LAWMA ACADEMY INTERNS TRANSFORM ABANDONED TYRES INTO CREATIVE FURNITURE

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has recorded another milestone in environmental innovation and waste-to-wealth advocacy as Team Zero Trace, a group of intern students at the LAWMA Academy, transformed abandoned tyres recovered from the Olusosun Landfill into a creatively designed decorative table for household use.

Speaking during the presentation of the project in his office, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin commended the ingenuity and creativity demonstrated by the interns, describing the initiative as a practical reflection of the Authority’s vision of transforming waste management into a sustainable circular economy system.

According to him, the initiative further reinforces the message that waste materials are valuable resources that can be repurposed through innovation, technical knowledge, and creative thinking.

He said: “What these young interns have achieved is highly commendable and inspiring. Transforming abandoned tyres into a beautiful decorative table clearly demonstrates that waste can become wealth when creativity meets knowledge. This is exactly the kind of innovation we seek to encourage through the LAWMA Academy.”

The handcrafted table, produced from two discarded tyres, features neatly designed storage shelves beneath, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal. The project highlights the growing potential of recycling and upcycling in converting waste materials into valuable household products while promoting sustainable environmental practices in Lagos State.

Members of Team Zero Trace include: Sadiq Quaribat Boluwatife (Class Representative), Iyiomo Micheal Oluwaseun, Ogunsami Ayomide Elizabeth, Mustapha Ololade Aisha, Adewoyin Mariam Adedoyin, Ogunfowora Bolarinwa Yewande, Hundeyin Sewanu Sunday, and Ibraheem Raheemat Tolulope.

Dr. Gbadegesin stated that the Authority remained committed to empowering young people with practical environmental and entrepreneurial skills capable of promoting sustainability while creating economic opportunities.

He added that environmental sustainability extends beyond waste evacuation to include innovation, resource recovery, recycling, and the development of practical solutions from materials often considered useless.

Speaking on behalf of the team, the Class Representative, Sadiq Quaribat Boluwatife, expressed appreciation to the management of LAWMA and coordinators of the LAWMA Academy for providing the students with the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and hands-on experience in sustainable waste management practices.

She noted that the project had expanded their understanding of environmental sustainability and inspired them to view waste materials from a different perspective.

According to her, the experience gained during the training had strengthened their passion for innovation, creativity, and environmental responsibility while motivating them to contribute meaningfully towards building a cleaner and greener Lagos.

The LAWMA boss encouraged young Nigerians to embrace recycling and environmental innovation, stressing that the circular economy offered enormous opportunities for job creation, economic growth, and cleaner communities.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to strengthening environmental education, practical learning, and waste-to-wealth initiatives through the LAWMA Academy.

LAWMA URGES WASTE REDUCTION, SORTING AS DISPOSAL SITES FACE WEATHER-INDUCED OPERATIONAL PRESSURE

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to embrace waste reduction, sorting, and responsible disposal practices as disposal facilities across Lagos State experience increased operational pressure arising from heavy rainfall and difficult terrain conditions.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that persistent rainfall and increased waste evacuation activities had placed considerable strain on disposal infrastructure, affecting truck movement, turnaround time, and operational efficiency at some landfill and disposal locations across the State.

He noted that the situation had also impacted evacuation logistics for PSP operators and sanitation personnel working under challenging weather conditions to sustain waste management operations statewide.

According to him, the Authority was actively engaging relevant stakeholders and implementing operational measures aimed at improving accessibility, stabilising disposal operations, and reducing pressure on critical waste infrastructure during the rainy season.

Dr. Gbadegesin urged residents to support ongoing interventions by reducing waste generation, properly bagging waste, and adopting waste sorting practices that encourage recycling and resource recovery.

He explained that waste sorting at source, particularly the separation of recyclable and organic waste, would significantly reduce pressure on disposal facilities while supporting the State’s broader transition towards a circular economy and sustainable waste management system.

The LAWMA boss further assured residents that the Authority remained committed to sustaining environmental sanitation across Lagos through continuous collaboration with PSP operators, operational reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and strategic interventions designed to strengthen the resilience of the waste management system.

He also commended PSP operators, drivers, sanitation workers, and operational personnel for their resilience and continued commitment to service delivery despite prevailing operational constraints.

LAWMA appealed to residents for understanding and cooperation, assuring that concerted efforts were ongoing to maintain effective waste evacuation operations and cleaner communities across the State.
