Moonbeam
Episode 21
The policemen readied their weapons as they all took their positions behind the cars which served as their frontline. Dr. Anita and the Chief had both come up with a plan which they had already begun to execute.
Dr. Anita, Dr. Martha, the Drozoids and the Chief had gotten into an iron digger truck which they were going to use to quickly bulldoze their way through the area in between them and Kayode and launch a surprise attack.
Spencer and Dr. Paul stayed behind in the same stall the Chief of police was staying when they had initially arrived. Everyone had radio earpieces on in order to ensure smooth communication, although some of them were not working properly as a result of bad maintenance, those were given to the policemen with lesser ranks.
Spencer’s duty was to get a portable speaker, using a drone to the building where Kayode was. The drone had hidden cameras on it so Kayode and his goons would think it was only a speaker carrying drone. They would use that as surveillance. He had a small pocket phone that would display those images.
Dr. Paul frowned as he watched Spencer set up the drone. He had a megaphone in hand, and his own duty was to try and engage Kayode in a conversation in order to distract him from suspecting the others. He wasn’t happy because he felt Dr. Anita had purposely told him to stay behind and do that because she didn’t want him in on the action.
“New guy,” he started as he turned to Spencer.
Spencer who was in a crouched position as he tuned the drone looked up at him.
“I’m beginning to dislike Dr. Anita, I don’t think she is in the right position to lead,” he said.
Spencer shook his head and continued setting up the drone. “I’d watch what I say if I were you,” he said. He wouldn’t stand anyone talking bad about his girlfriend.
“I know you two might be going out and all, but, that woman’s bad news, I mean, I don’t think she’s who she claims to be,” Dr. Paul continued, he was still in shock of how Dr. Anita had pinned him to the ground and rendered him powerless.
Spencer remained silent, choosing to ignore Dr. Paul, but the words he was saying registered in his mind as a new feeling of suspicion began to pave way into his thoughts. He straightened himself up and used the remote control to make the drone fly.
“How could she pin me to the ground forcefully? I mean, I should have been able to break free from her grip? Something is definitely up,” Dr. Paul said as he folded his hands, the megaphone tucked beneath his arm.
“Please, let’s just focus on the situation on ground and not be….. unprofessional,” Spencer said as he started controlling the drone to the building where Kayode was, although his mind was asking that same question.
Dr. Paul frowned. “Fine then! I will find out myself,” he said angrily as he watched the drone fly past him. Dr. Anita had given specific instructions that he was supposed to start talking immediately the drone was set up and headed for the building, so Kayode would be aware of the presence of the Drone and so he would not become agitated and do something hurtful to his hostages.
“Mr. Kayode, it’s me, Dr. Paul, I just want to talk with you, that’s all, don’t do anything yet, let’s negotiate,” Dr. Paul started as the drone got closer to the building.
A window opened and someone peered out. It wasn’t Kayode, but one of his underlings.
“Oga Kayode says you better not try any secret operation or anything stupid if not he will kill one of these people here,” the man shouted. The drone was nearby already, so they could hear what he was saying.
Dr. Paul nodded. “Yes, I know that, we are not doing anything stupid, we just want to talk,” he said.
The man looked inside as if talking to someone before peering out again. “Oga Kayode said he has a list of things he want, and for every one thing you fulfil, he will release one person,” the man said.
Spencer and Dr. Paul both looked at each other.
“Okay, but how many people do you have there?” he asked.
“Twelve people,” the man said.
Dr. Paul shook his head sadly. This was what he was trying to avoid.
“He’s bluffing, heat signatures are picking up only eight people, four hostiles and four hostages,” Dr. Anita’s voice came in through the radio earpieces.
Spencer nodded and tried to control the drone into the building in order to spy on them.
Another window opened quickly and Kayode peered out. “That drone doesn’t come any closer or else I will kill them all,” he shouted. His face was brutally bruised and he had only one eye left, as his other eye had been gouged out and he had tiny deep holes all over his head.
Spencer, Dr. Paul and the policemen with them all gasped at this.
“You can go back now Dele,” Kayode said to the other man who had been speaking for him before. Dele closed the window in his side.
“Kayode, what happened to you?” Dr. Paul asked.
Kayode frowned angrily, “You know what, I will release all these people here, I don’t mind, I didn’t want to do this, the only thing I want is a face to face conversation with Senator Adeleyi Benson, my father who dumped me in that sick asylum, arrange for that, or I kill all the people here,” he shouted.
Spencer flinched. What a sad story that was.
“We are coming back, I think we should give him what he wants,” Dr. Anita said as she ordered the man driving the digger truck to turn back. Although they were directly under the building, the man didn’t hesitate to turn back.
Dr. Paul raised the megaphone to his mouth. “Alright Kayode, we are arranging for that this very minute, a helicopter will be called for you now, but you have to give your word to turn yourself back in after talking with your father,” he said.
Kayode nodded. “Sure, I promise,” he said and closed the windows.
In no time, an helicopter, with two policemen in it, landed in front of the building and Kayode went in, he ordered his three underlings to hand over the hostages to the policemen.
Spencer and Dr. Paul, who was now relieved that his family was not among, took the cell maintenance crew back to Ikorodu while Dr. Anita and Dr. Martha stayed behind with the other policemen to tend to the market place which was in great disarray.
An hour later, As Dr. Paul, Spencer and the maintenance crew walked into the hospital, a news flash popped up on the television which was in the reception. Senator Adeleyi Benson and his son, Kayode were dead. The policemen with them were brutally injured on the head which would result I them having a permanent memory loss. And the culprit was none other than Willow.
Specer and Dr. Paul froze. What in the world had just happened?!
