CORDELIA

A Chilly Haunt From The Past

Episode 3

Mary fidgeted and hesitated a bit as she stepped into the gate of the gambling house, she had meant to come here to say goodbye to everybody, but she is afraid of relapsing and falling back into the ditch she had crawled out from just yesterday. What if she's not strong enough to resist the urge as she soon as she sights the life sucking machines

''No'' she muttered under her breath, she is here to do one thing and one thing only,to say goodbye and after this, she won't be stepping her foot anywhere near here anymore, her kids need her to be a better person and for them, she would do anything

Her past vain fantasies has gone on for too long and she is going to put a stop to it today

She walked into the hall and headed towards a section filled with the friends and acquaintances she had made here

She touched a lady seated at the poker table on the back and the woman turned to her

''Mary hi'' the woman hooted loudly when she saw her ''what kept you, you're late today''

Mary frowned a bit and chuckled sadly when she heard the remark,it was really disturbing for her to learn that she had sunk so low and she had become such a regular here so much that her absence, even for some hours now seems so strange

''Do you wanna play poker today?'' she asked,as she gathered the game chips on the table and pulled them towards herself ''or you're sticking with cards?''

''Gina,i.......''

''Or slots'' Gina cut her short ''you might be lucky with that,i think we can all see that cards and poker are just not your thing'' she chattered on ''i'm feeling lucky about the slot machines today'' she said ''what do you think?'' she made to stand up

''Gina,i came to say goodbye'' she stated

The woman lowered herself back to her seat as Mary took the seat beside her, evading the table with her eyes, less she falls into the temptation of trying to gamble again

''What do you mean'' Gina asked,in a soft voice

''I realized that....'' she was saying when a raucous noise emerged in the hall,as a set of machines and gambling tables were brought in ''what are those?'' she asked, distracted

''The new machines'' Gina replied

''What new machines'' she asked curiously

''They announced it this morning'' she stressed ''they're adding a new gambling machine, they call it the spinning spinner or the spin o spin'' she explained ''they've not unveiled it yet''

Mary sighed and touched her forehead in dissatisfaction ''sorry i asked that,i don't need to know really'' she sighed

''Why are you being so uptight'' Gina scoffed ''hey Pauline, come listen to this'' she called another woman who was just returning from the slot section and the woman moved towards them

''I almost lost all my money at the slot'' the woman hissed as she got to them ''can you believe that?''

''No,can you believe this'' Gina said with some exaggeration ''Mary said she came here to say goodbye to us and gambling''

Pauline turned to face Mary ''really?'' she paused

Mary nodded ''yes,i'm not here to play today'' she affirmed ''i can't dwell on these life sucking games of probabilities anymore'' she said ''i came here to say goodbye'' she stressed ''forever'' she emphasized

The woman paused for a moment ''i knew there had to be something wrong when Mary failed to show up this morning'' she said ''so you're planning to leave forever'' she faced her

''Yes'' she asserted ''i'm quitting gambling''

''Well, good for you but how are you gonna pay your debts?'' she questioned

''Yeah, thats true'' Gina added ''i won three thousand off of you at cards yesterday and before that, you owed me a thousand bucks''

''You owe me six thousand bucks Mary'' Pauline said ''added to what you owe Gina, thats about ten thousand dollars'' she pressed on ''and that is just the littlest among your debts, you owe practically everybody here, how are you gonna pay''

She sighed deeply, gambling had really ruined her more than she realized ''i'll pay you all your money'' she said ''one way or the other'' she stressed ''i'll get a job and with my abilities......''

''Your abilities as a past math teacher?'' she scoffed, albeit mockingly ''believe it or not Mary, this is the best place where you can make the money in the quickest possible time''

''I'm done with gambling'' she stated firmly, reiterating her stance

A rowdy noise came from the entrance of the hall and they all turned to look

A man walked in,followed by two unruly looking men who seem to be his bodyguards

''Craig Whitaker'' Pauline said, drawing her breath ''i thought it was just a rumor that he would be coming today''

''Craig Whitaker?........'' Gina trailed off, expecting Pauline to expatiate further

Mary turned to look at the guy, she's completely unfamiliar with him,but to her,he seemed suspicious,up to no good with his aura and countenance

He walked into the gambling den and proceeded up to the gallery where the premium gamblers were

''Pauline,who's he'' Gina asked,curiously

''He's a loan shark'' she said ''and rumors are,he has a share in this place''

''No wonder'' Mary whispered under her breath, when she saw him,the warning gong in her head immediately sounded,he's truly someone to stay away from

An alarm rang in the hall as the new machines were unveiled and an announcement came from the main speaker, introducing people to the machine and how to play it

''Lets go'' Gina squealed, excitedly as she stood up and dragged Pauline with her ''lets go try them out'' she said as they rushed towards one of the machines which was now surrounded by some people in the room, eager to play

Mary cautiously followed after them, curious to see how the game is played though she had no intention of playing, she has made her decision and she's going to stand by it,for the sake of her family

She stood still as she watched the people play, but as time went on,strangely, she realized that once the dice is thrown towards the spinning surface, the place and number she had predicted in her mind as where the dice would fall,is where it always falls

The player would first press the spinner button to start moving, then throw the dice

It was a mathematical calculation going on speedily in her mind, she never really told her friends here but she was a prime and intellectual graduate in pure and applied mathematics, she was so good in it,such that the people that knew her then, always called her a mathlete

The angular and trigonometric calculations she did in her head, judging by the angle the player throws the dice from and the timing at which the dice is thrown, coupled with the fixed intensity at which the spinner moved,it was indubitable, she had figured it out

By the time the hour was over, she had become certain of it,she predicted every result correctly, though most of the people that have played lost their bets

''Let me try'' she proceeded to the table, lodging herself among the frustrated players

''How much are you betting?'' one of the casino staffs asked,he was the one assigned to monitor the table and make sure everything was in order

''Five hundred bucks'' she said, offering everything left in her purse, she was entirely sure she would be going home with much more

Though the reason she came here was to say goodbye, that was her objective here today but she just can't stick with that anymore, she can't bypass this chance

Yes,she had promised her kids that she would quit gambling but not right now,not here today, she would be doing this for them, she has debts to pay and if she wins something substantial here, she won't need to look for a job, before she can get the forms for Cordelia and support her college education

A wave of guilt and self consciousness swept over her as she surrendered the money with her,and when it was becoming overwhelming, she locked it out, she's doing this for her kids, she assured herself and faced the table

After this, she would never step her feet near here again

''I thought you were quitting'' Gina commented

''Well, this is the last one'' she said as she picked up her dice ''i choose three'' she said and pressed the spinner button, the round spinner began to move at the same constant intensity and after careful calculations and evaluations,Mary threw the dice

The spinner moved for some seconds longer and stopped, revealing the number the dice had fallen upon, and as predicted by Mary,it fell on three

''Yes'' she cheered

''Five hundred won'' the casino employee announced ''along with your bet, makes it a thousand'' he said, the game was meant to double whatever the bet money was

''Wow,how did you do that'' Pauline's eyes widened, along with everybody else's ''in your first spin?''

Mary ignored her words ''i'm betting the thousand'' she said and picked up the dice ''i pick seven'' she chuckled as she pressed the spinner button and threw her dice, continuing with her game in excited anticipation

*****************

As the girls worked in the bakery,Cordelia focused on the large bowl before her as she mixed and smoothened the dough

Her boss watched her for a while ''put some more salt in that'' he instructed ''we want to keep a healthy balance, thats why our customers keep coming for more''

''Okay'' she said and picked up the colorless container beside her and sprinkled some more salt in the bowl, before mixing it

The man watched for a moment longer before moving over to her ''scoot over, let me do it'' he said as he took her place and mixed the dough more rapidly ''we don't wanna waste time''

''Hey Simon'' one of the other girls called ''favoritism'' she pointed out ''that is so unfair, you would have yelled if it were somebody else'' she said ''Cordelia earns more than all of us here but you still help her with half of her duties'' she complained and pouted

''Not half of my job'' Cordelia retorted

''Whats the difference'' the only guy there spoke up

''Cordelia got here before any of you so.......'' Simon trailed off as he finished mixing the content of the bowl ''put that in the pan and get it in the oven'' he said to her

''Okay'' Cordelia smiled as she picked out the pan, poured the flour mixture in it and headed out of her workspace towards one of the ovens in the far distance

''Maybe you should be paying us more too'' she said ''you're being unfair''

''Okay well,if you don't like how i run my bakery, you're free to quit'' he remarked in a quickened speech as he walked around the room, inspecting everybody's work

The girl chuckled ''brute'' she murmured

''Its always Cordelia'' another girl pouted

Cordelia moved back towards her space and returned behind her baking slab ''hey you guys don't have to be so mean, you won't have to put up with me for much longer anyway'' she said ''i'll be quitting soon''

Simon turned back to her in a quick concession ''you're quitting?''

''Yes Simon'' she affirmed ''my mom said she'll pick up college forms for me'' she stressed ''i might be going off to college soon''

''Oh'' he smiled, compassionately ''so Mary's finally out of her shell'' he said as he moved closer to her slab ''how is she doing?''

''She's much better now'' she smiled, heartily

He nodded softly ''well, thats a relief'' he beamed before returning back towards the master slab in the room,he had always been a friend to Cordelia's family because he and Mary knew each other in the past, even before she got married to Colton

He had always admired her,he loved her but he never professed his love to her. When he started planning the date where he would finally confess his feelings for her,the next thing he saw was the invitation to her wedding

He was really heartbroken, but it was his fault,he failed to do the right thing at the right time.Though,it was really evident that Mary was totally immersed in her feelings for Colton

He didn't like the guy at first but then they became friendly later on.Who wouldn't get along with Colton,he was very jovial and clownish as some would say,he was really funny and full of life and zest,he was such a lovable man

He became a friend to the family and as time went on,he managed his feelings, got over it and found his own bride.Though, things later didn't work out and they had to get a divorce but they have children together, children whose custody he shares with her

Five years ago,a heart wrenching and horrible thunder struck the Jackman family and it really shook everyone of them connected to the family,Colton died under mysterious circumstances and till now,the case has not been settled, since there was no lead or clue pertaining to getting the criminal who cut his very impactful life short

After Colton's death,Mary shut everyone out, friends and family, and even her own children, but being a friend of the family, when he saw the situation of things and how hard it was for the kids with their struggles,he had offered Cordelia a job at his bakery so that in some way,she could help support her family

And now,he's actually very thankful that after five long years,Mary has recovered from the pains that had relegated and confined her in a jail of her own addiction and foible, and she has finally taken the lead in ensuring her children get a future, even though, their father is no more

''So you're leaving?'' the other guy in the room asked

''Yes'' Cordelia answered ''so even if you all hate me,can you please just be nice for the limited time i'm going to spend here with you?''

''No,we don't hate you Cordelia'' the girl answered ''we hate Simon'' she glanced at him at the far end of the room

''Yep we do'' the guy chimed

''I hate you all too'' Simon replied and they all laughed as they continued their work

***************

Mary laughed almost hysterically as she counted the money with her,it was over fifty thousand dollars, she had played the spinning spinner several times and hasn't lost even once

Everyone just watched in awe as she stacked up her money

''How did you do that?'' Pauline asked

''Can you help predict mine?''

Questions flew about her,but Mary wasn't concentrating, the thoughts of her kids clouded her mind and made her delirious with excitement. With this money, she'll sponsor Cordelia through college, this is the same amount of money Cordelia joined a dancing club for,so with this already available, she would be compelled to quit

Now that she has this money, she can pick up the forms, get her daughter into a nice college and put some money down for Camille too, just in case, because though her school records are fantastic and she's working towards a merit scholarship, there's a chance that she might not get it

She contemplated playing one more time to double the money but even though, she was sure of her ability, she did not want to risk it,besides, its already getting late and Camille would probably be done with her papers for today already. They all left the house around the same time and if the girl gets home and doesn't meet her there, she would know, she had stayed behind to gamble some more. This is something she wants to keep from her children, she had broken the promise she made to them and they should not find out

Initially she had meant to branch at Camille's school to pick her up today, but that won't be happening anymore

As she eagerly counted the money she had won,she remembered the debts she owed and removed some of the money, thankfully, everything she owed here is not more than eighteen thousand dollars, and she would pay everything before leaving today

As she drifted around in her thoughts,a man moved towards her and she looked up at him,it was the same man who arrived earlier today,Craig Whitaker

He sat down on the other side of the machine and dismissed the Casino employee who ushered everyone else away ''hello Mary'' he said

Mary was taken aback a bit,his disposition and that sinister air about him, made her very suspicious

''Hi''

''I see you're very good at this'' he said, gesturing at the machine ''so i'm here to offer you a deal'' he went straight to the point

''What kind of deal?'' she engaged him further

''I'll be back here tomorrow, and i want to bet against you, here at this table'' he explained ''if you are consistent with this winning streak and win the bet,i'll give you a hundred million dollars''

Mary's ears opened and stood at alert at the mention of the money,an amount that could change her family's fortune forever, something even her future grandkids and great grankids would benefit from its legacy

She had always wanted to start a business,a business she could expand and leave to her children when its time,so as to create a generational wealth for her future generations

Even though, when Colton was alive,he was majorly contented with life, with just having enough to live comfortably, but he always dreamed of building an empire for his children's future too, that was how much he loved his family

Her lips drooped for a while ''a million dollars?''

''A hundred million dollars'' Craig asserted, correcting her

''You mean,if i make a bet and i win, just like i've been doing for the past three hours, you'd give me a hundred million dollars?''

''Immediately,yeah'' he affirmed

She lost her breath and panted silently for a while, the deal seemed too good to be true

''Are you sure about this?''

''Everybody that knows me Mary, knows that i'm a man of my words''

''And you'll stake a hundred million just for that''

''I want to see if you can maintain this lucky streak of your's''

Mary scoffed gently ''lucky streak'' she repeated after him, does this man actually think a lucky streak could have gotten her this far?,for hours, she was playing and she didn't lose any game.It was no lucky streak,it was just her own brilliance and ingenuity, but this man doesn't have to know, maybe this is her time to make it big

''Deal'' she said

''To prove to you that this is not a sham,i'll have the contract prepared and sign it,together with you'' he said

''Okay'' she said

''If you win,you get a hundred million dollars cash from me'' he explained further ''if you lose........'' he trailed off

Mary blinked cluelessly ''i don't have a hundred million to give to you''

Craig smiled,a mysterious and dark eerie smile ''i'll take something else'' he stated

Mary frowned slightly, his words were cold and ominously piercing, like there was an agenda in his mind. Her heart ran cold for a minute, fearing whatever the man had in mind for her,but then she discarded the thoughts.Whatever he may think of taking from her,he won't get it because she won't lose, this is not a lucky streak like he thinks,it was her intellectual prowess at work and she would use it tomorrow too.Her family's life is indeed about to change for the better

''You can change your mind'' he offered ''you have until tomorrow to do so'' he said sharply and stood up,before moving away

Mary's heart pricked her as it beat loudly in her chest, something doesn't seem right with that man,she thought, looking at him as he disappeared through the stairs leading to the private section. He seemed mysterious, shady, dangerous, and full of secrets and sinister agendas, something doesn't seem right, but then what could seem right about a man who's a loan shark, she thought and shrugged

He probably wants to trap her, thinking she won't be able to pull this off, maybe that was why he postponed the deal to tomorrow. He's actually hoping her supposed lucky streak would be over by then, she thought and chuckled indulgently

He would definitely become a hundred million dollars poorer tomorrow, she thought as she stood up from the chair by the gambling machine, she needs to go pay all her lenders their money

After paying off all her debts, she bid everyone in the casino goodbye and moved towards the entrance to the hall. She would stop by the supermarket on the way home,to get some groceries,so she could prepare her kids a very fancy and elaborate dinner, their fortune is about to change and they need to celebrate it,she thought and smiled to herself as she proceeded out of the gambling hall

CORDELIA

A Chilly Haunt From The Past

Episode 2

Cordelia groaned as she sat up on the bed. After her morning routine, she had returned back to bed because she was feeling unwell

She looked at the bed side alarm clock and placed her hand on her forehead, her work shift would start in about twenty minutes and she needs to get going.Thankfully, there's no dance lesson today, since its Sunday

Camille walked into the room ''CJ,are you alright?'' she asked with concern,as she moved over to her sister ''you've been holed up in here for a while''

''I'm okay'' Cordelia managed to smile ''just a little tired, thats all''

''Hmmn'' the girl hummed softly as she walked closer and pressed the back of her palm to her older sister's forehead ''you're burning up'' she said, shaking her head ''i knew there had to be something wrong'' she continued ''and mom has gone out this morning'' she sighed ''i'll go check if there are aspirins in the house''

''I don't need aspirins'' Cordelia cut in tiredly ''i need to go to work''

''No,you can't'' Camille protested

''I have to'' she said, looking at the alarm clock beside her ''my shift starts at twelve today''

Camille looked at her sister, pity clouding her face,Cordelia really overworks herself ''i'll call the bakery and tell them you're sick'' she stated ''moreover, you shouldn't go to work today'' she stressed ''its the anniversary'' she said, softly

''The anniversary'' Cordelia muttered and heaved a sigh ''the memorial'' she said, sadly. This day, five years ago, their father passed away

''We need to light the candles'' she continued

She nodded ''i'll call in at work and tell them i won't be able to come today'' she said

''And i'll go get the candles'' Camille skipped out of the room ''and aspirins'' she whispered softly

*****************

Later in the day,Cordelia and Camille stood in front of the portrait on the table by a side in the narrow hallway.Cordelia gently lit the two candles placed on both sides of the portrait, before they lowered themselves to take a seat on the floor

''Hi dad'' Cordelia said, looking at the man in the portrait ''its been a while'' she chuckled, softly

''Yeah,we really miss you'' Camille added ''things has not been the same since you left'' she stressed as she opened the picture album with her ''if only we could just see you once and.......tell you how much we love and miss you'' she continued

Cordelia smiled, rather sadly ''dad,do you know that Camille is a serious contender for the top honors at her school?'' she said, attempting to lighten up the mood ''and with the current look of things, she could be at the top of the list through middle and high school'' she stressed ''she's a prime candidate for a full ride college scholarship''

Camille chuckled ''well,Cordelia has been my rock all through'' she said ''i just wish she would stop putting the weight of everyone else on her shoulders though'' she stressed ''i wish she'd go to college''

''Its part of my goals'' Cordelia turned to her sister ''i will, someday'' she stated as she took the picture album and opened it

''You were a very fat baby'' Camille pointed out, looking at the family picture taken after Cordelia was born

''Jerk'' Cordelia smiled as she playfully pushed her sister ''i was just a healthy chubby baby''

She laughed ''look how happy they were'' she said, gesturing at their parents in the picture ''such a perfectly happy family''

Cordelia smiled softly before scrolling through the pages, through the memories of her infancy, her first memories with her family. She scrolled for a while, before reaching the pictures taken on the day of the gender revealing party of her little sister, before she was born

''Look at that'' she smiled, pointing at the pink dust that busted forth from the can her mother was holding ''i actually remember this event'' she said ''i was so excited then, and i was really looking forward to the time the stork would take the baby over to the hospital and we would go get her''

''A stork'' Camille said

''Back then,i thought babies were bought from the hospital, after the stork had brought it from that factory in the clouds''

''Oh''

''Atleast thats what mom and dad made me believe''

''What did you think was in mom's pot belly''

''I didn't know actually,i was that gullible'' she chuckled ''i thought it was just food'' she said

''Food?'' Camille laughed

''Well,in my defense, they both had me fooled,i was four'' she said as she turned over the page to the day Camille was born, everything in the album was orderly arranged

It had become tradition for her and her little sister to light candles for their father's memorial.Every year on the anniversary of his passing, they would go through the past memories of their family documented in the picture album, reminisce about the old times, tell each other tales from the past and if they have the means, they would go across town to the cemetery to lay flowers on his grave, which they won't be doing this year, things had been really tight for the family

''The day i joined the family'' Camille said, gesturing at the picture

''Yeah'' Cordelia smiled, looking at the picture,in it,her father was on the bed side chair at the hospital holding new born baby Camille, while she was affectionately squeezed in her mother's arm, sitting beside her on her hospital bed ''it was a very wonderful and exciting day'' she stressed ''it was a bit strange seeing mom without her food bank though'' she continued ''i thought she exchanged it for the cutest baby girl in all the world''

''Awwn, thanks CJ'' Camille beamed as they stared at the picture for a while, before scrolling through the remaining pages, through the memories of the past

Mary entered the house from the veranda, she had gone to the gambling house earlier and just like the last few days, she had lost all through the games again

She grumbled and murmured continuously as she walked in and closed the door,it seems like a spell of loss and mislaying had been cast on the week for her ''what a misfortunate day'' she muttered under her breath as she walked further into the house, before seeing her kids, who were both in the corridor, seated before their father's portrait and engrossed in their conversation, oblivious to her presence

Cordelia sighed ''we were a very happy family'' she emphasized ''what happened to us'' she questioned, rhetorically.A silent wave of despondence washed over her and her eyes moistened up,but she kept the tears in,she had to be strong. The pain still runs deep but what could they do,what happened back then can't be reversed, they only need to move on and adjust to their present reality

She remembered the first memorial they had for their father. While their mother kept herself cooped up in her room on that day,she and her sister visited their father's grave to lay flowers and they wept all through their stay there

The wound was fresh back then and the memory of their father's gruesome murder still glared in their minds

Perhaps,if their father had fallen sick and died naturally,it wouldn't have been so painful, but his life was taken by an anonymous criminal, and what hurt the most was the fact that his case was closed at the station, when there were no solid clues to follow to detect the identity of the person who committed the crime. Her family never got closure, they never got justice and they probably never would, though she and her sister have finally come to terms with it but the same could not be said for their mother

A question rang loudly in her head, but who could have murdered their father, she thought. The memories she had of him was that of a calm and jovial man,who loved his family and was upright in his dealings with everyone. Was he just a victim of circumstance or his murder was premeditated, she questioned in her mind

She kept silent for a while, ruminating on her line of thought, before finally putting it all away, choosing instead to bask in the memories of the time when the sun still shone brightly in their lives

''We miss you dad'' Camille voiced

Mary inhaled deeply,a hint of reality nibbed at her heart and sadness engulfed her yet again. She had totally forgotten that it was the anniversary of her husband's passing.Colton was murdered five years ago,on this particular date. She brooded where she stood for a while, before her daughter's voice jolted her out of her pensiveness

''We lost you and we also mom on the same day'' she continued ''we've been like orphans ever since you left us''

''What?'' Mary whispered silently

''Well, she's alive'' Cordelia added ''we see her but she's just not there'' she stressed ''she's not the mom we used to know'' she asserted

Mary looked down sadly where she stood,as memories of the past flushed through her mind,is it true that to her kids now, she's more or less dead?,she thought. She's now only just realizing it,only just letting herself think it,how much she had hurt her kids

Ever since Colton passed, its like a part of her died too and she had been really distant and cold, trying to fill the void in her heart with the activities that she thought was making her happy but in reality was just ruining her

Now,she has lost all her savings and she is drowning in debt, basically not even getting anything to support her children.Cordelia has been out of school since last year and when she should be thinking about what course to take in college and her future endeavors or the career she wants to choose, her daughter is working to help sponsor her little sister, when she who should've taken responsibility for the both of them has failed in her duties

She stood still, traversing through her train of thoughts when her kids moved back to the living room, hand in hand

''Oh mom'' Cordelia called when she saw her ''you're back''

''Uh yes,i just got in'' she took in a deep breath

''Its the anniversary'' Camille said ''of dad's passing''

She gulped, sadly ''i.....i can see that'' she stressed, before turning to her older daughter ''Cordelia, are you alright?'' she asked, looking at her countenance

''She was sick this morning'' Camille said ''but i already took care of her,i gave her some aspirin from the box,i hope they're not expired''

Cordelia's brows lifted ''expired?''

A chuckled escaped Mary's lips ''no,they're not'' she said, she had gotten the medications to treat her hangover a week ago.On that day,she had gone drinking after she lost her gambles at the casino so by the time she woke up the next morning, she had been plagued with a serious headache and raging fever.Oh goodness, she has really sunk too low,she thought in her heart

''We'll be in the room'' Cordelia said ''i really need to rest'' she said as they turned back into the hallway and walked towards their bedroom

''Thats so weird'' Camille's whispering voice echoed through the walls as they entered the room ''when was the last time she noticed us'' she stressed ''or even asked about our health''

''I thought her memories were failing her'' Cordelia replied ''i mean whenever she asked questions, its about things whose answers she already knew''

''Maybe because she didn't want to ask questions whose answers she did not want to know'' Camille's whispers came back, louder ''or even care to know''

''I'm sorry'' Mary whispered to herself ''i'm really sorry''

She stood still for a while before proceeding on to her bedroom

As she entered the room, she looked around herself and sighed, the place was in complete disarray

She lowered herself to her bed and picked up the picture on her side table,it was a personal portrait of her husband

''Colton'' she called as she ran her hand over the picture ''its the memorial of the worst day of my life'' she sniffed in her tears but they couldn't be suppressed,as the tears freely slithered down her cheeks

Her tears dropped on the portrait and she immediately cleaned it off.Seeing Colton's smiling face in the picture made her heart tremble and quiver. He had always been a very happy man,a good man, full of humor and brightness, such that no one could be sad near Colton and not burst out in a hearty laughter within a few minutes

That was one of the things that attracted her to him,it was love at first sight, their souls clicked right away and she knew from that moment on that that was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, and that wish of her's would have come to pass,if someone had not thought it right to slit Colton's throat, for whatever reason, she might never know

Her wedding with Colton was one of a kind,it was not extravagant but it was modest,he was just starting off in life then, and even if her wedding would see her dressed in a cheap white dress, gotten from a thrift store, she was ready to go along with it,as long as she had Colton

They did another wedding when life had become much better, their daughters were both little,Cordelia was six and Camille was two.The second one was grand and it was the time they reiterated and restated their love for each other

The events of both weddings were as clear as day in her mind and even while the tears streamed down her face,a wide smile stretched her lips

''I miss you Colton'' she stated ''i miss you so much'' she muttered ''i've been lost,i've been really lost without you'' she stressed ''since i lost you, this is actually the first time that i'm conscious of myself and our children'' she continued ''please forgive me for failing the family'' she said, penitently

Her heart pricked her and she exhaled sorrowfully, thinking about how lonely and miserable her children must have felt when she abandoned them, choosing instead to wallow in her own pain and despondence about what happened. She didn't even care to know how they felt.It couldn't have been easy for them either, because they lost their father,an irreplaceable part of their lives, and things must have been even harder on them when they lost their mother too,to her own pain and destructive fantasies

She stayed silent for a while, and gazed at the picture for a while, before turning to look at the framed family picture, underneath her bed lamp ''i hope its not already too late to redeem myself'' she mumbled and sighed, before wiping off the tears on her face

************

The next morning, before her kids woke up,Mary engaged in a total overhauling and revamping of the house, she cleaned everywhere and rearranged the house, making it sparkling clean and modestly beautiful

After the exercise, she moved into the kitchen to prepare breakfast for her family

''Oh good morning'' she stretched her voice when she heard the children's bedroom door open

''Good...morning'' Cordelia stuttered as she stepped into the sitting room,it was like she was in another house entirely

Camille came out shortly after her,the alarm had woken them up ''what the...?'' she looked around

''You rearranged the house'' Cordelia said, surprised as she moved towards the kitchen where her mother was

''Yes'' Mary smiled

''And you're making breakfast...'' she said, amazed

''Yeah''

''Is this really mom?'' Camille looked at her mother

''Ofcourse, its me,who else would it be'' she smiled ''come on,go freshen up,the table would be set by the time you're done''

The girls looked at each other ''okay'' they said,as they both moved back through the corridor, towards the only bathroom in the house

***************

After the morning routine, the girls sat in the dining room as their mother dished out their food for them

''Berry cobbler'' Camille smiled ''dad's favorite''

''Mom...'' Cordelia turned to her mother ''what changed'' she said ''this is not how you were before''

''But don't you like this new me?''

''Ofcourse,i do'' she professed ''i'm just wondering what changed''

Mary sighed as she took a seat ''i guess i just realized how much i've been hurting you'' she said ''i really fell apart when your father died''

''We all did,mom''

She nodded slowly ''i've been really selfish, getting immersed in my own pain, while completely ignoring your's'' she said ''i neglected you and i'm sorry'' she stressed ''i know it can't make up for the past five years you've spent as though you were alone in the world'' she continued ''but i'll do my best,to make sure there's a change from now on''

Cordelia smiled ''i don't know what to say'' she glanced at her sister ''we've really missed you mom'' she stressed ''we've missed this mom'' she gestured at her mother

''I've missed you both too'' she said as she stood up and her kids moved into her arms ''i'm so sorry for not being there'' she said, holding them for a while, before they disentangled

Mary chuckled, happily as she picked up her cutlery ''happiness was always the most important thing to your father'' she said ''its something that he always prayed we have everyday'' she recounted ''and its what we'll continue to have from now on'' she asserted

The girls smiled gleefully as their mother told them stories about their father,it gave them the chance to feel a different emotion apart from sadness and dejection every time they remember him.Learning more about him surprisingly lifted the dark and stormy cloud that had fallen over them since that incident, and for the first time in five years, beams of sun rays were shining through

''I wish we could spend the whole of today together'' Mary said ''to just go out and be with each other,so we could atleast make up for some of the time lost''

''I can't,i have to go to work'' Cordelia stated

''About that,i think you're gonna have to stop'' her mother cut in ''i'll pick up forms for college for you'' she said ''and uh,whatever i have to do to see you through school,i'll do it'' she continued ''the responsibility is actually not your's to carry''

''Let me finish this year at the bakery, the money i make there can also help us with a few things around here''

''Thats my duty and i'm going to start performing it,from now on'' Mary protested

''What about the dance lesson''

''You may need to quit that too''

''But mom, that won't be possible'' she said ''like i told you before,we're preparing for a major competition and if we win, which i'm sure we would,i'll be getting fifty thousand dollars'' she emphasized ''thats enough to get me through college''

Mary sighed ''i.....i don't.....''

''Don't feel guilty mom'' she said ''we can just save, for Camille''

''I'm pretty sure i'll get an academic scholarship if i continue with this stride in school'' Camille said ''which i will'' she stressed ''by the way mom,i also have exams today'' she continued ''but my papers will be over tomorrow,so we can spend time together then''

Mary smiled ''i'll really love that'' she said ''i guess,i'll also go to the gambling house today''

Cordelia looked at her mother ''the gambling house?.....'' she trailed off,and glanced at her sister, does this mean that their mother hasn't fully changed?,she thought

''To say goodbye'' she said ''to everyone there'' she smiled ''not to gamble''

''Oh'' Cordelia said as her heart simmered down, and she breathed in relief ''by the way mom, this is really delicious'' she said as she munched on her food

''Yes'' Camille added ''its really good''

A bright smile crept up on Mary's lips ''thank you'' she said

This is the point where everything changes, the beginning of the turnaround in their lives.Quitting gambling and the other habits she got plunged in after her husband's death doesn't even need therapy for her stop. She needed an awakening, and that is what she got yesterday. She would find a way to pay up all the debts she had incurred during this misadventure she's had and she would make sure that her kids get to that bright future that she and her husband had always envisaged for them

Though one day,she wishes for them to have closure,to know who murdered Colton and why.Knowing that information would complete her healing and then maybe she would be able to let things go
