Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda had received a powerful delegation from the National Social Safety-net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) Team led by the Head, National Social Register (NSR), Mohammed Dikko Bala, the Head Administration and Human Resource, Mrs. Amaka Osiegbu and Emetulu Austin, the National Auditor.

The brief interactive session had in attendance the Coordinator, Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim and other key management staff of the Unit.

The visiting team updated tge Governor on the current status of the National and State Social Register, ongoing effort to update and integrate the Social Register with National Identification Number NIN, as well as expansion of the State Social Register.

In his response, Governor Radda acknowledged the giant strides being made by the State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim on the mandate given to her towards ensuring proper coordination of the State Social Register, saying her effort of integrating NIN with the Social Register is commendable.

The team thanked the Governor for the numerous development strides recorded under his administration.

The meeting had in attendance top government officials including the Deputy Governor, Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe, Commissioner Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Malik Anas and Executive Secretary Katsina State Development Management Board - KTDMB, Dr. Mustapha Shehu among others.

KATSINA SOCU:

Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit SOCU (National Social Safety-net Program) under the leadership of the State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim has conducted a one-day refresher training for Enumerators.

The Enumerators were drawn from three pilot Local Government areas of Daura, Malumfashi and Dutsinma.

A statement by SOCU Information Officer, Marwana Abubakar Darma said the Enumerators are to conduct face to face socio-economic data collection of all Poor and Vulnerable Households targeted recently in the areas, as part of the giant stride being made to expand State Social Register.

In attendance at the training venues to ensure a hitch-free and successful training session were the State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim, Principal Officers, other SOCU staff, Desk Officers representatives of Enumerators conducting Social Register update as well as Enumerators participating the training.

In all the places, the State Coordinator charged participants to adhere strictly to the rules governing the exercise, establish good rapport and desist from all modes of distortion.

She also charged them to remain committed to the job, ensure tactical appoach with the community members while administering surveys and take accurate geo-point, saying only clean data work will be paid to Enumerators.

Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim noted that the Enumerators are to capture and send their respective works by using Computer Aided Personal Interview CAPI.

In an interview, some Enumerators assured readiness to justify the confidence reposed on them by committing to their duty diligently.

*KATSINA SOCU EXPANDS SOCIAL REGISTER (SSR):*

The Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU) implementating National Social Safety-net Program (NASSP) under the Katsina State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has commenced expansion of the State Social Register (SSR), targeting more poor and vulnerable households in three pilot Local Government areas.

This is contained in a statement by SOCU Information, Education and Communication Officer, Marwana Abubakar Darma.

It said, the expansion is taking place at Kusugu, Ubandawaki-A, Ubandawaki-B Wards in Daura, Malumfashi-A Ward in Malumfashi and Makera Ward in Dutsinma, each representing the three Senatorial Zones in the state.

This followed rigorous training of officers at the affected Local Governments by SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim among other staff after wider consultations and sensitization of major stakeholders across the areas.

The State Coordinator urged officers, including supervisors, Local Government Desk Officers as well as Community Based Targeting Teams CBTTs to do their utmost best and adhere strictly to the rules governing the exercise for successful outcome.

She noted that inclusion of any beneficiary depends upon a criteria set by each community during Focus Group Discussion FGD, which she described as a meeting that engages all community members, including elderly persons, women and youths.

The State Coordinator said enumeration will follow later where enumerators will visit beneficiaries house to house to collect and collate their socio-economic data through face-to-face Computer Aided Personal Interview -CAPI.

Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit SOCU implementing National Social Safety-net Program under Katsina State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in collaboration with Katsina Community Action Resilience and Economic Stimulus KT-CARES is to commence Social Register Expansion in the state.

A statement by SOCU information and Communication Officer, Marwana Abubakar Darma said SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim made this known in Dusinma while on a sensitization visit to Dutsinma Local Government Chairman as well as Yandakan Katsina, District Head of Dutsinma.

Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim who spoke through the Head, Monitoring and Evaluation, Malam Tukur Ibrahim said the pilot exercise will commence in three Local Government areas of Dutsinma, Daura and Malumfashi.

She implored for their continued cooperation for the success of the exercise adding that, Frontline End Partners would soon be deployed across the state to assist in National Identification Number - NIN- enrolment of targeted beneficiaries as well as those to be targeted into the register to meet the criteria of benefiting social protection programs.

Responding, Dutsinma Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Kabir Abdussalam represented by his deputy, Shukrana Sale Damaga and Yandakan Katsina, District Head of Dutsinma, Alhaji Muhammad Sada represented by Yariman Dutsinma, Alhaji Amadu Abubakar, pledged unwavering support needed for positive result.

They also assured to extend the message to all stakeholders for adequate coverage during the exercise.

KATSINA SOCU SIGNS MoU WITH MALTESER TO ASSIST POOR AND VULNERABLE HOUSEHOLDS

Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU), implementing the State Social Safety-net Program under Katsina State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a German based Non-governmental Organization - MALTESER - to support poor and vulnerable households in Mashi Local Government Area of the State. .

A statement by SOCU Information and Communication Officer, Marwan Abubakar Darma said the formal signing ceremony took place at the premises of SOCU in Katsina where SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim signed on behalf of the Unit while the MALTESER Country Director, Johnson Byamukama signed on behalf of the organization.

The Country Director was accompanied at the ceremony by his Management Information Officers of Katsina, Abdullahi Usman Ahmed and and that of Maiduguri Borno State, Ahmed Bukar.

It would be recalled that the organization started operations early this year in Mashi and Kurfi Local Government areas as part of its efforts to fight Open Defecation practices as well as improve Water and Sanitation Hygiene in the State by constructing numerous toilets and boreholes in the areas.

Mr. Johnson Byamukama noted that the organization has mined 338 households from the State Social Register - SSR - of Poor and Vulnerable Households - PVHHs - housed and managed by Katsina SOCU.

He maintained that the financial support for poor households in Agala of Gailu Ward and Malumfashin Yan-Tsari all in Mashi Local Government was for multi-purpose Cash assistance, implemented after thorough validation process.

According to the Country Director, the intervention was meant to make them self reliant by creating small scale businesses as well as assisting towards the development of their respective communities.

He explained that each beneficiary would receive a card for easy identification and will receive ₦206, 000 one-off support.

SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim acknowledged the giant strides made by the organization to mine from the register, noting that this compliments the efforts of the State government in assisting less privileged people in the society.

She urged the organisation to assist more poor households in the Register, saying doors will remain open for all to come and uplift the lives of Poor and Vulnerable Households in the State.

Highlights of the occasion was the formal handing over of the signed agreement document to the Country Director by SOCU State Coordinator.

KATSINA- SOCU COMMENCED SENSITIZATION FOR THE EXPANSION OF SOCIAL REGISTER

Daura Emirate Council has described the foreisight of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sustain Social Protection Program to lift million Nigerians out of poverty as a welcome development.

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruk Umar made the remarks when he received on a sensitization visit, the management team of Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit - SOCU, National Social Safety-net Program led by the State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim.

He also acknowledged the support of Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda towards expansion of the State Social Register through Katsina State Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus, KT-CARES program.

Alhaji Umar Faruk assured to extend the sensitisation message for the expansion of Social Register to all relevant stakeholders towards realizing the set objectives.

He expressed happiness for the selection of Daura Local Government to kick start the expansion exercise.

Earlier, SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim told the Emir that the visit is to intimate the Emirate a plan to expand the Social Register, solicit royal support for the success of the exercise and sensitize on the relevance of integrating NIN with Social Register.

She said this is part of plan by President Bola Tinubu to support fifteen million NIgerians before the end of this year.

Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim stressed that the expansion program will kick start with three Local Government areas of Daura in Daura Senatorial Zone, Malumfashi in Funtua as well as Dutsinma in Katsina zone.

In the meantime, Daura Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Bala Musa while receiving the Management team of SOCU in a similar visit, assured readiness to support towards the success of the expansion exercise by extending the sensitisation to relevant stakeholders.

Katsina State House of Assembly has assured to support the ongoing efforts to integrate the National Identification Number NIN with the State Social Register.

The Speaker, Alhaji Nasir Yahaya Daura gave the assurance when he received the management of Katsina State Operations Coordinating Unit SOCU, National Social Safety-net Program led by the State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim on an advocacy visit.

He directed House members to provide a Coordinating agent in their respective areas who will be assisting towards achieving the desired goals,

According to him, integrating NIN with the State Social Register would add unprecedented value to the register in the face of the public.

Speaking earlier, SOCU State Coordinator, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim recalled that the Nigerian Government has prioritized social protection interventions as a key strategy to reduce poverty and socio-economic vulnerabilities.

To achieve this, she said, the National Social Safety Nets Project (NASSP) was established in partnership with the World Bank.

The Coordinator explained that the project aims to expand safety nets to poor and vulnerable population through the National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation .

She added that NASSCO is tasked with consolidating existing social safety net programs and building the National Social Register (NSR), a database of poor and vulnerable households.

According to her, the register is utilized for mining of beneficiaries across various safety nets intervention programs, irrespective of funding source or beneficiary group.

Hajiya Karima said this has enabled different stakeholders to deliver social assistance programs effectively and transparently.

In Katsina State, she stated, the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU) has registered over 900,000 households with more than 3 million members.

The Coordinator noted that State Social Register (SSR) has been utilized by several organizations, including UNWFP, UNDP, AGILE, KATCHMA, UNICEF, and KT-CARES, to deliver social assistance programs.

Notably, she said, the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO) recently disbursed over ₦6 billion to over 80,000 beneficiaries under the Federal Cash Transfer Program.

However, Hajiya Karima said SOCU office is currently updating the register by integrating National Identity Numbers (NINs) into the NSR, a prerequisite for benefiting from social intervention programs, and will soon commence Social Register expansion across the state.

She then requested support from the House in sensitizing constituents on the importance of acquiring NINs to facilitate their enrollment and registration.

The Coordinator also requested the House and its members to sensitize the general public about the importance of NINs and their role in government interventions and Support or sponsor the acquisition of NINs for vulnerable households.

She also requested them to Invite government agencies and philanthropists to utilize the social register for social assistance programs as well as provide any additional support to SOCU Office.

#(SOCU) map out modalities to enhance Social Register

As part of effort to enhance credibility to the State Social Register (SSR) of Poor and Vulnerable people as well as Rapid Response Register (RRR), the Katsina State Operations Coordination Unit (SOCU) has held a high-level meeting with Supervisors, Staff as well Local Government Desk Officer.

The meeting, which was held at Old Katsina Government House was attended by key officials including the Executive Director of KASIPA, Dr. Mudassir Nasir and the State Manager of School Feeding Programme, Hajiya Zainab Abdulhadi Tafashiya, aimed at assessing the progress so far recorded in the ongoing NIN Enrollment, Social Register integration with NIN as well as expansion of the register.

The new State Project Manager, SOCU, Hajiya Karima Abdulkarim, who doubled as Project Manager, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) in her welcome address, emphasized the relevance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving the unit's goals.

She identified the State Social Register as a crucial tool to identifying and reaching the poor and vulnerable people in the communities.

The meeting also discussed among other issues, the distribution of safety kits to Desk Officers, to ensure that they were equipped with the necessary tools to perform their duties safely and effectively.

This initiative, according to her, underscored the unit's commitment to the well-being and safety of its officers and the communities they serve.

The Project Manager however said the meeting provided a platform for open and honest discussions, allowing participants to identify real problems and proffer solutions in the best interest of their jobs, the Government, and the people they serve.

She added that SOCU remained committed to its mandate of coordinating and implementing government programmes and initiatives, noting that the meeting is a significant step towards achieving its goals.
