TESCOM BOSS CHARGES UNIONS TO CHAMPION PROFESSIONALISM
The Chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Apostle ‘Biodun Sanyaolu, has called on relevant teaching unions to encourage their members to complete their registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), as part of efforts to professionalize the teaching Job.
Apostle Sanyaolu, made the call in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while playing host to the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogun State wing, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), as well as the Ogun Central Distinguished Educators.
Describing teaching as a noble and age-long profession, the TESCOM Chairman, said it must be standardised, recognised and accorded its rightful place in the scheme of things.
He disclosed that the Commission had already liaised with the management of TRCN on the issue of certification and licensing, adding that necessary modalities had been worked out to resolve the lingering bottlenecks.
“The teaching profession must be professionalised like accounting, law, engineering and medicine. We cannot achieve quality education if our teachers are not properly registered and licensed,” he said.
Apostle Sanyaolu, who described the NUT as the umbrella body for teachers, assured that TESCOM would strengthen its partnership with all
teaching and non-teaching unions, particularly the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), to achieve common goals in the education sector.
He further urged the unions to continue to prioritise the capacity development of their members to enhance productivity and improve learning outcomes in Public Secondary Schools across the State.
In their separate responses, the State Chairman NUT, Comrade Oladipupo Sawaikanu; the State President, NASU, Comrade Olumide Oduneye; and the Chairperson, Planning Committee, Ogun Central Distinguished Educators, Mrs. Omotayo Akintunde, commended TESCOM for its transformation drive in the education sector.
The trio expressed gratitude to the Chairman, Board Members and Management of the Commission for the warm reception and pledged the continued support of their unions to the Commission’s mandate.
