Day 2 of the Symposium on Malaria Modelling and Public Health Analytics took an exciting turn with the presence of the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani. He was accompanied by Mrs. Olusola Gbenga Igotun, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, and Dr. Ibrahim Abayomi, Director of Health, Ministry of Health and Human Services.
In his address, he began by expressing his appreciation to the Director of ICAMMDA, Prof. E. A. Bakare, for his leadership in driving research and innovation in malaria modelling. He also extended his gratitude to Dr. Folu Ekundare (State Malaria Program Manager) and the entire organizing committee for putting together such a crucial and impactful event.
He emphasized the need for in-depth training in malaria modelling, stressing that it should go beyond just theoretical discussions. He pointed out that public health professionals need to be well-equipped with practical knowledge on how to apply these models effectively in real-world disease control efforts.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of having dedicated individuals who would commit to this process, ensuring that the knowledge gained is not only retained but also applied to solve real health challenges. He encouraged participants to produce research papers on mathematical modelling for malaria, which could serve as valuable contributions to the field and help policymakers make informed, data-driven decisions
His words served as both motivation and a call to action, reinforcing the need for a strong link between research, policy, and implementation in the fight against malaria. His visit underscored the significance of the symposium and the crucial role of mathematical modelling in shaping effective malaria control strategies.
