The Wife of the Governor of Niger State, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has extended her grassroots economic empowerment initiative to Edati Local Government Area with a ₦100 million Mega Empowerment Programme, designed to support residents across the ten wards of the Local Government.

In a Press Statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Wife of the Governor, Hadiza Abdullahi Maikano, the initiative was described as part of The First Lady's sustained commitment to taking meaningful economic opportunities directly to the grassroots and improving the livelihoods of residents across Niger State.

Under the programme, ₦10 million was allocated to each of the ten wards, with individual beneficiaries receiving ₦100,000 each to support existing businesses, establish new ventures and strengthen their sources of livelihood.

The benefiting wards are Enagi, Guzzan, Rokota, Etsu Tasha, Sakpe, Gbangban, Fazhi, Gonagi, Gazhe 1 and Gazhe 2 Wards.

According to the statement, the intervention goes beyond financial assistance, as it is intended to encourage beneficiaries to become economically productive, self-reliant and capable of creating sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds, improve their businesses, embrace creativity and explore new opportunities that would enable them to grow beyond the immediate support.

She stressed that the success of the empowerment programme would ultimately depend on how responsibly beneficiaries utilised the opportunity provided to them.

The programme attracted government officials, community leaders, stakeholders and beneficiaries from across Edati Local Government Area.
The Chairman of Edati Local Government Council welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation to the First Lady for bringing the empowerment programme to the grassroots.

Also speaking, former Commissioner for Transport, Hajiya Ramatu Yaradua, described the intervention as an inclusive programme designed to benefit the people irrespective of political affiliation.

She noted that the primary objective was to improve the living conditions of residents by providing them with the means to strengthen their economic activities.

The event also featured Gwape and other cultural displays, adding colour to the occasion and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Edati Local Government Area.

The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the First Lady for the gesture, describing the financial support as timely and capable of making a positive difference in their businesses and livelihoods.

The Edati empowerment programme is part of Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago’s broader grassroots empowerment vision, with plans to extend similar interventions to other Local Government Areas, particularly across Zone A, in order to reach more residents and create wider economic opportunities.

The statement reaffirmed the First Lady’s commitment to an inclusive empowerment agenda that places the people at the centre of development and seeks to build stronger families, resilient communities and a more prosperous Niger State.

The event took place on Saturday 12th September, 2026 at Enagi Primary School, Edati Local Government Area.

Hajiya Hannatu Salihu who spoke for the coalition explained that the proposed initiative is designed to empower 100 women in each of the 88 wards, with beneficiaries receiving business support alongside entrepreneurship training, mentorship and monitoring to promote sustainability and lasting impact.

According to her, the programme has the potential to directly and indirectly impact 88,000 women, strengthen household incomes, reduce poverty and stimulate grassroots economic growth across Zone β€˜A’. She called for the partnership and support of the Niger State Government towards the successful implementation of the initiative, stressing that empowering women at the grassroots would have a direct and positive impact on families and communities.

Hajiya Fatima Bago further urged members of the women’s group to return to their respective Local Government Areas and wards and actively participate in building a strong structure that would facilitate the effective implementation, coordination and monitoring of the programme.

The Wife of the Governor also disclosed that she would soon launch an empowerment programme in Edati Local Government Area, targeting 1,000 women and youths, which she said would subsequently be replicated across the eight Local Government Areas of Zone β€˜A’.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Hajiya Hannatu, described the Zone β€˜A’ women as a united delegation of 100 women drawn from the eight Local Government Areas and 88 wards of the Zone, who had come to identify with and appreciate the achievements of the Farmer Governor.

She expressed the group’s appreciation to Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for what she described as his purposeful leadership and commitment to the development of Niger State, particularly his confidence in women and their capacity to contribute meaningfully to governance and development.

Hajiya Hannatu specifically commended the Governor for appointing women to strategic positions across government, describing the appointment of female Vice Chairpersons across all 25 Local Government Areas of the State as a historic demonstration of his commitment to women’s inclusion and participation in governance.

The women also expressed their support for the continuity of the administration and endorsed Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for a second term in office, noting that continuity would further consolidate the developmental gains recorded under his leadership.

The solidarity visit provided an opportunity for the women to reaffirm their unity, loyalty and commitment to the administration’s development agenda, while exploring practical ways of strengthening women’s economic participation and empowerment at the grassroots.
