God forbid!! That's exactly what I also said when the HR of a top multinational in Nigeria said the same words to me and a group of other young graduates.
I always thought getting a job will be a stroll in the park since I graduated with a good result ( First class upper to precise, hehe). I started loosing confidence in myself when I failed over 20 different job aptitude test. I had written over 20 different job test without a further invitation for an interview. Name them; dragnet, GMAT, kenexa, workforce and CAT, I wrote them all!
But something happened!
I went from failing 20 job tests to changing 3 high paying jobs in 2 months. Wow right.. I will tell you what happened.
My encounter with the top HR changed my perception completely about job search. He made two salient points that day. One of the things he said that I will never forget is, " PRIOR PREPARATION PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE" You don't prepare for a job nights before the test, you prepare for it months and years ahead. Luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation.
That was it! I went from KNOW-IT-ALL to LEARN-IT-ALL. I spent over N20,000 buying job test questions and devouring them. I literally ATE them all. I was prepared BUT.. something else needed to be done...
Then came the second piece of advice from the top HR again. According to him, another thing that stops most job seekers from getting their dream job is a POORLY WRITTEN CV. Most of the CVs submitted by Nigerians don't pass the 30 seconds CV test. In fact, 10 seconds is enough for a recruiter to toss your CV in the thrash can.
From there I went on to prepare a standard CV that was irresistible to any recruiter!
With these two arsenals of job destruction, I was ready to attack any multinational head on.. With this, my last job test failure became the last I ever had. I went from being a sore loser to being a most wanted. I went from high paying job to another.. It was truly from glory to glory!!
This might sound like a fairy tale but I've watched over 20 persons follow the same pattern and get good jobs too. If you follow the process, getting the result is 100% guaranteed!
