Niger Speaker, Sarkin Daji distance self marriage of 100 girls in Niger
@ Accuses Minister of women affairs for misleading the public

From Jonh Adams Minna

Following controversies sorrounding the decision of the Niger State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji to sponsor the marriage of over 100 girls in his Constituency, Mariga local government area of the state, the speaker says he has withdraw his involvement in the wedding

The speaker however said that all the expenses already insured and the materials purchased towards the success of the marriage will be handed over to the parents of the brides, saying that "the if the parents wished to go ahead with the marriage of their daughters so it be but I have removed my hands".

The speaker announced the withdrawal of his involvement in the mass wedding in Minna on Tuesday when he addressed the press to further clarify the controversies generated by his intention.

He described as unfortunate and embarrassing the actions of the honorable minister for women affairs Uju Kennedy Ohanenye for blowing the whole matter out of proportion without first all finding out from him (the speaker) the motive behind his kind gesture.

"I am highly disappointed in the minister for women affairs and it is unfortunate that she allowed herself and her office to be misled by social media reports without finding out from me the true situation on ground concerning this marriage.

"She never bothered to get across to me to even finding out the motive behind this Humanitarian gesture because I didn't force any girl into marriage, it was the parents of the girls that approached me and solicited for my support and I gladly accepted to assist them.

"Again this was done after due consultations with religious leaders, traditional leaders and other critical stakeholders before the Brides were carefully selected. They were 270, but I told them that I can only provide support for 100 of the intending Brides for now.

"So for the minister for women affairs to be threatening me with court action on issue that she knows nothing about and never bothered to find out the true situation of things is quite unfortunate. My action has the blessing of the parents, religious and traditional leaders, including key stakeholders from my Constituency.
"The minister should know that both my religion and tradition do not allow girls of marriageable girls to roam around in the street. We don't allow prostitution or promiscuity in the north. This thing is being done with good intentions but some people decided to make issue out it".

Sarkin Daji pointed out that it is disheartening to hear a minister for women affairs who has never visited any Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps as a result of bandits activities in Niger state to see the plight of women and children but only sitting in Abuja and be threatening to stop marriage of orphans whose parents are victims of bandits attacks.

"This is politice taken too far by the minister. She should be properly educated on the culture and tradition of the north girls of marriageable age are not allowed to roam the streets.
"But I have decided to distance myself from participating in the marriage, and if the parents of the girls allowed the minister to stop the marriage of their children so it be.

"I have provided the material support needed from me, and I will not go beyond that if the parents like let them stop the marriage of their children because a minister sitting in Abuja has threatened to go to court
"I will leave the minister with the parents of these girls. Let the minister go to Mariga and stop the parents from marrying out their girls. People playing dirty politics over what they know nothing about", he added.

Election Tussles: Court Dismisses Kano Gov. Interlocutory Appeal
newtelegraphng.comAug 24, 2023 1:06 PM
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Thursday, dismissed Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Interlocutory appeal seeking to set aside the ruling of the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay delivered on 13th, July 2023.

In its judgement, the Court described Abba K. Yusuf’s Appeal against APC and 2 others as “frivolous, vexatious and deserve penalty of dismissal”

Abba Kabir Yusuf had filed an Appeal against a Subpoena granted to a Witness Dr Aminu Idiris Harbau, to come and testify in the ongoing Governorship legal tussle by the Kano State Elections Tribunal, insisting that the Court had erred in its action.

The Governor filed an interlocutory appeal before the Court of Appeal, Kano Judicial Division, challenging the ruling of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal delivered on 13th July, 2023 in a petition between All Progressives Congress, (APC) against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and 2 others.

In a notice of Appeal dated and filed at the Tribunal Secretariat before final onward transmission to the Court of Appeal, the Appellant, ( Abba Kabir Yusuf) is praying an order allowing the appeal and set aside the ruling of the Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi delivered on 14th by Akintan-Osadebay. In a six grounds of appeal formulated by counsel to the Appellant, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN argued that the learned judges of the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal erred in law when they granted the application of the 1st Respondent, (APC) on leave to call a subpoenaed witness, Dr. Aminu Idris Harbau against the clear provision of paragraph 4(5) of the first schedule of the Electoral Act, 2022

Abba Kabir Yusuf further alleged that the Judges of the Tribunal erred in law when they refused, failed and neglected to consider as required by law Appellant’s submission on the interpretation of a provision of the Electoral Act, 2022 in arriving at the decision, thereby denied Abba Kabir’s right of fair hearing.

According to the ground three of the Appellant, the Tribunal erred in law by granting the application of APC, to written deposition on oath of Dr Harbau, when, Petitioner/Respondent didn’t disclose any substantial or extreme circumstances in the application for alleged failing to the said deposion with the petition.

The Abba Kabir Yusuf also alleged that the Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay erred in law when they granted the application of APC when there was no prayer for an extension of time for the Tribunal to exercise its power in granting the application.

The Appellant similarly argued that the Tribunal erred in law when they refused to consider the provision of paragraph 17 of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act, 2023 with respect to other directions, which ought to be prayed for within 10 days, after the entering of appearances, but not later than 10 days, after the filing of the reply.

The Judges of the Governorship Elections Tribunal erred in law to have issued a summon, pursuant to the letter of the 1st Respondent (APC) dated the 11th of July, 2023 when the document that was issued as a subpoena was neither known to the three classifications of subpoenaed known to law.

However, the Court of Appeal in its ruling dismissed the Governor’s Appeal as “Frivolous and Vexatious which deserve dismissal”.
