Did You Miss Our Last Palaver Tree Discussion?
Not to worry, we've got you covered!😆

Topic: Navigating Uncertainty: The Impact of Potential U.S. Policy Shifts on Africa's Energy Transition Ambitions.

The discussion explored how shifting U.S. climate policies could directly or indirectly affect Africa's clean energy ambitions.

With concerns about the U.S. pulling out of key aid bodies like USAID and the return of aggressive fossil fuel rhetoric like “Drill, Baby, Drill” under the Trump administration, panelists warned these changes could negatively impact Africa’s climate action.

A deeper conversation emerged around global power dynamics, industrialized nations contribute the most to climate change but face fewer consequences, while Africa contributes the least yet suffers the most from floods to droughts to food insecurity. This imbalance raised critical questions about fairness, global responsibility, and the urgent need for climate justice.

We also reflected on the just-concluded COP 29 in Azerbaijan. Many felt that African voices were underrepresented and that global promises to support African climate action often go unfulfilled.

A standout moment was when an attendee asked, “How many Thomas Sankaras are willing to die for Africa?” a bold call for fearless leadership on the continent.

Key Challenges Raised:
- Weak political will.
- Lack of climate financing.
- Low public awareness

Solutions Discussed:
- Africa must craft and implement its own climate policies as we can’t keep waiting for direction from the West.
- Climate advocacy was described as “sharing the gospel of climate”. We need to raise awareness, especially among young Africans.
- Invest in local innovation and develop policies grounded in African realities.

Did You Miss the March Palaver Session? 😃

Not to worry, we’ve got you covered! 😁

March was Women’s History Month, and the topic of discussion was: “Analysing the Progress of Women’s Rights in Nigeria: 30 Years Post-Beijing Declaration.”

We tackled the core issues the Declaration raised, which includes poverty, education, health, media, violence, and women’s political/economic power.

Women in Politics:
It’s still tough for women to fully participate in politics. Many face resistance from men, are held to impossibly high standards, and deal with the false narrative that women don’t support each other. We encouraged mentorship among women and called on men to be more open-minded and supportive of women in leadership.

Economic Empowerment for Women:
We highlighted the limitations of the usual approach teaching a trade to a large group and offering only initial funding. A more effective strategy would be to provide loans and support systems that allow women to form repayment groups. This creates room for continuous growth, and greater impact.

Impact of Religion on Women’s Empowerment:
Some religious teachings and leaders still reinforce negative stereotypes about women. These were widely condemned during the session, with a strong call to challenge and change such beliefs.

Violence Against Women:
Violence against women, remains a serious issue. A statistic analysis revealed that approximately one in seven women dies every minute from domestic violence. Unfortunately, these reports are often not taken seriously by the relevant authorities.
The Nigerian Police Force was called out for often failing to take such reports seriously, thereby silencing victims and making justice almost impossible. The system, especially the law enforcement must do better.

Women’s Education: On education, there’s been solid progress. More girls are in school now than ever before. But when we asked the big question, where is Nigeria now on the road to gender equality? the answer was sobering. We’ve taken steps back. Globally, gender equality may be 200 years away but for Nigeria, it may even be longer than that. It’s been 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, and we’re still far from where we should be.

The discussion session was nothing short of an eye-opener and whether you joined the session or not, we hope these insights got you thinking.

Let’s keep pushing for change and advocating for the progress of women rights in Nigeria.

If anything stood out for you, share your thoughts in the comment section!

See you in the next Palaver Tree Discussion. 😁

Exciting news 🎉 !

Last month, we announced the call for applications to join our internship program, and the response was overwhelming, with over 50 applications received. We are thrilled to announce that we have selected 24 talented young individual leaders from across Nigeria and Africa to join the second cohort of our internship program.

Building upon the success of our first cohort, where we admitted and worked with 15 talented young leaders from across Nigeria, we look forward to the incredible journey ahead with this new group.

Over the next 12 weeks, these interns will be immersed in a wholesome learning and career-building experience, developing their skills as change agents and community leaders.

We are not only excited to welcome them to our team, but also eager to learn from their diverse perspectives and witness the unique ways they will contribute to our mission and the invaluable work we do in youth and community development.

Congratulations and welcome to TARP Africa!

🎉 Happy International Women’s Day. Let’s Accelerate Action together!✌🏽

There is no better time to than now. As the decade of Action for the SDGs is drawing closer to an end, and as the world struggles to close the gender gap, there is no better time than to join the effort that is reducing gender inequality and improving quality education.

As an organisation, we remain steadfastly committed to seeing women strive in governance and in taking climate action. For this year, we focus and strongly insist that female participation in politics - whether in elective or appointive positions - is necessary for national development and harassment and intimidation of all sorts have no place in a democracy, be it budding like Nigeria’s.

We encourage you to go beyond paying lip service to ending gender equality—pledge (and follow through with your pledge) to accelerate action necessary to reduce gender inequality.

We convene yet again under our proverbial Palaver Tree for the first time this year, 2025.

Join us, next week Friday, the 28th of February at 2:30pm under the tree at the Jos Innovation Hub to discuss “Student Loans in Nigeria: A Pathway to Opportunity or a Road to Financial Hardship?”

This topic is important because, with the introduction of interest-free loans and a two-year post-NYSC repayment policy, we want to explore its feasibility, challenges, and impact on Nigerian students and young people going forward.

Come, let's talk!
