Zonal Controller Trains Officers and Men of Zone J on Performance Management System (PMS)

The Zonal Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Zone J, Sokoto, CF M. I. Umar, on Wednesday, 28th January, 2026, delivered a comprehensive lecture on the Performance Management System (PMS) to Officers and Men of the Zone as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism, accountability, and service delivery within the Service.

The training session focused on deepening participants’ understanding of the Performance Management System as a strategic tool designed to enhance individual and organizational effectiveness across the Federal Fire Service.

In his address, the Zonal Controller emphasized that PMS is not merely an appraisal exercise, but a continuous and structured process that aligns individual duties and responsibilities with the overall mandate and objectives of the Service.

CF M. I. Umar explained that the Performance Management System is built on key pillars including goal setting, performance planning, continuous monitoring, performance appraisal, feedback, and capacity development. He stressed that clear performance targets, when properly defined and communicated, help officers understand expectations and improve efficiency in the discharge of their duties.

The Zonal Controller further highlighted the importance of discipline, punctuality, teamwork, and adherence to standard operating procedures as critical performance indicators under the PMS framework. According to him, effective performance management promotes transparency, fairness, and merit-based recognition, while also identifying areas where training and improvement are required.

Participants were also educated on the roles and responsibilities of both supervisors and subordinates in ensuring the success of the PMS. Supervisors were charged with the responsibility of providing objective assessments, timely feedback, and mentorship, while officers and men were encouraged to take ownership of their performance, embrace self-development, and demonstrate commitment to service excellence.

The lecture underscored the relevance of PMS to career progression, organizational growth, and improved emergency response outcomes. CF M. I. Umar urged all personnel to fully embrace the system as a means of building a more responsive, professional, and result-oriented Federal Fire Service.

The session was interactive, allowing participants to ask questions and seek clarification on performance evaluation processes and expectations. The training concluded with a call for collective responsibility in sustaining high performance standards across Zone J.

The Federal Fire Service, Zone J, Sokoto, remains committed to continuous capacity building and the promotion of best practices aimed at improving service delivery and public safety.
