KOGI COMMISSIONER HOSTS "NIGERIAN EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL":
DISCUSS COLLABORATION & DIVERSIFICATION OF KOGI'S EXPORT SECTOR

The State Commissioner for Commerce & Industry, Hon. Muhammed Muktar shuaibu, has commended "Nigerian Export Promotion Council" for always finding positive initiative that often aligns with State Objectives.

Hon. Shuaibu made this comment while speaking with Representatives from the Agency, who aims to strengthen collaboration, and ensure effective coordination of the State Committee on Export Promotion (SCEP).

The State Coordinator, Mr Usenide Aniekpeno, explained that "Nigerian Export Promotion Council" was established in 1976, and are responsible for promoting the development and diversification of the country’s export trade.

Aniekpeno noted that the role of all stakeholders cannot be overstated, thus all hands are on deck to help promote her natural resources, and also provide synergy when needed.

In his words - "Our mandate has always been to;

• Develop and promote the export of non-oil products.
• Provide export advisory services.
• Facilitate capacity building and market access for exporters.
• And Implement policies to boost foreign exchange earnings.

"The State Committee on Export Promotion (SCEP) was created by the NEPC, to drive the implementation of export promotion projects at the state level. And ensure that state-specific export initiatives align with national strategies.

This committee is tasked with:

• Developing a particular product with an alternative, One State One Product (OSOP).
• Identifying and developing exportable products.
• Promoting export activities.
• And facilitating local exporters' access to the international markets."

Responding, Hon. Shuaibu appreciated the role of NEPC, KOCCIMA, and other Representatives/Agencies.

"I have seen the commitment from all our related Agencies to help promote the development of the State in its entirety. The former State Coordinator has been wonderful in seeing Kogi to a higher light & I have no doubt that you will follow in her footsteps."

"As far as this Ministry is concerned, we shall work in synergy to bring the best out of everyone to the benefit of Kogites. Please don't hesitate to bring fort any innovations. I can assure you that H.E, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has big plans for the State and is resolute in accomplishing them."

Earlier, the Ag, Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Gloria Ali expressed her pleasure with the Agency's cooperation.

In line with the resolve of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo to make Kogi State an Industrial hub and Commercial nerve center of the North-Central sub-region, the Honourable Commissioner, Kogi State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mallam Muhammed Muktar shuaibu led Senior Management Officers of the Ministry to some Industrial establishment in the state.

The essence of the visits according to the Honourable Commissioner, was to assure the business community that their investment in the state is safe and to let them know that government is ever ready to play it's role diligently that will enable investors contribute to the economy of the state and the provision of jobs for the teaming youth populace.

“Industrialization remains the best way to get our teaming youth off the street and we are committed in ensuring that Kogi State to work for Kogites" the commissioner added.

Places visited include the Dangote cement company, Obajana, Kogi, Nigeria, the Jakura Mable Limited and GC Export Industrial Park, Jamata village along the Lokoja-Abuja highway.

INFLATION, KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT INTERFACE WITH TRADERS.

In an effort to curb the incessant hike in prices of commodities which has become unbearable to citizens, the Kogi State Government today held a meeting with the leadership of the Kogi State Traders Association on ways to curtail the alarming increment in various items.

While interfacing with the traders, the Honourable Commissioner, Kogi State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mallam Muhammed Muktar shuaibu appealed to the leadership of the Traders and other relevant stakeholders to caution their members on maximization of profit in order not to overburden the consumers.

He solicited for their cooperation as government is determined in addressing all the factors responsible for the high cost of basic necessities of life such as food.

The Honourable Commissioner condemned the practice where price of foodstuffs can increase to over hundred percent within a short space of time. "Naira is gaining strength against the Dollar but it is not reflecting on the price of food and commodities; this can't continue and the government has decided to interact with you to know the challenges and what can be done to bring it to a halt. That's why we are here"

"His Excellency, the Executive Governor Alhaji Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo is not happy with the alarming rate of inflation and he has mandated the Ministry to swing into action and our meeting today is part of the process". He added.

In their separate responses, the President of Igbo Traders association, Mr. Solomon Okoli commended the coming of the Honourable Commissioner and highlighted some of the factors responsible for the non-reduction of prices of commodities to include; multiple taxation, high cost of transportation and accruals on loans taken by the traders. He assured the chairman that the traders are also not comfortable with the situation and are ready to cooperate with government to address the situation.

Also speaking, Alhaji Dasebe Yakubu, the Vice Chairman of Kogi State Traders Association attributed part of the blame to the shady practices of retailers whom are always reluctant to implement reduction in prices of items whenever the producing companies do so. He called on the government to empower the association to enable them bring such retailers to book.

Responding to their submissions, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mallam Muhammed Muktar Shuaibu assured the traders that government will address all their challenges and create an enabling environment that will make their businesses to thrive.

He informed them of numerous government programmes that on the pipeline for traders in the state as part of efforts to boot business activities and promote self employment for the teaming youths in the state.
