Across Ethiopia, young women from the Addis Ababa University chapter are working to create opportunities for students who may never have had access to STEM education, mentorship, or technology exposure.

Founded in 2024 and led by Abegail Chanyalew Wolde, the chapter is committed to empowering young girls and underserved students through mentorship, practical learning, leadership development, and community outreach.

Through STEM awareness sessions, interactive workshops, and mentorship programs, they are helping students build confidence, curiosity, and belief in their potential.

But beyond the workshops and outreach programs, their mission is simple:

✨ Helping girls see themselves as future innovators, leaders, and problem-solvers.

This is the impact of community-driven STEM education across Africa. 💙💛

This Children’s Day, we call on the world to remember the children whose greatest dream is simply to be safe, in the midst of insurgency, war, displacement, and crisis.

To have access to education.
To imagine a future filled with possibility.
To grow up in peace.

Because peace is more than the absence of war, it is the presence of safety, dignity, and hope for every child. And protecting that future is a responsibility shared by all of us.

Is your teaching career limited to the four walls of your classroom?

At WAAW Foundation, we believe that for a teacher to inspire the next generation of African innovators, they must first be empowered to grow their own horizons. The traditional classroom is just the starting point, not the finish line.

We are excited to announce our upcoming webinar: “Beyond the Classroom: Leveraging Opportunities for Teachers’ Professional Growth.”

Joining us is the brilliant Soji Megbowon, a WAAW-trained STEM educator, award-winning innovator, and Co-Founder of Community Innovation Hub.

He is living proof of what happens when an educator embraces leadership, social entrepreneurship, and global opportunities.

In this session, we are diving deep into:

Leadership pathways and professional learning communities.

Scholarships and global fellowships for educators.

Digital income opportunities and career advancement.

What comes after the certificate?

At our April Monthly Fellows Outreach, fellows across the WAAW Foundation community joined an insightful session on “Beyond the Certificate.”

The speaker , shared practical advice on what students and recent graduates should be doing beyond academics to prepare for life after university, from building relevant skills and gaining real-world experience to being intentional about personal and professional growth.

Because the truth is, a certificate is important, but it’s what you build around it that shapes your future.

Our fellows walked away with valuable insights on how to start preparing early, make strategic decisions, and position themselves for opportunities after graduation.

Missed the session? ICYMI, we’ll be dropping the YouTube recording later this week so you can catch all the insights.

🎥 Don’t miss it the link will be shared soon!

Five rejections!
That’s how many times Aghogho Okpara was denied admission into medical school. For many people, that would have been the end of the dream.

But instead of letting rejection define her, Aghogho chose to share her story online, and it resonated with more than 400,000 people who had faced similar barriers.

Through that experience, she realized something powerful: sometimes the challenge isn’t ability, it’s access.

So she founded Achieve with Aghogho, a social impact initiative supporting students from underserved backgrounds around the world. In just its first year, the organization reached 5,000+ young people across 45+ countries, and even hosted Ireland’s first student empowerment conference.

Today, Aghogho has been recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe Social Impact list.

Her story is a reminder of what happens when a young woman is given the chance to rise.

At WAAW Foundation, we believe that when girls are given access to education, mentorship, and opportunity, they don’t just transform their own futures, they go on to empower countless others.

Today we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, a reminder that the future of technology must include girls.

Across Africa and around the world, many girls still face barriers to accessing opportunities in technology. But when we open the door to digital education, innovation, and mentorship, we unlock incredible potential.

At WAAW Foundation, we believe that when girls gain access to technology, they gain the power to create, innovate, and lead.

The future of tech is brighter when girls are part of it.

✨ Tag a girl who belongs in tech.

Meet Ruth Naibei, a WAAW Alumna and current Observability Engineer at M-PESA Africa.

Ruth spends her days solving architectural puzzles and managing systems across borders. Her secret weapon? The "Radical Ownership" and continuous learning mindset she developed as a WAAW Scholar.

"WAAW played a significant role in shaping my success," Ruth says. "It gave me the exposure and the network to take on challenges with confidence."

In Q1 alone, we saw an 83% increase in STEM interest among girls through our outreach. Ruth is what happens when that interest is backed by long-term support.

Don’t just watch the waves; help us create them.
