27/11/2025

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) Kano State Chapter is set to host a significant conference, thanks to the support of Dr. Dalhatu Abubakar Zurmi, a distinguished librarian and Zonal Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service, Kano Zone.

A delegation from the NLA Kano State executive committee, led by Chairman Mal. Nazir Muhammad, recently paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Zurmi, inviting him as the Special Guest of Honor at the upcoming conference. The delegation included Vice Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yusuf, Financial Secretary Hasiya Salihu Yusuf, Assistant Secretary Tijjani Bashir, Treasurer Abdulrahman Magaji, NALISS President, and Secretary of Bayero University Chapter.

Themed "Navigating the Future of Librarianship in a Dynamic Information Landscape through Innovation, Technology, and User-Centered Services," the event promises to be a landmark gathering of library professionals and stakeholders.

Dr. Zurmi, a certified librarian, has pledged his support for the conference, which is expected to feature prominent speakers and panel discussions on the latest trends and innovations in librarianship.

The conference will take place on December 2, 2025, at Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University, Kano, and will be followed by a Dinner and Award Night on December 3, 2025, where outstanding contributions to librarianship will be recognized.

The NLA Kano Chapter invites all library professionals, stakeholders, and members of the public to participate in this important event.

Signed
Nazir Muhammad

Join us on December 7, 2021, at 10:00am when the American Center, U.S Embassy Abuja in collaboration with She Forum Africa, host a virtual panel discussion to design an action plan. The image of dusty stacks and somber scholarship doesn’t quite fit what’s happening in many libraries these days.

Libraries still lend books and provide Internet access, of course, but many also are tapping into the latest technologies and exercise crazes.

In California, librarian Jessica Zaker leads a punk rock aerobics class at her Sacramento public library branch. Elsewhere in the building, her colleague Lori Easterwood runs a program showing patrons how to bring designs they’ve made on computers to life with state-of-the-art 3-D printers.

Troy University in Alabama installed exercise bikes with laptop tables in its library so students can get get their bodies moving along with their minds.

Libraries also can play important roles as community centers, where groups can gather for children’s programs, English-language learning and community organizing.

A Wisconsin entrepreneur started the Little Free Library movement, which has put 6,000 “take a book, leave a book” boxes in communities in all 50 states and 40 countries besides.

The U.S is home to more public libraries than McDonald’s restaurants. Outside the U.S., library-like environments are available in more than 700 locations across 152 countries in American Spaces. Visitors there can learn about the U.S., practice English and get information about studying in the U.S.

The common thread in these and the more familiar versions of the library is engaging and enriching a community. Could be you’re long overdue to check one out.

Libraries are increasingly accessible, not only in number, but in what they offer; in some libraries, you can find exercise equipment and 3-D printers.

Fred Ramon Dos Santos Gomes from Brazil has been accepted into nine U.S. universities! Read his tips for international students:

💡 Practice your English. It's the first step and most important step for international students interested in studying in the U.S.

💡 Make a college/university list. Fred advises making a list that takes into account the cost (and availability of scholarships and financial aid), acceptance rate, and academic profile. It's important to decide which colleges are the best fit for YOU.

💡 Connect with EducationUSA. Look for and connect with your nearest EducationUSA center. He says this is helpful to receive orientation and guidance on steps to take during the application and admission process.
