Federal Fire Service Equips NYSC Corps Members with Life-Saving Fire Awareness in Keffi

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Nasarawa State Command, has intensified its commitment to safeguarding lives and property through a comprehensive fire safety enlightenment programme at the Magaji Dan Yamusa NYSC Orientation Camp, Keffi.

Acting through its Human Resource Management Department, the Command deployed four personnel to participate in the 2026 NYSC Batch A Stream II Orientation Exercise. The initiative was designed to equip corps members and officials of the National Youth Service Corps with essential fire safety knowledge, emergency response skills, and preventive strategies for use during the orientation exercise, throughout their service year, and beyond.

The team was led by Assistant Superintendent of Fire (ASF II) Abdullahi Jimoh, who coordinated fire safety coverage across the camp. He also delivered detailed lectures and supervised practical fire simulation exercises aimed at building real-time response capacity among participants.

The programme featured structured fire safety lectures alongside hands-on demonstration sessions. Corps members and camp officials actively engaged in the exercises, significantly improving their awareness and preparedness for potential fire emergencies.

Other members of the team included Assistant Inspector of Fire (AIF) Nana Asheu, AIF Hassan Kpanja, and Fire Assistant (FA) Esther Emmanuel.

In a bid to ensure holistic safety coverage, the team also extended its sensitization efforts to camp marketers and kitchen staff, educating them on effective fire prevention measures to mitigate risks within the camp environment.

The exercise recorded impressive participation and compliance levels, marking a significant boost in fire safety consciousness among all stakeholders within the camp.

What you need to know about FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

🔥 HOW DOES ABC DRY CHEMICAL REALLY WORK?

Not all fire extinguishers work the same—
and understanding how they work can make a big difference in an emergency.

ABC dry chemical extinguishers use monoammonium phosphate, a fine yellow powder designed to stop fire quickly and effectively.

🧯 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DISCHARGE IT?

- It interrupts the chemical chain reaction
This is the primary way it stops fire—breaking the reaction that keeps flames burning.

-It forms a coating over the fuel
This helps separate oxygen from the fire, adding a smothering effect.

🔥 ON CLASS A FIRES (WOOD, PAPER)

The powder forms a protective layer on the surface,
helping prevent the fire from starting again.

🧯 WHY IT’S COMMONLY USED

(DCP) ABC extinguishers are multi-purpose:

✔ Class A – Wood, paper, trash
✔ Class B – Flammable liquids
✔ Class C – Electrical equipment (non-conductive)

💡 That’s why it’s one of the most recommended extinguishers for homes.

⚠️ IMPORTANT REMINDER

Fire extinguishers don’t just “put out flames”—
they work by removing elements of fire like heat, oxygen, or the chemical reaction.

Using the right extinguisher means faster control and safer outcomes.

*PRESS RELEASE*
10th February, 2026

The Zonal Controller, Zone P, comprising Nasarawa and Plateau States, CF Hajara S. Zukogi, has delivered a comprehensive lecture on the Performance Management System (PMS) to officers and men of the Federal Fire Service, Nasarawa State Command, Lafia.

In her address, the Zonal Controller formally introduced the new PMS policy to personnel, describing it as a change mantra and a strategic roadmap toward achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. She emphasized that, in line with the mandate of the Federal Fire Service, the Service must prioritize the prevention of incidents before their occurrence through a high level of responsibility, efficiency, and improved performance at work.

She explained that performance under the PMS will be assessed weekly and monthly, unlike the Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER), which is conducted yearly. According to her, the system promotes active participation between supervisors and supervisees in achieving organizational objectives, eliminates bias commonly associated with the formal appraisal system, and adopts critical and objective evaluation criteria.

The Zonal Controller further delivered an in-depth lecture on mastering PMS implementation, providing a clear roadmap for agency leadership, while also giving an overview of the appraisal system under the new policy framework.

To fast-track the effective implementation of the PMS, a seven-member Core PMS Team was inaugurated. Additionally, a four-member Human Resources (HR) Team, and an 18-member Change Champions Team were constituted, PRS department is still undergoing structure.
All teams were given clear marching orders to ensure the successful implementation of the policy across the Service.

The lecture concluded with remarks from the State Controller, DCF Nwachukwu Eno Kelechi who expressed appreciation to the Zonal Controller for the step-down training and detailed transmission of knowledge on the new policy.
