KANO STATE — Tourism Renaissance Under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf: A Two-Year Success Story

Kano — In just two years under the visionary leadership of His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State — widely celebrated as the most tourism-friendly governor in Nigeria in 2025 — the ancient city of Kano has witnessed a remarkable revival and expansion of tourism activities, cultural heritage preservation, and destination development. This progressive transformation is positioning Kano as a premier cultural and historical tourism hub in West Africa. 

Cultural Revitalization and Festival Tourism

In October 2025, Governor Yusuf issued a landmark Executive Order mandating the annual celebration of the historic Durbar Festival across the four emirates of Kano, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. This decisive action came after a period of suspension and was aimed at reinstating one of Northern Nigeria’s most vibrant cultural celebrations as a focal point for tourism and cultural pride. 

The Durbar, a spectacular horse-riding and procession festival recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, now draws domestic and international visitors, creating new economic opportunities for artisans, entertainers, hospitality providers, and local businesses. 

In the same spirit of cultural celebration, the state government inaugurated the Kano Festival of Arts and Culture (KanFest) — locally known as Kalankuwa — as a dedicated annual event celebrating arts, music, crafts, storytelling, and traditional heritage. The festival serves as both a showcase of Kano’s deep cultural roots and a platform to attract investors, creative youth, and tourists from across Africa and beyond. 

Governor Yusuf’s leadership at KanFest 2025 was also recognised with an Award of Achievement for Cultural Leadership by the African International Documentary Festival Foundation, highlighting his commitment to heritage preservation and youth engagement.

On behalf of the Managing Director, Kano State Tourism Board, Alhaji Tukur Bala Sagagi, other government officials of the Board, and the entire staff, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the late Honourable Members of the Kano State House of Assembly, who represented Ungogo Local Government Area and Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

Their demise is a great loss to Kano State, the House of Assembly, and the people they served with dedication and commitment. They will be remembered for their contributions to governance and the development of their constituencies.

We pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants them Jannatul Firdaus, forgives their shortcomings, and grants their families, colleagues, and constituents the strength and patience to bear this painful loss.

Kano State Governor Honoured as the Best Friendly Governor of Tourism and Culture at the 2025 Africa Tourism and Creative Economy Expo (AFTCREE)

Abuja, Nigeria — November 2025

The Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been conferred with the prestigious award of “Best Friendly Governor of Tourism and Culture” at this year’s Africa Tourism and Creative Economy Expo (AFTCREE) held in Abuja.

This remarkable honour recognizes the Governor’s unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and strategic investment in tourism development, cultural promotion, and heritage preservation across Kano State. The award also reflects the administration’s ongoing reforms aimed at revitalizing the tourism sector and positioning Kano as a leading cultural destination in Africa.

Representing the Governor at the event was the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji, who led a high-powered delegation from Kano State to the Expo. The delegation included:
• The Managing Director, Kano State Tourism Board
• The Executive Secretary, Kano State History and Culture Bureau

• Senior Special Reporters / Senior Reporters (SSR/SR) attached to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and its agencies.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor while receiving the award, Hajiya Aisha Lawan Saji expressed deep appreciation to the organizers of the Expo for recognizing Kano State’s efforts.
