League of Nigerian Democrats
Vision and Mission Statement
League of Nigerian Democrats are seasoned advocates of a nascent democracy. It waters its true nature; liberalness, social equity, fairness in representation and distribution of its welfare packages to affect all states in Nigeria. Top on the list of its objectives is to encourage and promote good governance, while frowning at undemocratic

democracy through all law-bound possible means at our disposal, with valour and loyalty to the league. The win-or-die leviathan attitude of our political parties cm patriots is of course disheartening, destabilizing and a disgrace to democratic splendor and aesthetics. Also, our political elite’s noxious sacred-cow syndrome of not allowing our women participate fully in politics is democratically porous and dogmatic, and it contravenes the franchise right to vote and be voted for, notwithstanding the sex. It also contravenes articles 1 and 2 of the Universal Declaration of human rights, thus:
Article 1
All human beings are born free and equal
in dignity and rights. They are endowed
with reason and conscience and should
act towards one another in the spirit
of brotherhood
Article 2
Everyone is entitled to all the rights
and freedoms set forth in this
Declaration, without distinction of any
kind, such as race, colour, sex
Stating therefore, that women be given more political roles is but stating the obvious. And as Sojourner Truth rightly says, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, together Women ought to be able to turn it right side up again”. A man at best could be an individual but a woman is always a nation and experience has proven that just as breast is natural to a suckling baby, so is the leadership of women to nation-building. Taking into cognizance this truism, it becomes plausible to say that it is high time Nigeria produced females in sensitive positions. In any case, notwithstanding the dangers in our polity today where men of guts would just vanish for simply standing for the truth. Again, noting that democratically minded groups that should have been unbiased in their dispositions have ended up regrettably irredeemable in the tent of a particular politician/political party is a disgrace to democratic aesthetics and splendor is noting a spade a spade. This trend is sad and from the past experience of democracy in Nigeria, there should be mental repositioning from sentimental to credibility politics. As a result, the league admits that the cog in the wheel of democratic progress in the state and Nigeria at large is not ignorance but inaction. To therefore stand tall and speak to a fault, from an objective point of view, we have refused to soil ourselves with any individual or group to avoid favouritism-got-so-cheap may be by money. Membership cuts across tested, energetic, Benue-loving democrats, unionists, politicians, political scientists, industrialists, philanthropists and academicians etc. within Nigeria and in diaspora. To conclude, in a democratic setting like Benue, where democracy cries for greater expression, the need has only become eminent for the electorate to have a voice and a feel of good governance and not just what is obtainable in the air, papers or what have you which most times is a sharp deviation from realism, qualified by George Orwell’s adjective in his 1984 as double-speak. And politics itself become constructively competitive to enhance more growth, development, and improvement in the political, cultural and socio-economic well-being of her citizens.

Emefiele Challenges EFCC’s Role in Fraud Trial

Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has asked an FCT High Court to foreclose the prosecution in his ongoing fraud trial. He argues that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has no legal standing in the case, as the charges were filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Emefiele faces a 20-count charge including:

- Criminal breach of trust
- Forgery
- Conspiracy
- Obtaining money by false pretence

His lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, criticized the absence of the AGF’s legal team in court and questioned why the EFCC was requesting an adjournment. Justice Hamza Muazu granted one final opportunity for the prosecution to appear, warning that failure to do so could lead to the case being foreclosed.

The hearing is now adjourned to October 22 and 23.

OBASANJO'S PRISON NOTES

Three things I did while in prison — Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo narrated his prisons experience and declared that he did three things while he was in Yola and Kirikiri prisons serving a jail term for a phantom coup charges by the late military dictator, Sani Abacha.

He narrated, “There’s a difference between joy and happiness. In prison, I had joy but it will be madness for me to say that when I was in prison I was happy. How can you be in prison and say you are happy? But I was having the joy of God with me, not for one day was I sad. And I am grateful to God for the experience that I had in the prison.

“I will mention three things that God made me to do when I was in Yola Prison.

One, God made me to build a church. It’s very unusual, I asked the authorities for land, they were reluctant, but eventually they gave me land and immediately, we started getting donations. It was started before I left Yola. Wherever you are, you can still be useful to the work of God.

“Secondly, there was a parcel of land, which was not being used for anything, so, I told the prison authorities that I wanted to farm. They were reluctant but eventually they granted me the permission to farm and I grew enough beans to feed all the inmates and the warders. Don’t remain idle, get something doing.”

The third thing he did, Obasanjo said, was at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos where he took over as the prison pastor. He said he took over as prison pastor because the prison authorities banned preachers from coming in after some white garments preachers who came to preach had helped some inmates to escape by dressing them in white garments.

He said, “They made sure we did not receive anybody from outside to come and preach to us or fellowship with us. So, I took over as the prison pastor. And there was a boy whom they had introduced to me, his nickname was Baba Ali. Baba Ali was the head of the armed robbers in the North. And if you were an armed robber and you came to the prison, you must first of all go and pay homage to Baba Ali. If you were going out, you must go to Baba Ali and ask him for instruction on what you had to do next.

“So, I called Baba Ali one day and said, ‘You are not coming to fellowship; I want you to be coming to the fellowship.’ He said, ‘Baba, don’t worry me; don’t worry me at all because God can never forgive me. I have kpaii so many people in my life; I have drunk the blood of so many people; I have eaten the flesh of so many people and God will never forgive me, so, don’t waste your time about me.’

“I left Baba Ali on that occasion, and I waited for some time before I went back and said, ‘Baba Ali, you know all you said that you are a murderer, whether you kpaii only one person or a thousand people, you are a murderer; but have you forgotten that Moses was a murderer but God used him to bring the people of Israel out of Egypt? David was a murderer but God called him a man after my heart.

By the time I was leaving the prison, I told Baba Ali that if he was able to make it and he would like to go to bible school, I would send him to Bible school. Baba Ali came out of prison two years after me. By the time he came out I had become the President of Nigeria. It took him two years to get through to me, when he got to me, I reminded him of our agreement and he said he was ready to go to the bible school. So, I sent him to the seminary. Baba Ali spent two years in the seminary, today Baba Ali is the pastor of a Baptist Church. What is more? Baba Ali’s junior brother took after him and has also become a pastor.”

LESSONS TO LEARN
1. No position that a man should find himself in life where he should not be useful to God.
2. Wherever you are, you can still be useful to the work of God. God can use you anywhere, anytime.
3. Don’t remain idle, get something doing.”
4. God can change anybody
5. There is opportunity in every disappoinment.
6. Wisdom can save your life.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has criticized the Rivers State House of Assembly for initiating a probe into financial activities during his six-month emergency rule.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, resolved to investigate spending from the consolidated revenue fund, including contract awards- Ibas, speaking through his media adviser Hector Igbikiowubu, argued that the Assembly lacks the authority to probe him since they didn’t appoint him.

He emphasized that his appointment came from President Bola Tinubu, and his tenure was supervised by the National Assembly. Ibas dismissed the probe as a “fool’s errand,” implying it challenges the legitimacy of both the presidency and the national legislature.
