NBTI Constitutes Technical Working Group to Drive Innovation Scaling and Technology Commercialisation.
The National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) has constituted a Technical Working Group (TWG) to strengthen coordination, accelerate innovation scaling and drive the commercialisation of technology outcomes emerging from research institutions, universities and the private sector.
The inauguration meeting brought together Directors and staff of NBTI, development partners, civil society organisations, media representatives and other key stakeholders to establish a coordinated framework for transitioning promising research outputs, innovations and prototypes from laboratories into market-ready products capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NBTI, Dr. Kazeem Kolawole Raji, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to bridging the persistent gap between research, innovation and the marketplace.
Dr. Raji noted that despite significant investments in research and development, many promising innovations and prototypes remain at the laboratory or prototype stage due to limited access to mentorship, technical support, investment, market linkages and strategic partnerships.
He stressed the need for a deliberate and coordinated approach to ensure that viable research outcomes are not only developed but also transformed into commercially sustainable products and enterprises.
The Technical Working Group will focus on partnership coordination, technology incubation, innovation scaling, commercialisation pathways, ecosystem linkages and national development. It will facilitate stronger collaboration among research institutions, universities, innovators, investors, industry players, development partners and other relevant stakeholders, creating practical pathways for promising technologies to access markets, funding, technical expertise and strategic partnerships.
Dr. Raji further underscored the relevance of the initiative to the Federal Government’s Nigerian First Policy, which prioritises domestic production, local value creation and the development of homegrown solutions for Nigerian and African markets.
He emphasised that NBTI is strategically positioned to support this vision through its technology incubation ecosystem, nationwide network of Technology Incubation Centres and growing partnerships across the innovation ecosystem.
According to him, the Agency will continue to leverage these platforms to nurture technology-driven enterprises, promote local innovation, support entrepreneurs and accelerate the deployment of indigenous technologies capable of creating jobs, strengthening local industries and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
The constitution of the Technical Working Group marks a significant step in NBTI’s ongoing efforts to reposition research and innovation outcomes as commercially viable solutions.
Through stronger ecosystem linkages, coordinated interventions and targeted support, NBTI aims to unlock the value of research investments, empower innovators and entrepreneurs, facilitate technology transfer and accelerate the transition of promising ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace.
The initiative reinforces NBTI’s commitment to building a robust innovation and commercialisation ecosystem in which Nigerian technologies can move beyond prototypes to become scalable enterprises and impactful solutions for national and continental development.
