Earlier, the WHO Benue State Coordinator, Dr. Mohammed Abdulkarim Abdullahi, said the donation was intended to strengthen Benue State's preparedness and response to priority disease outbreaks, including cholera, Lassa fever and other epidemic-prone diseases. He explained that the commodities would support healthcare delivery in vulnerable communities, particularly Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and host communities, where overcrowding and poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions increase the risk of communicable diseases. According to him, the intervention will enhance emergency preparedness, improve case management, strengthen infection prevention and control measures, and reinforce the resilience of the state's health system.
Present at the ceremony were the Permanent Secretary, Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. Cephas Hough; the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Pharmacist Regina Chi-Chi Agir; the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Solomon Wombo; and other senior officials of the Ministry.

In line with the unwavering commitment of the Benue State Government to strengthen the healthcare delivery system and ensure quality medical services for all citizens, the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche Ejeh Paul, on Tuesday led a high-powered delegation on a comprehensive assessment visit to the temporary site of General Hospital, Otukpo.
The visit underscores the determination of the administration of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, to reposition the health sector through strategic investments in infrastructure, improved working conditions for health professionals, and enhanced access to quality healthcare across the state.
The Health Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Cephas Hough; the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Solomon Wombo; the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mathew Onoja; alongside other senior management staff of the Ministry and the Hospitals Management Board.
The delegation was warmly received by the Principal Medical Officer in Charge of General Hospital, Otukpo, Dr. James Diatah, and members of staff of the hospital.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Diatah expressed appreciation to the Commissioner and his team for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of the government's genuine concern for the welfare of both health workers and patients. He briefed the delegation on the operational realities confronting the hospital at its temporary location, highlighting the limitations of the existing facility and appealing to the state government to expedite the relocation of the hospital to a permanent and more suitable site.

Following the briefing, Dr. Diatah conducted the Commissioner and his entourage on an extensive inspection tour of the temporary facility, where the team assessed the hospital's infrastructure, service delivery points, equipment, staff working conditions, and other operational challenges requiring urgent government attention.
Addressing members of staff after the inspection, the Honourable Commissioner, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, commended the resilience, dedication, and professionalism of the hospital management and staff despite the challenges under which they currently operate.

Consequently, the state-owned General Hospital has since operated from a temporary facility.

BENUE AT 50: HEALTH SECTOR RECORDS STEADY PROGRESS UNDER ONGOING REFORMS

As Benue State marks its 50th anniversary, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, has highlighted key developments and ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.

Speaking during a media engagement to commemorate Benue @50, Dr. Ogwuche noted that the state government has continued to invest in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, primary healthcare services, and public health programmes designed to improve access to quality healthcare for residents.

According to the Commissioner, recent efforts have focused on expanding primary healthcare services, improving maternal, newborn and child health programmes, strengthening routine immunisation, and increasing the availability of essential medicines and skilled health personnel, particularly in underserved communities.

He also highlighted interventions implemented through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), WASH programmes, and partnerships with national and international development organisations, which have supported initiatives in sanitation, nutrition, disease prevention, and community health education.

Hyacinth Iormem Alia , to quality healthcare delivery and social protection for vulnerable citizens, the Benue State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Ogwuche Ejeh Paul, has paid a special visit to the mother of a rare set of quadruplets currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. Cephas Hough; the Director of Public Health, Dr. Joshua Agbadu; and Dr. Amos Mvandega of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). The delegation was received by the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr. Stephen Hwande, alongside members of the hospital management team and healthcare professionals overseeing the care of the mother and her four babies.

Prior to meeting the family, the Commissioner received a comprehensive briefing from the hospital management and attending clinicians on the medical condition of both the mother and the newborns. He was informed that the mother and babies were responding positively to treatment following their successful evacuation from Ugbema in Buruku Local Government Area to BSUTH for specialized medical care.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Ogwuche described the birth of the quadruplets as a rare blessing not only to the family but also to the people of Benue State. He noted that the successful referral, evacuation, and management of the case reflect the growing capacity and responsiveness of the state's healthcare system under Governor Alia's administration.

The Commissioner conveyed the goodwill and best wishes of Governor Hyacinth Alia to the family and assured them of the government's continued support during this critical period. BENUE STATE FLAGS OFF 2026 SEASONAL MALARIA CHEMOPREVENTION CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT CHILDREN AGAINST MALARIA

In a significant step towards reducing the burden of malaria among children, the Benue State Government has officially flagged off the 2026 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) Campaign, reaffirming its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and improving public health outcomes across the state.

The flag-off ceremony was conducted by the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche, alongside key stakeholders, development partners, healthcare professionals, and community representatives.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner emphasized that malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death among children under five years of age in Nigeria. He noted that the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention campaign is a proven and effective intervention aimed at preventing malaria during peak transmission periods, particularly among children aged 3 to 59 months.

Dr. Ogwuche Ejeh Paul stated that the campaign aligns with the healthcare transformation agenda of His Excellency, Rev. Dr. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia , Executive Governor of Benue State, whose administration has continued to prioritize access to quality healthcare services, disease prevention, and improved health outcomes for all residents of the state.

"The administration of His Excellency remains committed to implementing evidence-based health interventions that save lives and improve the well-being of our people. The Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention campaign is one of such interventions that will significantly reduce malaria-related illnesses, hospital admissions, and deaths among our children," the Commissioner stated.

He explained that during the campaign, trained community drug distributors will move from house to house across eligible Local Government Areas to administer preventive malaria medications to children, ensuring that no eligible child is left behind.

The Commissioner urged parents and caregivers to fully cooperate with health workers and ensure that their children receive all recommended doses throughout the campaign cycle.

Also speaking at the event, representatives of development partners commended the Benue State Government for its sustained commitment to malaria control and elimination efforts. They reiterated their support for strengthening community-based interventions and improving access to lifesaving malaria prevention services.

The Director of Public Health and other health officials emphasized the importance of community participation, noting that the success of the campaign depends largely on public acceptance, awareness, and adherence to the treatment schedule.

The General Hospital Adikpo has been recognized with an Award of Excellence by APIN Public Health Initiatives in recognition of its exceptional performance in health data management, reporting accuracy, and record keeping.

The prestigious award was presented during APIN's 25th Anniversary Celebration, held in Abuja on June 2, 2026, where the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Ogwuche Ejeh Paul , received the award on behalf of the hospital.

In a symbolic handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Health and Human Services, Civil Service Secretariat, Makurdi, the Honourable Commissioner formally presented the award to the Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Onoja Matthew, in the presence of the Permanent Secretary, Cephas Hujeh PhD.

The award followed a rigorous assessment and validation exercise conducted by APIN, during which General Hospital Adikpo achieved an outstanding 100 percent score in data quality, record keeping, and reporting accuracy, both at the initial review stage and during subsequent verification and recheck processes. The hospital's records were adjudged to be complete, accurate, transparent, and of the highest quality standards.

Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche commended the management and staff of General Hospital Adikpo for bringing honour to Benue State through their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.

He noted that the recognition reflects the growing capacity and resilience of health institutions across the state and aligns with the healthcare transformation agenda of Rev. Dr. Fr. The Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services has held a strategic review meeting with contractors handling the ongoing revitalization of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, with a strong emphasis on project completion, facility handover timelines, and the need to sustain momentum towards strengthening healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

The meeting, which serves as a follow-up to an earlier engagement held on April 28, 2026, brought together officials of the Ministry of Health and Human Services, the Benue State Primary Health Care Board, project managers, development partners, and contractors responsible for the ex*****on of the health facility revitalization programme.

The review was convened to assess the current status of project implementation, identify challenges affecting completion, and finalize schedules for the handover of completed facilities across the state.

Speaking during the meeting, the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Ogwuche Ejeh Paul, commended contractors for the progress recorded so far and reiterated the State Government's commitment to ensuring the successful delivery of all healthcare infrastructure projects.

The Commissioner noted that the revitalization programme remains a critical component of the healthcare transformation agenda of His Excellency, Rev. Dr. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, whose administration has prioritized access to quality healthcare through the rehabilitation, upgrading, and expansion of health facilities across the state.

According to the project implementation update presented at the meeting, significant progress has been recorded since the last review session. While approximately 70 facilities were reported ready for commissioning during the previous assessment, the number has now increased to 80 completed facilities, reflecting the commitment of contractors and the government's determination to improve healthcare infrastructure throughout Benue State.

The meeting further revealed that contractors have collectively agreed to accelerate work on the remaining facilities to ensure completion and handover within the agreed timelines.

Project managers emphasized that all facilities must be handed over before the end of June 2026, noting that failure to meet the stipulated deadlines could affect access to retention funds and other contractual obligations tied to project completion.

Participants were reminded that the projects remain subject to a liability period designed to ensure quality assurance and accountability, making timely handover essential for effective monitoring and operationalization of the facilities.

The Project Manager highlighted the importance of adherence to timelines, stressing that the successful completion and transfer of the facilities would enable government and healthcare authorities to commence full utilization of the upgraded centres for improved service delivery.

Handover schedules were subsequently agreed upon, with contractors assigned specific dates ranging from June 10 to June 25, 2026, based on their respective project lots.

During discussions, some contractors identified security challenges in certain locations as factors affecting project ex*****on. However, stakeholders agreed that despite the difficulties, every effort must be made to complete outstanding works within the established timeframe.

The Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary Health Care Board emphasized that timely completion of the projects is crucial to expanding access to essential healthcare services, particularly for rural and underserved communities.

He noted that delays in project delivery directly impact service provision and the overall goal of strengthening primary healthcare systems across the state.

Participants also reviewed strategies for addressing outstanding technical and operational challenges, with a consensus that stronger collaboration, effective communication, and continuous monitoring would be required to achieve the project's objectives.
