J.D. Gomwalk, the first military governor of the defunct Benue-Plateau State, is often cited as a model of leadership due to his significant development records and vision during his tenure from 1967 to 1975. Here's why his leadership might be studied:

1. Focus on Education:

Establishment of the University of Jos: After efforts to secure a satellite campus from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, failed, Gomwalk successfully turned to the University of Ibadan, which established its Jos campus in November 1971. This campus later became the University of Jos, a major institution of higher learning in Nigeria. This demonstrated his commitment to expanding access to education for the people of his state.

2. Media Development:

Founding of "The Nigerian Standard" Newspaper: In 1972, Gomwalk's administration founded "The Nigerian Standard," a government-owned daily newspaper. This initiative provided a platform for information dissemination and public discourse within the state and beyond.

Establishment of Benue-Plateau Broadcasting Corporation (BPBC) Television Station: In February 1975, Gomwalk opened the BPBC television station in Jos. This marked a significant step in the development of media infrastructure in the region, with the black-and-white service initially covering 75% of the state and plans for color transmission.

3. Advocacy for Minority Rights and Regional Development:

Championing the Middle Belt: Gomwalk is remembered for his dedication to the liberation and advancement of minority ethnic groups in the Middle Belt region of Nigeria. He was seen as a "rebel governor" for consistently challenging issues that did not serve the interests of these minority tribes.

Independence from "Monolithic North": He initiated programs and projects aimed at giving the people of the Middle Belt a separate identity and freeing them from what some perceived as the "apron strings of the monolithic North." This included efforts like establishing a Middle-Belt Marketing board.

4. Visionary Leadership and Selfless Service (as described by supporters):

Visionary Template: He is described by some as a "visionary template for an egalitarian nationhood," who worked towards equality and social justice.

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be. —Rosalynn Carter.
