A few days ago, our teachers and students visited Little Saints Orphanage as part of our ongoing project powered by the Ashoka Africa Changemaker initiative.

After receiving a ₦250,000 grant for our project, we committed to strengthening one of the 4 key future-ready skills in our learners, Empathy.

This visit offered our students a powerful opportunity to learn by experiencing, connect with others, and understand the world beyond their immediate environment.

Our students took turns giving speeches, sharing kind words, and showing genuine care. It was a touching moment of growth, reflection, and compassion.

Note: This video was edited by our students, a proud testament to their creativity and ownership.

Last week, Dr Ogunsesan B. O. our Principal hosted an insightful in-house seminar on mental health in marriages for our dear staff.
The goal was simple yet powerful: to ensure that challenges at home do not affect the quality of teaching and learning delivered in the classroom.

Here are some highlights from the session.

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), announces that the 2025 Universal Basic Education (UBE) Placement Test via Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS) for Primary Six pupils will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. prompt.
This initiative underscores the State Government's commitment to providing quality and accessible Education.
According to an official statement signed by Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Placement Test is specifically for Primary Six pupils in public and approved private primary schools in Lagos State.
The Test is a crucial step in the transition process for primary six pupils to Government Junior Secondary Schools across the State.
Mrs. Dokunmu-Adegbite stated that school representatives are expected to accompany their pupils to the designated examination centers across the State, while emphasizing the importance of cooperation between all stakeholders to ensure that all eligible pupils participate successfully in the assessment.
"The Ministry remains committed to the 'Leave No Child Behind' principle, the Placement Test, using Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS) and Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets, as these provide a fair and objective evaluation of pupils' cognitive abilities", she enthused.

The Permanent Secretary urged candidates to approach the examination with seriousness, confidence, and thorough preparation, emphasizing its significance in their academic journey.
The Ministry expressed gratitude to parents, guardians, and school administrators for the unalloyed support in ensuring a seamless and effective learning experience for all pupils.

Ashoka Young Changemakers Festival!

Our teachers who participated in the Ashoka CTEACH programme took our students on a journey which started last year after their induction. Subsequently, our students were engaged in several activities, brainstorming and sharing of ideas. Then, we came up with the "Trash to Treasure Initiative" an idea that focuses on advocating and supporting The Lagos State Government efforts in reducing waste. Specifically, nylon waste and empowering students with educational materials from proceeds we get from selling plastics and other recyclables. We then proceeded to pitching our idea and on the 26th of March, we won 1st place from our District at the preliminaries.

On June 5th, during the Ashoka Young Changemakers Festival the winners of the Pitch-a-thon were announced and our "Trash to Treasure Initiative" proudly came second in Lagos State.

From tackling nylon pollution to inspiring student-led action, our changemaking squad at Ijaiye Ojokoro Junior High School is just getting started.
The time for change is now and we will keep producing changemakers!

Today, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Lagos State command visited our school with the theme "War Against Drug Abuse" to sensitize our students on the categories of drugs and effects of drug abuse.
The sensitization program won the attention of our students as they were already exposed to some of these drugs. However, the speaker reiterated that knowledge is power and she shared with them the power to help them become great students without the abuse of drugs.

The abuse of drugs is predominantly increasing. However, we would continue to nurture and promote students who would shun the abuse of drugs and strive to be better in the society.
