COAS UNVEILS CENOTAPH FOR 11 FALLEN NDA NAVAL CADETS IN ONNE, REAFFIRMS THAT THEIR SACRIFICE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General W. Shuaibu, on Saturday, 5 July 2026, unveiled a cenotaph and laid wreaths in honour of 11 Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Naval Cadets of 41 Regular Course at the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School, Onne, Rivers State. The solemn ceremony underscored the enduring commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to preserve the memory of personnel whose service and sacrifice continue to inspire national duty and strengthen the nation’s security institutions.

Addressing dignitaries, military personnel and families of the departed cadets, the COAS said he stood with profound reverence, deep humility and a solemn sense of duty to honour his coursemates who paid the ultimate sacrifice during training at the then Nigerian Naval College, Onne. He noted that the occasion reflected the Armed Forces’ enduring values of honour, courage, discipline and selfless service in defence of the nation.

Lieutenant General Shuaibu stated that the cenotaph stands as an enduring tribute to 11 young patriots whose aspirations to serve Nigeria were tragically cut short on 23 July 1990 during a boat-handling training exercise at the College waterfront. He recalled that 23 first-year NDA naval cadets were undergoing routine training when their boat collided with a stationary jetty and capsized, resulting in the loss of 11 promising officers-in-the-making, describing the incident as one of the saddest chapters in the history of military training in Nigeria.

NADCEL 2026: ARMY RESTORES HOPE IN COMMUNITIES AS COAS COMMISSIONS RENOVATED SCHOOLS, TOWN HALL, SOLAR BOREHOLE, STRENGTHENS PEOPLE-CENTRED SECURITY

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to placing people at the centre of national security, as he commissioned a series of newly renovated community projects and installed solar-powered boreholes across the senatorial districts of Rivers State.

The projects commissioned include: Community Secondary School, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area , Rivers East Senatorial District, Community Secondary School, Lueku (Lussue), Khana Local Government Area, Rivers South-East Senatorial District; a Community Town Hall in Oyigbo Local Government Area Rivers South-East Senatorial District and a solar-powered borehole in Degema Local Government Area Rivers West Senatorial District.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Sunday, 5 July 2026, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026, was more than the unveiling of infrastructure, it symbolised the restoration of dignity, opportunity and hope for students, teachers, and host communities.

Speaking at the event, the COAS described the interventions as a reflection of the Nigerian Army’s deepening bond with the people. He noted that through its Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives, the Army is not only addressing security challenges but also responding to critical community needs that directly affect daily life.

He explained that similar projects ranging from school renovations and town hall rehabilitations to the provision of solar-powered boreholes are all aimed at improving living standards and strengthening trust between the military and civilians. According to him, sustainable security is built not only through military capability but through collaboration, shared responsibility and public support.

IGP DISU VISITS ENUGU, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SCIENCE-DRIVEN POLICING, CHARGES OFFICERS ON PROFESSIONALISM

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to advancing intelligence-led, technology-driven, and evidence-based policing during a working visit to Enugu State.

As part of the visit, the IGP participated in the commissioning of the Centre for DNA Forensics, Criminal Investigation and Biotechnology (DeFOCI), where he described the facility as a strategic national asset that will strengthen criminal investigations, enhance the administration of justice, and support the adoption of scientific methods in modern policing.

The IGP commended the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Godfrey Okoye University, the DNA Learning Center, and all partners whose collaboration led to the establishment of the Centre. He noted that the facility would provide valuable opportunities for forensic research, capacity building, and institutional collaboration, while supporting investigations into serious crimes including homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, cybercrime, human trafficking, and sexual offences.

Addressing officers of the Enugu State Police Command, the Inspector-General commended their dedication and sacrifices in maintaining peace and security across the State. He charged personnel to remain vigilant, strengthen intelligence gathering, embrace continuous professional development, and uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.

The IGP further reassured officers that the Force would continually prioritize personnel welfare, training, operational capacity, and modern policing equipment, while maintaining zero tolerance for corruption, misconduct, abuse of office, and all forms of unethical conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

NADCEL 2026: TEAM LAGBAJA CLINCHES POLO TITLE AS NIGERIAN ARMY STRENGTHENS ESPRIT DE CORPS

Team LAGBAJA emerged champions of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 Polo Tournament held on Saturday 4 July 2026 in Port Harcourt, reinforcing the commitment of the Nigerian Army to fostering teamwork, resilience and esprit de corps as critical enablers of operational effectiveness.

The tournament forms part of the activities commemorating the 163rd Anniversary of the Nigerian Army, reflecting the Service’s enduring emphasis on physical fitness, healthy competition and camaraderie as essential attributes for a professional and combat-ready force capable of meeting contemporary national security challenges.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, presented the championship trophy to Team LAGBAJA at the conclusion of the tournament, commending the participants for exhibiting discipline, determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

NAF JOINS MULTI-AGENCY SANITATION DRIVE TO SAFEGUARD LIVES AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY RESILIENCE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through its component of Operation MESA, has reinforced its commitment to civil-military relations by supporting the Lagos State Government's environmental sanitation enforcement exercise aimed at reducing flood risks and protecting lives and property. Conducted from 29 June to 2 July 2026, the operation brought together the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and the NAF to clear illegal structures obstructing drainage channels along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, covering Alaba Market, Mile 2, Ojo and the Trade Fair axis.

The intervention followed recent heavy rainfall and flooding that disrupted businesses and damaged properties across parts of Lagos. By partnering with relevant state agencies to promote environmental safety and disaster prevention, the NAF continues to demonstrate that its service to the nation extends beyond air operations, supporting initiatives that enhance public safety, strengthen community resilience and foster enduring civil-military cooperation.
