PRESS STATEMENT

ESCHEW BICKERING AND ESTABLISH A POLICTICAL STRUCTURE, IYC TELL GOVERNOR THEODORE ORJI.

The Igbo Youth Congress (IYC) a prominent south-east socio-political advocacy group has urged the Igbo political class to urgently resolve to erect a formidable political structure ahead of 2015 general elections for the purpose of climbing to political significance and press forward the course of economic development of the region.

The group which rose from an emergency congress in Lagos at the weekend to deal with apparent marginalisation of the region in the country’s political structure and under-development arising from the poor leadership recommended that a sound political preparation has become imperative to secure key political positions in the coming elections.

IYC National President Comrade Bright Ezeocha who addressed the media after the forum questioned the truthfulness of some celebrated Igbo leaders who he alleged have failed to reposition the south east political scenery that will smooth the progress of mainstreaming efforts with key regional political blocs for the purpose of re-launching the region into political limelight.

Ezeocha said the people of the region have become challenged with political prostitution of some notable Igbo politicians and the disintegration in the value chain a major factor that has robbed them of their once envied throttlehold in the Nigeria structure.

According to him the recent visit of Abia state governor, Theodore Orji and key political office holders including serving National Assembly members from the state to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) apparently to invoke his influence against the rumored return to the party by erstwhile governor of the state Orji Uzor Kalu underscores the height of political disunity among Ndigbo.

According to him, the rationale of the visit was objectionable and had deepened the political chasm among major Igbo politicians who appear to be self serving and capable of costing the region their aspiration to produce the next president of the country.

‘we are dismayed by the action of team led by the Abia state governor ostensibly put impediment on the way toward the perceived return of Orji Uzor Kalu to the party because at this point we are in reality disturbed with the poor state of infrastructure in Abia state which should be a source of worry to the governor rather than embarking on political betrayal’ Ezeocha despondently noted.

He said the governor had previously blamed Orji Uzor Kalu for distracting his administration, today after more then three years of parting way with (Kalu’s) development still eluded the state as there is nothing on ground to show in terms of progress.

The IYC president challenged the state governor to exert energy toward development of physical infrastructure to pave way for development adding that indigenes of the state are industrious but only needed a clement environment to invest and develop their businesses.

He said ‘Igbo’s generally are inventive and development oriented but our leaders have not offered them the opportunity to spread out their creativity and enhance development. We are calling on them to provide ingenious leadership and come together to establish a structure for future elections.

Ezeocha further pointed out that the insistence on Igbo presidency in 2015 may not happen except determined efforts are made to bring together Ndigbo both in Diaspora through a structure that will give them a voice.
He warned of possible political split in the state if the current mind-set of the governor is not chequered and feared that the issue will further disrupt development.
