Nigeria formally assumed the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) on 26 May 2026, marking another important opportunity for our country to contribute to international peace, security, and multilateral diplomacy.

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has approved two thematic priorities for Nigeria’s Presidency:

1.Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear-Weapon States Against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons (Negative Security Assurances).
This theme reflects Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to global peace, nuclear disarmament, and the protection of non-nuclear-weapon states. It aligns with Nigeria’s foreign policy objective of promoting a rules-based international order and supports the 4D foreign policy pillar of Democracy by advocating for equal security and justice for all states.

2.Improved and Effective Functioning of the Conference on Disarmament (Revitalization of the CD).
This theme seeks to strengthen the effectiveness, relevance, and responsiveness of the world’s sole multilateral disarmament negotiating forum. It resonates with Nigeria’s commitment to constructive multilateral engagement and supports the 4D pillars of Development and Demography, recognizing that a more effective disarmament architecture contributes to global stability, sustainable development, and a safer future for generations to come.

Nigeria looks forward to working with all member states in a spirit of dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building during its Presidency.

NIGERIA CONGRATULATES ETHIOPIA ON THE OBSERVANCE OF ITS NATIONAL DAY

The Federal Government of Nigeria extends its warmest congratulations to the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the joyous occasion of Ethiopia’s National Day, celebrated annually on May 28. This day marks a significant moment in the history of a great nation, commemorating Ethiopia’s proud sovereignty as Africa’s oldest independent country and its resilience in pursuing unity and progress.

Nigeria acknowledges Ethiopia’s pivotal contributions to the advancement of African unity, its strategic role as host of the African Union's Headquarters, and appreciates its sustained commitment to promoting dialogue, regional peace, multilateral diplomacy, and continental integration. As two of Africa’s most populous and influential nations, and founding members of several continental institutions, Nigeria and Ethiopia share a unique bond of friendship, solidarity, and a common vision for a peaceful and prosperous continent. Our bilateral relationship is robust and multifaceted, anchored in a shared commitment to continental stability and economic revitalization.

Nigeria remains committed to deepening economic ties that reflect our strategic importance. We commend the ongoing collaboration between our private sectors, notably the transformative investments by Dangote Industries in Ethiopia’s cement and fertilizer sectors. Furthermore, we look forward to finalising agreements on broader collaboration and partnerships in other key sectors for the mutual benefit of both countries.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria reaffirms its firm solidarity with Ethiopia as it implements its bold domestic reforms and continues to play a stabilizing role in the Horn of Africa. We are confident that the strategic partnership between Abuja and Addis Ababa will continue to grow, fostering greater trade, investment, and shared prosperity under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Once again, we extend our felicitations to the Government and the resilient people of Ethiopia.
