Education Ministry Ends "Era of Complacency"; Mandates Strict Accountability for Principals

​The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Suleiman, has issued a stern directive to school administrators, declaring an end to laxity and administrative negligence in the state’s educational system.

​Speaking on Thursday during a visit from a delegation of public secondary school principals from the Keffi Area Education Quality Evaluation Office, Dr. Suleiman warned that school leadership will now be held to rigorous, performance-based standards.

​"The era of complacency in school administration is over," Dr. Suleiman stated. "The Ministry will no longer tolerate lapses in responsibility. You are expected to respond promptly to official communications or face appropriate sanctions."

​The Permanent Secretary expressed concern over dipping academic standards and signaled a shift toward total transparency. As a Keffi native, she emphasized a personal commitment to strengthening the sector, with a specific focus on drastically reducing student dropout rates.

​While thanking the State Government for her appointment, Dr. Suleiman pledged her full alignment with the Governor’s mandate to provide quality, accessible, and affordable education.

​The delegation, led by Abubakar Laurat Shafa, noted that they visited to celebrate Dr. Suleiman’s elevation to the role, offering prayers for her success.

Supporting directors from the Ministry’s Human Resources, Quality Assurance, and Technical Education departments and High Education reinforced her message, urging the principals to prioritize duty and timely ex*****on of their responsibilities.

Nasarawa State Ministry of Education Tasks Principals and Teachers on Improved Performance

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Education has tasked principals and teachers to scale up their roles and responsibilities in order to promote efficient and effective teaching and learning in public schools across the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Musa Suleiman, gave the charge during an unscheduled visit to selected secondary schools under the Nasarawa, Mararaba Udege, and Agwada Area Education Quality Assurance offices. She was accompanied by the Director of Senior Secondary Schools Mr. Ogiri Christopher and Mrs. Bello Olu Director of Quality Assurance.

Schools visited included Government Secondary School Tammah, Government Junior Secondary School Tammah, Government College Nasarawa, Government Senior Secondary School Nasarawa, Government Junior Secondary School Kofar Kudu, Government Day Secondary School Nasarawa, Government Technical College Agwada, and Government Secondary School Eshshi in Mararaba Udege.

Addressing principals and teachers, Dr. Suleiman emphasized that the responsibility for students’ academic performance rests squarely with school administrators and teachers. She stressed the importance of keeping lesson notes and lesson plans up to date in line with the approved curriculum.

The Permanent Secretary expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of some administrators and teachers, noting that some principals and duty officers were absent during official hours, while others allowed students to roam freely during class periods. She also observed cases of teachers neglecting scheduled lessons, discrepancies in students’ uniforms, and failure by some principals to provide desks and furniture despite collecting funds for that purpose.

On staff appearance, Dr. Suleiman frowned at improper dressing among personnel, reminding them that as role models to students, they must dress responsibly and professionally.

However, she commended the staff and students of Government Technical College Agwada for their impressive display of locally produced technical items, including cooking utensils, a grading machine, and furniture works. To boost morale, Dr. Suleiman purchased some of the cooking utensils produced by the students.

The Permanent Secretary assured that the Ministry will continue to support schools to improve standards and help students reach their full potential.

Nasarawa State Government Warns Private School Proprietors, Permanent Secretary Receives Congratulatory Visits.

The Nasarawa State Government has expressed dissatisfaction with the operations of some private school proprietors in the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Musa Suleiman, stated this while receiving the leadership of the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON), Nasarawa State Chapter, during a courtesy visit to her office. She reminded members of existing circulars banning unhealthy practices such as mid-term breaks, non-transferable textbooks, indecent dressing, and sign-out parties. “We set standards of operation, and you must comply,” she emphasized.

While appreciating APSON for the visit, Dr. Suleiman appealed for stronger collaboration with sister associations to complement government efforts in providing quality and accessible education.

APSON Chairperson, Hajiya Amirah Mbia, congratulated Dr. Suleiman on her appointment and called for inclusivity in matters affecting private schools, stressing that synergy would promote better outcomes. Other members also underscored the importance of collaboration for a harmonious relationship in the education sector.

In another development, Dr. Suleiman received congratulatory visits from the former Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Malam Mohammed Musa Dan Azumi, Permanent Member I of NSUBEB, Mr. Attah Allahnana, and a delegation from the Nasarawa State Investment Agency. All commended her dedication and assured her of their support.

Permanent Secretary Hosts AGILE SPIU, Reaffirms Commitment to Girls’ Education

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr. Khadijat Musa Suleiman, today hosted members of the AGILE State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) in her office on a familiarization and courtesy visit.

Speaking during the visit, the Project Coordinator, Hajiya Aishatu Aliyu Isoga, stated that the visit was to formally congratulate the Permanent Secretary on her recent appointment and to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry and the AGILE SPIU. She noted that the meeting also provided an opportunity to further brief the Permanent Secretary on the roles and responsibilities of the SPIU in the implementation of the AGILE Project.

Hajiya Isoga highlighted key achievements recorded under the project, particularly in the renovation of existing school infrastructure, where 515 schools are currently benefiting from School Improvement Grants (SIGs). She further disclosed that under the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) component, over 36,000 adolescent girls from poor households have been enrolled back into school, while 30 communities are expected to benefit from new school construction projects across the state.

In her response, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Khadijat Musa Suleiman, expressed appreciation to the SPIU for the visit and commended the team for their impactful work in improving access to quality education, especially for the girl-child. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the AGILE Project in the state.

Dr. Suleiman also used the occasion to commend Abdullahi Sule, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, for embracing the AGILE initiative and prioritizing investments that enhance educational opportunities for adolescent girls.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary paid a courtesy visit to the Head of Service, Barrister Abigail Waya, where she expressed appreciation for the support and confidence reposed in her appointment and posting. She pledged to exceed expectations and introduce innovative approaches to further strengthen the education sector.

Dr. Suleiman also visited her immediate predecessor, Mallam Muhammed Sani, to thank him for his continued guidance and support as she assumes her new responsibilities.

Nasarawa State Government Commends National Council on Education, Inaugurates Quality Assurance Committee

The Nasarawa State Government has commended the National Council on Education for its bold and strategic efforts to address declining standards in Nigeria’s education sector.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D.W. Mamman, gave the commendation while inaugurating the State Steering Committee on Education Quality Assurance at the Ministry’s headquarters. He also praised the proactive role of the Federal Ministry of Education in championing reforms to reposition the sector.

Dr. Mamman, who will serve as Chairman of the committee, explained that the newly inaugurated body is mandated to coordinate the implementation of the National Education Quality Assurance Policy in Nasarawa State, organise specialised training for quality assurance practitioners, and conduct comprehensive assessments of infrastructure, teaching, and learning needs across schools.

“This appointment is a call to service and a responsibility to restore quality and standards in our education system,"
He charged members of the committee.

The committee will oversee monitoring, supervision, assessment, and evaluation of schools; develop performance metrics; harmonise quality assurance activities; and promote termly school self-evaluation reporting. It will also collaborate with the National Commission for Out-of-School Children and other stakeholders to address key challenges such as out-of-school children and examination malpractice.

Administratively, the committee’s secretariat is domiciled in the State Ministry of Education. It will meet quarterly and report to the National Steering Committee through the Honourable Commissioner for Education, with funding provided by the State Ministry of Education.
Membership of the committee includes representatives from the State Ministry of Education, SUBEB, West African Examinations Council, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Police Schools, Command Schools, National Examinations Council, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, and the Federal Education Quality Assurance Service.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hajiya (Dr.) Khadijat Suleiman, has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of selected secondary schools within the Shabu and Nasarawa Eggon Area Education Quality Evaluation Offices.

​The visit was designed to gather first-hand data on school operations, specifically monitoring teacher attendance, classroom engagement, and the quality of instruction. During the exercise, Dr. Suleiman reviewed lesson plans and notes to ensure strict alignment with the approved state curriculum.

​Addressing staff during the visit, Dr. Suleiman emphasized that diligence is non-negotiable. “When principals, teachers, and evaluators fulfill their roles with sincerity and effectiveness, we will see the desired outcomes in our schools,” she stated.

Permanent Secretary Tasks Chief Evaluation Officers on Effective School Monitoring, Assures Support for Second Chance Schools

The Permanent Secretary, Nasarawa State Ministry of Education, Dr. Khadijah Suleiman, has charged Chief Evaluation Officers (CEOs) to scale up their responsibilities by ensuring effective monitoring and supervision of schools under their jurisdictions.
The Permanent Secretary made the call while receiving a delegation from the CEOs Forum in her office.

She emphasized that the work of evaluation officers must be evidence-based, noting that they are responsible for keeping a close watch on principals and teachers and reporting accurately on developments in the field.

According to her, reports submitted by evaluation officers must reflect exactly what is observed to enable the Ministry take necessary action. She further urged them to be sincere and professional in their duties, avoiding personal affiliations that may compromise their objectivity.

Dr. Suleiman appreciated the Forum for the visit and called for a stronger working relationship through the provision of timely and accurate information, stressing that reliable data remains key to the positive development of any organisation.

In another development, the Permanent Secretary also received a delegation from the management of Second Chance Schools, Akwanga.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Suleiman thanked the management for identifying with her on her recent appointment and assured them of the Ministry’s support to enable the institution deliver effectively on its mandate.

She commended the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, for his unwavering support to the institution, which serves as a training ground for out-of-school children, especially young girls, to become self-reliant.

Earlier, the Programme Coordinator of the school, Dr. Augustina Alu, said the visit was to felicitate with the Permanent Secretary on her appointment and to express the management’s readiness to work closely with her in achieving the institution’s mandate. She also appreciated the Ministry’s support, noting that the school currently has over 300 trainees.

ASUSS Urged to Prioritize Academic Excellence in Nasarawa

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Khadijat Suleiman, has called on the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Nasarawa State to place academic activities at the forefront of their responsibilities.

Receiving the Union’s leadership in her office, Dr. Suleiman emphasized the vital role teachers play in shaping students’ performance. “Being closer to our students, you are in the best position to know whether they are doing well or not. You must strengthen them and make them better,” she said.

She urged the Union to put academics above other interests, stressing innovation and creativity in teaching. “Teachers must think of ways to add value to the profession. Once this is done, teaching becomes more interesting to learners,” she added, assuring the Union of her support in advocating for improved working conditions.

ASUSS Chairman, Comrade Bello Kwara, pledged the Union’s readiness to work with the Ministry to achieve shared objectives. He requested intervention on issues including the non-payment of promotion arrears and improper placement of teachers’ salaries.

In his closing remarks, Director of Senior Secondary Schools, Mr. Ogiri Christopher, commended the Union for the visit and highlighted a recent WAEC directive that schools will not be accredited for external examinations unless teachers are registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The Commissioner for Education, Dr John DW Mamman, hosted members of the Ladies of St. Mulumba, Abuja Metropolitan Council, who paid him a courtesy visit.

The group is a Catholic faith-based association made up of wives, widows, and other women, with the mission of supporting their families and promoting spiritual and social welfare. They are in Lafia for their quarterly meeting.

The association has over 2,000 members across different denominations and is committed to humanitarian service, including supporting the needy and building houses for both members and non-members.

Education Stakeholders Meet as TRCN Registration Becomes Accreditation Requirement.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. John Mamman, on Wednesday convened a high-level meeting of critical stakeholders in the education sector at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Education to deliberate on a recent circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, directing that henceforth, no school shall be accredited unless its teachers are duly registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

The meeting attracted representatives of key institutions, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Chief Evaluation Officers, Parents–Teachers Association (PTA), All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), officials of the Ministry of Education, as well as representatives of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) and the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON).

Addressing participants, Dr. Mamman explained that the directive is aimed at strengthening professionalism and improving the quality of teaching and learning. He stressed that the TRCN registration requirement applies to teachers across primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, in both public and private schools, and called for collective responsibility to ensure full compliance.

At the end of the meeting, stakeholders resolved to constitute a committee, to be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, to fine-tune modalities for ensuring that teachers who are yet to be registered with TRCN complete their registration. The committee was given one week to submit its report.
