Gov. Aliyu distributes N75m start-up capital to 500 persons in 4 frontline LGAs

Gov. Ahmed Aliyu on Tuesday distributed financial assistance of N150,000 each to 500 beneficiaries in four frontline local governments in the state.

The visibly elated beneficiaries were drawn from: Sabon Birni, Illela, Kware and Gwadabawa LGAs.

Under the largesse, Gov. Aliyu also flagged off the distribution of assorted farm inputs with a view to further bolstering food production in the state.

This gesture is aimed at guaranteeing food security and boosting the socioeconomic development of Sokoto State.

Presenting the cash assistance to the beneficiaries, Gov. Aliyu said the gesture was aimed at ensuring that communities in the frontline local government areas are fully empowered to be self dependent.

He said that the choice of the frontline local government areas was in consideration of the activities of bandits which had crippled their economic activities, thereby worsening the insecurity in the areas.

"It is our ardent belief that this support, would help greatly in our job creation strategy, reduce idleness, restiveness and as well assist in our quest to secure our frontline local government areas.

"Available statistics have shown that many of our rural dwellers ventured into the obnoxious informants' syndrome because of the peanuts they receive from the bandits each time a ransom is paid.

"This goes to glaringly prove the popular adage that an idle mind is the devil's workshop," he averred.

The distribution, he added, was an extension of the myriad of intervention programmes his administration had introduced in order to fight poverty, reduce youth restiveness, idleness and create wealth among the people of the state.

Gov. Aliyu maintained that his administration had disbursed billions of Naira in providing financial support to the needy, the vulnerable as well as women and youths through the NG-Cares and SOSMEDA, all in an attempt to make them economically stable.

"We therefore decided to embark on this programme to make our rural communities more economically stable, especially those displaced or crippled by the activities of bandits and other forms of criminality in the state,"the Governor said.

He added that the second component of the livelihood support was the distribution of farm inputs to 300 beneficiaries from Illela local government.

They benefited with improved seeds of onion, carrots, maize, r,ice, marsha pesticides and insecticides, fertilizer, sprayers as well as thrashers.

This, according to Gov Aliyu is addition to the various forms of agricultural support his administration had given to the masses.

They included free fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides, improved seedlings, and tiller machines, all in an attempt to make the agricultural sector very attractive.

"We have distributed hundreds of grinding, tailoring and knitting machines, as well as supported our women on soap, pomade and perfume making, all with a view to making them gainfully employed,"Gov. Aliyu added.

Also speaking at the occasion, the representative of the Sultan of Sokoto and the Magajn Rafin Sokoto, Lirwanu Bello, commended the state government for the programme which is aimed at further reducing unemployment and poverty among the people.

In his goodwill message, the representative of UNDP, Nuraddeen Bashar Saleh ,called on the beneficiaries to judiciously utilize the cash and tools given to them to boost their living condition.

He praised Gov. Aliyu for the two programmes and many others his administration is undertaking in order to bring meaningful development to the state, thereby creating job opportunities.

During the event, dignitaries presented cash assistance and farm implements to the beneficiaries ,with a call on them to utilize them well for the benefit of their families and the society at large.

Gov. Aliyu approves commencement of payment of N70,000 new minimum wage on Monday.

Gov. Ahmed Aliyu has approved the commencement of the payment of the N70,000 new national minimum wage to the state workers by tomorrow, Monday .

The payment of the new minimum wage will cover the state civil servants, local governments and LGEA staff across the state.

The payment of the new national minimum wage, which is in compliance with the new national minimum wage as approved by the federal government is also in fulfillment of the promise made by the Governor to that effect.

Gov. Aliyu, therefore, urged the civil servants in the state to reciprocate the invaluable gesture by being alive to their responsibilities.

"With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage,we expect a renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality and above all, seriousness from our civil servants, "he added .

The Governor also vowed to sustain the prompt payment of salaries from the 19th to the 22nd of every month, saying that his administration will continue to remain workers'-friendly.

It could be recalled that prior to the coming of the present administration in the state, workers were not sure of when to get their salaries, as salaries were paid after 50 days as against the usual 25-30 days.

With the coming of the Ahmed Aliyu-led administration, workers in the state now receive their salaries between the 19th and 22nd of every month, while the backlog of unpaid gratuity of retirees is being defrayed by the present administration.

The state government has set aside N500 million monthly to pay the backlog of unpaid gratuity, while an additional N300 million has also been set aside monthly to pay those that retired from 2023 to date.

The idea , according to government, is to ensure that by the time the present administration completes its tenure, no civil servant would be owed any gratuity by the state government.

Gov. Ahmed Aliyu has assured his administration's support to the newly upgraded Sokoto Office of the Nigeria Institute of Leather Science and Technology to carry out its mandates effectively.

He stated this while receiving its Director- General, Dr Awwal Mustafa Imam who visited him.

The Governor commended the foresight by the Director-General to upgrade the Sokoto office of the Institute to a regional office.

"The activities of this Institute are in line with my administration's 9- point Smart Innovative Agenda to reduce unemployment and create jobs opportunities for our people

"Upgrading the Sokoto office to a regional office is the right thing to do considering the fact that Sokoto is the home of leather.

"Even the popular Moroccan leather originated from Sokoto as it was made from our popular Sokoto red goats," he added.

The Governor assured the Director- General of his administration's determination to support the newly created Sokoto regional centre to function effectively

He appealed for more job vacancies to Sokoto State indigenes in the new regional office.

Gov. Aiyu appealed, '"We look forward to a stronger collaboration with NLIST for the good of our people."

Earlier, Dr Awwal Mustafa Imam said, the Institute decided to upgrade its Sokoto office in consideration of the strategic position Sokoto occupies in the country.

Imam said, "We have inspected the facility and directed the movement of heavy equipment from Zaria to Sokoto

"We have mobilized the contractors to return to the site for the construction of affluent water treatment plant and for the renovation of Tannery so that the center can compete with the headquarters and other centers."
