The Wife of the Governor of Niger State and State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has reaffirmed her commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, sanitation and climate action among young people through the planned launch of Climate Change, Sanitation and Hygiene Clubs and Societies across schools in Niger State.
In a Press Statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Wife of the Governor, Hadiza Abdullahi Maikano, this was disclosed during a briefing on the upcoming launch of the initiative by the Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The programme is being implemented under the auspices of the Renewed Hope Initiative of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, and is being championed in Niger State by Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago.
The delegation ws led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Abubakar Sadeeq Musa, alongside key officials of the Ministry, including directors and technical experts responsible for climate change, environmental health, pollution control, sanitation and environmental sustainability programmes.
During the briefing, the team presented a comprehensive framework for the establishment and revitalisation of environmental clubs and societies in schools, aimed at fostering environmental consciousness, climate resilience and healthy sanitation practices among students.
The proposed initiative will focus on practical and educational activities such as tree planting, waste segregation, composting, environmental sanitation campaigns, hygiene education, climate change awareness, decarbonisation advocacy and sustainable agricultural practices. Students will also be encouraged to participate in community-based sanitation programmes designed to promote behavioural change and environmental responsibility.
The Ministry explained that the initiative is a step-down of a federal programme and is expected to commence in selected schools before being expanded to other institutions across the state. The programme is designed to empower students as environmental ambassadors who will carry positive environmental practices beyond the school environment and into their communities.
Speaking during the meeting,Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago commended the Ministry for its proactive approach and dedication to promoting environmental sustainability through youth engagement.She described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of Niger State, noting that educating young people on climate action, environmental protection and sanitation will contribute significantly to building healthier communities and a more sustainable environment.
The First Lady emphasised the need for sustainability, and effective stakeholder engagement to ensure the success of the programme. She also encouraged collaboration with traditional institutions, community leaders, relevant federal agencies and the media to deepen awareness and strengthen public participation.
She further stressed the importance of ensuring that the initiative reaches all parts of the state over time, while maintaining a structured implementation process.The meeting concluded with plans for the Ministry to finalise key implementation details, including the proposed launch date, venue, participating schools, budget and stakeholder engagement strategy ahead of the official inauguration of the clubs and societies.
The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by the administration of Farmer Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago to promote environmental sustainability, climate resilience and community development across Niger State.
