Commissioner advocated the need for government and the society to revive and inculcate the tradition, value of loving and caring for the Old and the Elderly in our society.

Speaking on behalf of the Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly, the International President, Mkpisong Ememobong Essien, MNIPR, a trained Psychologist, and author of many books, who will be marking his 82nd birthday, on August 23, 2023, stated that the initiation of the group became imperative following his vast experience abroad on how government and the society give priority and respect to welfare of their old people.

Mkpisong Ememobong Essien, who stated that membership of the body are people from 60 years, decried the lackluster treatment accorded this set of people in our society.

The members who were full of life and vigour, retired but not tired, sang their anthem amongst other songs, danced and marched excitedly around the hall.

The body expressed gratitude to the Hon Commissioner, Elder Nkom for giving their visit a priority, praying that God grant him the requisite wisdom to succeed in his new assignment.

Present in the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Effiong C.
