Federal Fire Service Celebrates International Firefighters’ Day

The Federal Fire Service Zone D/Niger Command joined the global community today, May 4, 2026, to commemorate International Firefighters’ Day.

This special day is set aside to honour the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of firefighters across the world who routinely risk their lives to protect lives and property. It also serves as a solemn reminder to remember our fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

International Firefighters’ Day, observed annually on the 4th of May, coincides with the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. The day promotes fire safety awareness, highlights the challenges faced by fire services, and encourages greater public support for firefighters.

The Federal Fire Service Zone D/Niger Command extends profound appreciation to all serving and retired personnel for their unwavering commitment to duty. We equally honour the families of our fallen officers for their strength and support.

The Federal Fire Service Zone D remains committed to its mandate of fire prevention, mitigation, and emergency response. Our officers continue to serve with professionalism and courage in the face of evolving challenges, including urban fires, industrial incidents, and other emergencies.

As part of activities marking the day, the following were organised:

1. Observation of a minute of silence and the sounding of sirens for 30 seconds in remembrance of departed Firefighters.
2. Fire safety sensitisation conducted in schools by FOWA Niger State Chapter.
3. A fire drill.

The Federal Fire Service Zone D urges all Nigerlites to prioritise fire safety in their homes, offices, and markets. Simple actions such as proper electrical wiring, safe use of cooking gas, and regular drills can prevent avoidable fire disasters.

We salute the heroes in uniform who run towards danger when others run away.
