The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) is a leading recognized professional body in Nigeria dedicated to enhancing the status and practice of Corporate Governance and Public Administration. The International body was founded in Britain in 1891 and received Royal Charter in 1902. The Institute in Nigeria was established many years ago as an associate of the international body. It was granted a Charter by Act No. 19 of 1991 (formerly Decree No. 19 of 1991). The ICSAN educational and professional structure is dedicated to the task of broadening the professional horizons of tomorrow’s managers by providing programmes on a wide range of subjects that lead to a qualification which is nationally and internationally recognised. ICSAN is the only professional body authorized in Nigeria to conduct the examinations leading to the qualification of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. The Institute is a member of the Corporate Secretaries International Association (CSIA), a Geneva-registered global organization, dedicated to developing and growing the study and practice of Secretaryship to improve professional standards, the quality of governance practice and to improve organizational performance. ICSAN FAST TRACK TO MEMBERSHIP

A Brief Overview

The ICSAN Fast Track to Membership is a specially designed pathway for accomplished professionals seeking to attain the prestigious Chartered Secretary qualification through an accelerated route. The programme provides a unique opportunity for distinguished professionals with substantial experience to acquire globally recognised professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), following intensive training and successful completion of the prescribed examination.

Successful participants will be admitted into one of the world's leading professional bodies for governance practitioners.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must possess a minimum of a First Degree or its equivalent and satisfy any one of the following requirements:

a. Company Secretaries with at least 15 years' cognate experience in company secretarial practice and corporate governance.

b. Chairmen, Secretaries and Members of the Boards of Public Sector Organisations.

c. Public/Civil Servants who:
are not below the rank of Deputy Director and have served for a minimum of 10 years in senior management positions.

d. Senior Military, Police and Paramilitary Officers from the rank of Lieutenant Colonel or its equivalent in the other services.

e. Senior Lecturers in Corporate Governance, Law, Accounting, Management Sciences, Social Sciences or related disciplines.

f. Legal Practitioners and In-house Legal Advisers with at least 15 years' post-call professional experience.

g. Bankers, Accountants and holders of other relevant qualifications with a minimum of 20 years' relevant experience at senior management level.

h. Directors and Senior Management Executives with at least 15 years' management experience.

Programme Benefits
Successful applicants will enjoy substantial exemptions and following the mandatory training programme, will be required to sit only the prescribed core professional examinations before admission into membership.

On Thursday, 20th August 2026 the President/Chairman of the governing Council, of The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria, ICSAN, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, FCIS led the ICSAN delegation on a courtesy visit to The Honourable Minister of Defence,
General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), OFR, at the Federal Ministry of Defence in Abuja.

The visit formed part of ICSAN’s ongoing stakeholder engagements as the Institute marks its 60th Anniversary in 2026 under the theme: “Six Decades of Excellence: Shaping Governance, Empowering Futures.”

During the engagement, the President briefed the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) on ICSAN@60 activities and the Annual Conference and ICSAN@60 Gala Dinner and Awards taking place on 9-10 October 2026 at the Balmoral Event Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

The President further briefed the Minister on the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria (CGIN) Bill, 2026 (SB. 89) which has successfully passed Second Reading in the Senate. She noted that the Bill seeks to modernize Nigeria’s governance profession and align the country with global best practices as seen in the UK, Canada, South Africa, Malaysia, and Australia.

She also proposed strategic collaboration with the Ministry in the areas of training, governance, leadership, ethics, compliance, risk management and institutional effectiveness, stressing that strong defence institutions require sound governance and accountability frameworks.

The President appealed for support towards the completion of the Institute’s National Secretariat Project in Lagos, described as a landmark edifice for governance professionals in Nigeria.

The Ministry welcomed the visit and expressed appreciation for ICSAN’s contributions to nation-building through professional excellence in governance.

ICSAN@60 Diamond Jubilee Gala Night in Rivers State

The ICSAN Rivers State Chapter proudly hosted the ICSAN@60 Diamond Jubilee Gala Night on Thursday, 6 August 2026, as part of the Institute’s nationwide celebration of six decades of excellence, ethical leadership, and good governance.

The memorable evening brought together distinguished personalities, governance professionals, traditional rulers, and other eminent guests to celebrate ICSAN’s remarkable journey and enduring contribution to governance in Nigeria.

The President/Chairman of Council, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, FCIS, highlighted ICSAN’s six-decade legacy, the new National Secretariat project, the nationwide anniversary tour, and progress on the Bill to transition the Institute to the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria.

The Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Justice D. G. Kio, PhD emphasised the importance of accountability, ethical leadership, justice, and public trust, while His Royal Highness, Serena Dokubo-Spiff, called for greater investment in strong governance foundations.

The Governance Challenge winners received awards and all participants received consolation prizes in recognition of their participation and commitment.

It was a memorable celebration of 60 years of ICSAN’s legacy, leadership, and contribution to governance in Nigeria.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF ICSAN: A LEGACY OF GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE

On 5 August 2026, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) celebrated its 60th Anniversary in Rivers State under the theme “Advancing Transformational Leadership and Corporate Governance in the 21st Century.”

The celebration brought together distinguished leaders, governance professionals and eminent personalities, including:

1. Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi; Vice Chancellor, Rivers State University (RSU).

2. Anniversary Guest Lecturer, Prof. Tamunomiebi Miebaka, who delivered an insightful and thought-provoking address on the imperatives of transformational leadership and effective corporate governance.

3. Royal Father of the Day, HRM Barr. Uche Isaiah-Elikwu JP; Eze Apara Rebisi XII (King of Port Harcourt).

4. Special Guest of Honour, His Lordship, Hon. Justice S. C. Amadi, DSSRS, Chief Judge of Rivers State Judiciary.

ICSAN Deepens Strategic Collaboration with NAHCO

In a significant step towards deepening industry engagement and advancing good governance in the aviation sector, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), led by the President/Chairman of the Governing Council, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, FCIS, paid a courtesy visit to the management of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company PLC (NAHCO) on Friday, 14 August 2026.

The visit was facilitated by the ICSAN Logistics Sectoral Group, ably chaired by Mrs. Bunmi Adefolu, FCIS, the engagement provided an opportunity to explore areas of mutual collaboration and promote corporate governance and corporate secretarial best practices within the aviation industry.

The ICSAN delegation was warmly received by the General Manager, External Relations, Mr. Ahmed Bashir Gulmah, and the management team of NAHCO.

The President appreciated the NAHCO management for the warm reception and expressed optimism about a stronger and mutually beneficial relationship between both organisations.

ICSAN Forges Stronger Partnership with SAHCO

On Friday, 14 August 2026, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), led by the President/Chairman of the Governing Council, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah, FCIS, paid a courtesy visit to the Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) in Lagos.

The visit, facilitated by the ICSAN Logistics Sectoral Group, chaired by Mrs. Bunmi Adefolu, FCIS, provided an opportunity to deepen engagement and explore areas of strategic partnership in promoting good governance and corporate secretarial best practices in the aviation sector.

The delegation was warmly received by the Managing Director of SAHCO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, and members of her management team.

During the engagement, Mrs. Ukpanah highlighted the value of ICSAN to organisations and invited Mrs. Aboderin to the Institute’s Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for 9 and 10 October 2026 in Lagos. She also sought SAHCO’s support for the ICSAN Building Project and expressed the Institute’s interest in a mutually beneficial partnership.

The President appreciated SAHCO for the warm reception and expressed optimism that the engagement would pave the way for a strong and enduring partnership between both organisations.

In attendance was the Honorary Treasurer, Mr. Onyekachi Uko, FCIS, Chairman Publicity and Advocacy Committee of ICSAN, Mrs. Abiola Laseinde,FCIS and other members of the ICSAN Logistics Sectoral Group.
