18 Pieces of Advice Before Purchasing Books

Taken from a lecture entitled “How a Student of Knowledge Builds His Library” by Shaykh Khālid ar-Raddādī رحمه الله تعالى given at the Islamic University of Madīnah. The points were extracted by Abul-Hasan Rūqī al-‘Utaybī.

1. Know the appropriate book for you, either by acquiring the list of new books from the bookstore or by asking those who have experience before purchasing which books are beneficial and which prints are good.

2. Prepare well when purchasing books by preparing a list of books you want to purchase and a list of books you previously purchased.

3. Be keen to buy foundational books that one cannot do without, especially the books of the Righteous Predecessors and know that: No one book suffices for another.

4. Be keen to purchase books which have been verified by qualified Scholars, and also outstanding University thesis.

5. Flip through the pages of the books before buying it to make sure that it doesn’t have any blank pages, missing sections, a weak binding or other book defects.

6. If the book you want to purchase has been verified then be keen on the best verified copy. That is known by skimming the introduction, knowing the methodology of the verifier and asking other students of knowledge who have acquired this print.

7. Try and read the introduction and table of contents so you know what is in the book, this is extremely important for the one who wants to buy it.

8. Be keen to purchase the prints that the Scholars rely upon and they are the ones they refer to often.

9. Be extremely careful of publishers and printing houses which are well-known for corrupt beliefs or intellectual thievery.

10. If the book has been verified more than once by more than one person then it is preferred that it have the following qualities in order: (A.) The print that has been verified against a handwritten manuscript is preferred. (B.) The print that was given attention by verifying the Prophetic hadith is given preferred. (C.) The print which has valuable indexes is preferred. And if it gathers all three of these that is excellent.

11. Do not hesitate to buy the books you need for your studies, or you want to read them, or you fear them going out of print, or a reliable person who is well informed advises you to get them; rather rush to purchase them.

12. When you purchase a book be sure to buy the second or latest print since it will have improvements, corrections and revisions. But beware of a flashy phrase that they place on them in order to deceive the buyers: “With Additions, Revised and Verified” but who is the one who verified it? It is not known, he is not mentioned.

13. Be keen to purchase books in different subjects not just in one science.

14. Don’t buy the book until you know the terminology of the author. The introduction of the book usually uncovers that, so begin the book by reading the introduction.

15. Make sure the book is free from dirt and printing blemishes such as ripped or folded pages, or part of the book is ripped or missing.

16. Don’t be deceived by flashy titles or a cheap price. Verify the content of the book first.

17. Don’t consider the wealth you spend on purchasing beneficial books to be too much.

18. Benefit from book fairs, especially the university fairs, because they are a tremendous opportunity to purchase books and benefit from the seasons when books are on sale.

May Allah have mercy upon the Shaykh and grant him the highest level of Jannah

I was hoping to make a content on the last copies of this lovely translation....but then.... it's over and out.

Anyways, we've restocked.

Thinking of one of the best Fiqh/Hadith book translations out there, Buluugh Al-Maraam is it.

Those who have it and do read it can testify. Even as a striving student of knowledge, it has outstanding additions you might not meet in your normal Arabic print.

This is dope.

Just with 16k and you own it.

Book recommendations:

I want to recommend some books that are like MUSTs in the lives of various categories of Muslims. This is coming from a (secular) book recommendation post I responded to on Twitter. I changed the theme to religion there and I'm bringing it here now.

N.B: List will be based on MY picks from what I've heard around from scholars and of course not backed by ANY authority. Hence feel free to add or delete but this doesn't mean I can't as well disagree with you if I feel you're wrong too. Soq.

So, I'll start with the (edited) list I tweeted on Twitter. My list will mainly be in fives.

For rich Muslims who can afford them and perhaps are not (good) Arabic readers:

1. Sahiih Al-Bukhaari
2. Sahiih Muslim
3. Raheeq Makhtuum (English is The Sealed Nectar or The Pure Nectar)
4. Captured Thoughts (Sayd Al-Khaatir in Arabic)
5. Kitaab At-Tawheed
6. Riyaadh As-Sooliheen
7. Tafseer Ibn Katheer
8. English interpretation of the Qur'an (Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Muhammad Taqiyyudeen Al-Hilaali)
9. Adab Al-Mufrad
10. The Prophet's Solaah (Shaykh Albaani)

More to come in-shaa-Allaah.

Don't forget we are always your best sodaqah plug: booksellers. DM us for sodaqah ideas and let's help you achieve them for yourself (while alive) and for your deceased ones (this feeling is always sweet). For example, the Yoruba-English-Arabic dico I use is from a sodaqah I benefitted from. Hmmmm! Anytime I use, the dead gets the reward in-shaa-Allaah. So, DM us for your Duruus Luggah, Nuur Al-Bayaan, Citadel, Qur'aan (I implore you to get this for just mosques that have very few and madaaris), tiras for serious students of knowledge, English bokks etc.

**Benefits of sitting with the scholars**

A Shaykh was asked: 'Ustaadh, how can someone read Zaad Al-Ma'aad?"

He answered: you have to read it with a good book of Seerah which contains the complete history of the Prophet ﷺ and then a good and not so bulky book of Fiqh which contains all the chapters of Fiqh, not the mere Tahaarah-Solaat aspects.

I asked: Ustaadh, what about a book like Ar-Rawd Al-Murbi'? He said yes that's fine (perhaps he meant so since it's a sharh of a primer)*.

A colleague asked: what about Sharh Al-Mumti' to which I interjected saying "ha!" yet Ustaadh said it's fine too since it's comprehensive. My reason for interjecting of course was due to its voluminous nature as compared to what the Ustaadh had said. The bro asked again about Al-Fiqh Al-Muyassar and Ustaadh encouraged it too.

I for one didn't bother to ask about a Seerah book.

This took place on the 8th day of Rabii' Al-Awwaal/11th of September and I had decided to benefit others with this knowledge "scope" since. AlhamduliLlaah I have not done that. If you have the book and are interested in reading it, you can utilise this scope. BaarakaLlaahu feekum.

* Ar-Rawd Al-Murbi' is an explanation of Zaad Al-Mustaqni' which is a primer for Hanbali Fiqh. It's just a volume hence why question and my amazement with Sharh Al-Mumti' which is nth less than 80k atm and 10 volumes at the least. Below is a pic of Al-Mumti' from Sifah As-Sofwah.
