Nasarawa State AGILE Project Trains 100 Health Care Providers on Adolescent and Youth-Friendly Services.

The Nasarawa State Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project has organized a three-day training for health care providers on adolescent and youth-friendly health service provision.

The training, held under Component 2.2A – Life Skills, brought together 100 selected participants, from the State primary health care facilities across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

Speaking during the opening session, the State AGILE Project Coordinator, Hajiya Aishatu Aliyu Isoga, represented by the Deputy Project Coordinator, Mrs. Juliana Polycarp*, emphasized that the training was designed to address issues affecting adolescents, particularly adolescent girls who are at a vulnerable stage of life. She urged participants to pay close attention, learn new ideas, and adopt innovative approaches to better support young people.

She noted that at the end of the intensive three-day program, participants would be better informed and equipped with modern techniques to handle adolescent and youth-related health issues in their respective Workplaces.

The National Component Lead for Life Skills, Mr. Abraham Sunday, who also served as lead facilitator, encouraged participants to embrace three key principles: *be open to learning new things, be ready to relearn, and be willing to unlearn practices that are not right*.

He stressed that change begins with health providers themselves, urging them to accommodate all adolescents who seek care, not only those referred from schools.

Other speakers included Representatives of the State Reproductive Health Coordinator, Mrs. Anita, who highlighted the opportunity the training provides for both new and experienced providers, and the State Life Skills Component Lead, Mrs. Morgan Mildred, who charged participants to justify their selection by becoming ambassadors of adolescent-friendly health services.

The training reflects AGILE’s commitment to strengthening life skills, promoting adolescent health, and ensuring that young people across Nasarawa State have access to supportive, responsive, and inclusive health services.

Nasarawa Education Commissioner Receives AGILE NPCU Delegation.

A high-level delegation from the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) National Project Coordinating Unit (NPCU) has arrived in Nasarawa State for a two-day assessment of climate change impacts on educational infrastructure.

The mission, led by Mrs. Felicia Abuka, NPCU Deputy Project Coordinator and National Component Lead for System Strengthening, alongside National Components Consultant Dr. Simeon Ogbonna, aims to review the implementation of climate-responsive components within the state’s secondary schools.

The delegation was received by the Nasarawa State AGILE Project Coordinator, Hajiya Aishatu Aliyu Isoga, and her deputy, Mrs. Juliana Polycarp, before proceeding to the office of the State Commissioner for Education, Dr John DW Mamman.

During the reception, Dr. Mamman expressed optimism that the visit would further energize the state’s commitment to the project, noting that the national team’s presence puts the state on the "right track" to benefit immensely from the initiative.

Dr. Mamman explained that AGILE complements Governor Abdullahi Sule’s human capital development agenda. He highlighted that even before joining the AGILE program, Nasarawa had established a Directorate of Human Capital Development to support young people through skills acquisition and self-reliance programs. This existing framework, he noted, creates a seamless synergy with the goals of the AGILE project.

In her remarks, Mrs. Abuka said the field visit was prompted by reports from participating states on their climate change initiatives. The national team will conduct on-site inspections of selected secondary schools to evaluate their readiness for climate-related challenges and provide technical guidance where needed.

Mrs. Abuka also lauded the state’s leadership, specifically praising Governor Sule for the visible transformation of Nasarawa through landmark infrastructure projects, including the ultra-modern state secretariat and improved road networks.

She further commended the State Component Lead, Mrs. Juliana Polycarp, for her diligent work in driving the project forward. “She is doing very well, and the state is performing impressively. Other states can learn from the strategies being implemented here,” Mrs. Abuka said.

The visit is expected to conclude following a comprehensive review of school-level interventions designed to ensure that climate challenges do not hinder the progress of girl-child education in the state.

The policy, unveiled alongside its implementation guidelines, is designed to strengthen the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project and ensure that every child—regardless of gender, background, or ability—has access to quality learning opportunities.

The newly adopted framework addresses key barriers that hinder access to education, including poverty, early marriage, gender-based violence, and inadequate inclusive learning facilities. It also aligns with international and national education commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 5, the National Policy on Gender in Education (2001), and the Child Rights Act (2005).

Speaking during the official launch, Hon. Abel Bala, Chairman of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the legislature’s support for gender-responsive educational reforms.

> “Empowering girls through education is not just the right thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do,” he stated.

The Commissioner for Education and Chairman of the AGILE State Steering Committee, Dr. John Mamman, described the policy launch as a major achievement under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, noting that it reflects the administration’s strong resolve to advance education reforms across the state.

> “This policy will expand opportunities for marginalized learners, particularly girls, and enhance school enrollment, retention, and completion rates in Nasarawa State,” he said.

AGILE State Coordinator, Hajiya Aishatu Isoga Aliyu, commended the government’s unwavering support for the project and called on traditional and religious leaders to intensify advocacy efforts on the importance of educating the girl child.

In his remarks, Mr. Aloko William, State President of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), acknowledged the impact of the AGILE project, noting that it has facilitated substantial infrastructural improvements across schools, including upgraded water and sanitation facilities and the provision of essential learning materials.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Mrs. Julian Polycarp, Deputy Project Coordinator of AGILE, described the launch as a “key milestone” in advancing gender equity in education. She revealed that Nasarawa is the third out of 18 AGILE-participating states to formally launch the Gender Policy and urged the State House of Assembly to give prompt consideration and passage to the policy when presented as a bill.

The 123-page policy document serves as a comprehensive guide to ensuring the effective, inclusive, and sustainable implementation of the AGILE Project in Nasarawa State.
