OKOBO LG STRENGTHENS PARTICIPATORY GOVERNANCE WITH 2026 BUDGET CONSULTATION

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, on Monday, November 24, 2025 hosted a one-day Stakeholders’ Citizens Engagement Forum at the Okobo Council Secretariat, Okopedi, as part of the 2026 budget preparation process.

A detailed review of the 2025 budget (January–June) was presented by the Director of Budget, highlighting prudent financial management and steady improvements in revenue performance.

The interactive session provided a platform for stakeholders to make meaningful contributions across critical sectors such as infrastructure, youth development, welfare, healthcare, security, and economic expansion. Community members also nominated priority projects for consideration in the 2026 fiscal year.

The interactive session brought together key stakeholders from the eleven political wards including political leaders, youth representatives, women groups, and clerics who delivered goodwill messages and commended the chairman’s inclusive, transparent, and participatory governance approach.

The engagement reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to community-driven development, accountability, and the incorporation of citizens’ priorities into the forthcoming fiscal plan.

In line with the Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria Cap 90 Section 49 (As Amended), as well as the Akwa Ibom State Local Government Administration Law 2017 (As Amended), the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt Hon Engr George Henshaw, has sworn in newly appointed Supervisors and Special Advisers.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the council secretariat Okopedi on Friday, February 7, 2025, following the successful screening and confirmation of the the appointees by the 8th Okobo Local Government Legislative Council.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, the council boss described the appointment of the Supervisors and Special Advisers as a call to service. He expressed his gratitude to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, for his unwavering support and love.

Engr Henshaw acknowledged the people of Okobo for their goodwill and warm reception since taking office, pledging to work tirelessly for the local government's progress and development. The Chairman urged the appointees to make meaningful contributions to the administration's growth, highlighting that their selections were based on competence.

He administered the oath of office to the appointees, emphasizing their responsibility to uphold his administration's core policy of inclusion, and charged them to demonstrate unwavering commitment to this principle, which is the cornerstone of his administration's vision in line with the ARISE Agenda of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno.

Engr Henshaw noted that the appointees were chosen from the eleven Wards of the Local Government Area to be agents and ambassadors of the Development Philosophy of the State Government. He emphasized that their appointment was a conscious action by the government to utilize available human resources to drive the development of Okobo.

The Chairman said, "We are gathered here today to perform a major assignment in the life of the Local Government: the swearing in of Supervisors and Special Advisers, whose appointments are done in line with the Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria Cap 90 Section 45.

"As you are aware, you were appointed from the eleven Wards of the Local Government Area to be agents and ambassadors of the Development Philosophy of the State Government: the ARISE Agenda. So, your coming on board now is not an accident, but a conscious action by government to use the available human resources to drive the vehicle of development of Okobo.

"As partners in progress, you are expected to cooperate and work with me as a team determined to change the face of the local government area during the life of this administration."

In their separate goodwill messages at the ceremony, dignitaries such as the former member representing Oron Federal Constituency in the National Assembly and former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Barrister Peter Linus Umoh; the PDP chapter chairman, Pastor Asuquo Nduonyi, and immediate past Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Hon. Dr Attah Sylvester, praised the Chairman for the quality and competence of the appointees. They expressed confidence that the new team would work tirelessly to drive development and growth in Okobo Local Government Area.

A total of seven Supervisors and four Special Advisers were sworn in. The list of supervisors includes Ukpong Effiong Edet, Nkereruwem Uweh, Nse Edet Oluhu, Esther Effiong Solomon, Ukeh Ukeh Umoh, Isaac Christopher Okon, and Pastor Mrs. Enomfon Joseph Ekpenyong. The Special Advisers are Raphael Edet, Blessing Sunday Etim, Victor Eneyo Bassey, and Veronica Joe Mark.

Responding on behalf of the appointees, Mr. Ukpong Effiong Edet expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Chairman for considering them worthy of their appointments. He pledged that the appointees would discharge their duties with integrity, transparency, and accountability, upholding the principles of good governance and public service.

The swearing-in ceremony was witnessed by notable figures, including the First Lady of Okobo and wife to the Executive Chairman, Mrs. Nelly Henshaw; the Vice Chairman of Okobo, Hon. (Mrs) Veronica Clement, the Council Secretary, Pastor Etim Ibok , and the Leader of the Legislature, Rt. Hon. Essien Ntekim in company of all the Councillors in the area, the HOLGS, Barr Emem Nnseowo; the Chapter Chairman of PDP, Pastor Asuquo Nduonyi, former council chairman, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ubuo Effiong Ubuo; immediate past Vice Chairman, Rt. Hon. Hon Deacon Asuquo Koffi and a host of other political bigwigs from Okobo.

OKOBO 8TH LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY COMPLETES SCREENING

The 8th Legislative Assembly of Okobo local government area led Rt. Hon. Essien Eyo Ntekim has completed the screening and confirmation nominees for Supervisor and Special Advisers into Okobo executive council as sent by the Executive Chairman.
The Screening which began at about 11.30am was thoroughly carried out allowing for drilling and examination of the nominees as profiled.

Motion for confirmation of the nominees was moved by Hon. Nkereuwem Sunday (Akai/Mbokpu/Udung Ward) and seconded by Hon. Emmanuel Okon Johnson (Eweme 2)
Rt. Hon Ntekim expressed satisfaction with the qualities of nominees whose according to him came with rich credentials and beautiful track record of private and public service. He implored to bring their experiences to bear for the growth of Okobo.
According to him, "let everyone come to serve with courage, selflessness and integrity integrity, you must remain loyal to the executive chairman to enable achieve the arise agenda of the executive governor, Pastor Umo Eno.
He seized the opportunity to thank the executive chairman Rt. Hon. Engr George Henshaw for focused leadership and dedication to duty.

He also commended the chairman for his careful selection of a good team to pilot the affairs of Okobo.
Hon.Essien promised to mobilise and rally members of the legislature to support him in all his effort to to bring development to Okobo people .

Motion for adjournment was moved by Hon. Mandu Ekpenyong Esuk (Ekeya) and supported by Hon. Emem Okon Ekpenyong (Ube 1).

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, has emphasized the importance of agriculture in rural development.

The Chairman made the call during a courtesy visit by village youth presidents from Eweme Development Area, who came to congratulate him on his election and subsequent swearing-in as the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Council, the first from Eweme extraction.

Engr. Henshaw noted that agriculture is the bedrock of the economy and a sure way of combating hunger and poverty. He urged the youths to take advantage of the availability of lands in their communities and invest in agriculture. He explained that agriculture has the potential to provide employment opportunities, improve food security, and boost economic development in the area.

The Council Chairman emphasized that his administration is committed to supporting agricultural development in the area. He disclosed plans to empower farmers and support small and medium scale enterprises in the agricultural sector, adding that the Council will provide training, inputs, and equipment to farmers to enhance their productivity and improve their livelihoods.

Engr. Henshaw also encouraged the youths to form cooperatives to access loans and grants from the government. He explained that this will enable them to expand their agricultural businesses and boost productivity. The Chairman noted that the Council will provide support and guidance to the cooperatives to ensure their success.

In a related development, Engr. Henshaw also announced plans to establish a palm fruits nursery center and provide training for artisans in different fields. He explained that these initiatives are designed to provide alternative sources of income for youths and promote economic development in the area.

The palm fruits nursery center, he explained, will provide training and employment opportunities for youths in the area. The center will also serve as a hub for the production and distribution of palm fruits, which will enhance the economic development of the area.

The training program for artisans, he noted, will equip youths with the skills and knowledge needed to become self-employed and contribute to the economic development of the area. The program will cover various fields, including carpentry, masonry, and tailoring.

The initiatives, he explained, are designed to provide a comprehensive approach to rural development and youth empowerment. He noted that the Council will work closely with stakeholders, including the state government, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders, to ensure the success of the initiatives.

The emphasis on agriculture is part of the Council's efforts to promote rural development and empower youths in the area. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of youths and contribute to the overall development of Okobo Local Government Area.

Earlier, the Eweme Development Area village youth presidents, led by a one time National President of Atak-Oro Community Youth Leaders Forum, Comrade Asukwo Effiong Bassey (aka Don Mike), praised Engr. Henshaw for his commitment to agricultural development. They pledged their support for his administration and promised to work together to promote agricultural development in Okobo Local Government Area.

Comrade Bassey, while speaking on behalf of Eweme Development Area Youths, expressed their gratitude to Engr. Henshaw for his vision and leadership. He promised that the youths will work tirelessly to support the Council Chairman's developmental plans and ensure that they are implemented successfully.

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of portrait to the Executive Chairman by the Youth leaders from Eweme Development Area.

The courtesy visit was attended by the Youth President of Udung Amkpe, Ulap Okon Abiakpan; Youth President of Eweme, Sunday Sunday Tom; Youth President of Udung Affiang, Godwin Okon; Youth President of Udung UMO, Sunday Anthony; Youth President of Udung Ukpong, Edem Okon John; Youth President of Youth President of Akai Ndyo, Etim Okon Ukpong; Youth President of Oyoku Assang Ink Edet Bassey and the Youth President of Afaha Akai, Sunday Sunday Timothy. Others included the Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Hon. Ben Oyombio, and other top officials of the Council.

The visit marked a significant milestone in the Council's efforts to engage with youths and promote agricultural development in Okobo Local Government Area.

ENGR. GEORGE HENSHAW INSPECTS SITE FOR PROPOSED ULTRAMODERN JAMB COMPUTER BASED TEST (CBT) CENTRE IN OKOBO

In a move aimed at boosting educational infrastructure in Okobo Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, yesterday conducted an inspection of the proposed site for an ultramodern JAMB Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre in Okopedi, Okobo LGA.

The proposed CBT centre, according to the Chairman, is expected to meet the stringent requirements set by JAMB, including having a minimum of 250 functional desktop computers or laptops with 10% backup systems, individual cubicles for each system, and a robust computer server with a capacity to carry 250 systems concurrently.

During the inspection, Chairman Henshaw directed the Director for Works in Okobo through the representative from the Department of Works in the Council to promptly survey the land and develop a design for the project.

The chairman's decision to embark on the inspection was driven by the inclusion of the CBT center in the 2025 appropriation bill, which has been passed by the Okobo Local Government Legislative Council. This move demonstrates the chairman's commitment to expediting the project's implementation.

The ultramodern CBT centre in Okobo will provide a conducive environment for students to take their JAMB exams, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to succeed.

Once completed, the CBT centre in Okobo LGA will not only provide a modern testing facility for students but also contribute to the overall development of the area. This project is a testament to Engr. Henshaw's commitment to improving the lives of the people of Okobo LGA and Akwa Ibom State.

The Executive Chairman was accompanied by a delegation of top officials, including senior management staff, government representatives, and notable figures such as Elder (Hon) Ben Oyombio, Chief of Staff; Hon. Isaac Anyin, Director General of the George Henshaw Chairmanship campaign Organization; and Rt. Hon. Deacon Asuquo Koffi, former Vice Chairman of Okobo. Additionally, other dignitaries present included Ulap Joseph Bassey, former President of Essu Nlap Oro; Mr. Festus Bassey, PDP House of Assembly aspirant; and aides to the Executive Chairman.

The Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw, on Thursday December 26, 2024 attended the 60th anniversary celebration of the Okobo Development Union, emphasizing the importance of unity and love.

Addressing the gathering, Engr. Henshaw, who was ably represented at the event by the Secretary of Council, Pastor Etim Ibok commended the visionaries who founded the Okobo Development Union 60 years ago, acknowledging their tireless efforts in promoting the development and unity of Okobo. He also paid tribute to all those who have worked tirelessly over the years to build a better Okobo for all.

Drawing inspiration from Governor Umo Eno's agenda for peace, Engr. Henshaw urged the union to promote unity and cooperation among all groups, ensuring everyone works together towards a common goal.

The council boss highlighted the council's achievements in resolving disputes, particularly the boundary dispute between Amammong and Okopedi communities. However, he noted that the boundary dispute between Ekeya and Amammong is still ongoing, urging all parties to remain calm and await the peace committee's final recommendations.

The Executive Chairman also stressed the council's commitment to improving infrastructure, citing the ongoing rehabilitation work at the Atabong Beach Market, funded by the World Bank. Furthermore, the council has declared every last Saturday of every month as Environmental Sanitation Day across the eleven political wards in Okobo.

Engr. Henshaw pledged the continued support and partnership of the Okobo Local Government Council to the Okobo Development Union, recognizing the partnership as crucial to the development and progress of the local government area. He emphasized the importance of unity and togetherness within the local government area, particularly among the two groups, Mbawa and Atak-Oro.

Okobo LGA Declares December 28th Sanitation Day

The Okobo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has announced a general sanitation exercise, scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, from 7:00 am to 10:00 am. During this period, there will be restrictions on movement within the local government area.

Residents of Okobo Local Government Area are expected to participate in the exercise by cleaning up their immediate surroundings. The focus of the exercise will be on the general cleanup of the environment, nearby bushes, gutters, and other areas.

This exercise according to the Head of Environmental Health Services in the local, Benson Arit Effiong, is in line with the Executive Chairman, Rt. Hon. Engr. George Henshaw's vision of promoting a clean and healthy environment for all residents.

To ensure compliance, security agencies have been notified to arrest and prosecute accordingly anyone found moving around or engaging in any activity that contravene the sanitation exercise. Residents are therefore advised to cooperate fully with the authorities and participate actively in the exercise.
