Remember the popular Yoruba fable that later turned to statement of fact, that a warrior just returned from warfare, and he was explaining how he killed several enemies during a fight, but some cynics doubted his exploit, claiming that he was exaggerating the figure, and in anger the warrior stormed out; he laid his sight on a mother chicken with her chicks, to demonstrate how he killed at warfare, he strangled the hen and chicks to death instantly. He then convinced those who care a hoot to know that if they could not witness what obtained at the war fare, at least they could see what happened to the hen and her chicks.

It was said that Mr. Iyiola Omisore, the perennial governorship hopeful is a violent man, who has penchant for bloodshed, and that he must kill to achieve his ambition, but his image makers, of recent worked hard on his repackaging; they made us to realize that he is now P.hD holder as if there is no professor who is intellectually deficient; they told us that he is a philanthropist by expending more money on publicity on a gift he gave to an infirmed at OAU teaching hospital in the new year; they made him to grant so many newspapers’ interviews to deny his knowledge of murder of Chief Bola Ige who was gruesomely slain in his room. So, the opinion moulders were expecting a refined Omisore, the governorship aspirant this time. read http://www.oranmiyan.org/2014/02/11/baba-onikerosene-goofs-again-by-goke-butikakuro/

Isaiah Benjamin
— February 14, 2014

Wife of the sacked People’s Democratic Party’s Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Hajiya Asiya Mohammed Bello yesterday registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Gabasawa Ward in Unguwan Rimi, Kaduna North Local Government area of Kaduna State with registration card number 0623374.

Our correspondent, who monitored the ongoing APC registration in Kaduna yesterday confirmed that she had registered before he arrived but however got details of her registration from the registration officer.

Efforts to speak with Asiya Bello when our correspondent visited Tukur’s residence at Gwari Crescent in Unguwan Rimi as to why she choose to go with the APC and not the PDP, her husband’s party was not successful. She was said to be fasting and ready to pray after the break of the fast and will not be available to speak.

TTUKUR-WIFE-APChe house is a duplex with several boys quarters located at a sharp bend on a large expanse of land at the Gwari Crescent GRA of Unguwan Rimi.

According to Malam Yahaya Gambo, who claimed to be Asiya Bello’s driver, “It is true that Hajiya Asiya registered today with of the APC” while showing her registration card which was still in his possession. He, however, said, “You will not be able to speak with her because she fasted today and she is preparing to break the fast and pray, you may wish to come and see her at about 9 or 10am tomorrow (Today)”.

Also confirming her registration, the supervising officer for the registration of the APC in Kaduna north in Kaduna State, Shaibu Lilly, said, “It is true that our registration officer registered Tukur’s wife and issued her a registration card. This is one of the developments of democracy in Nigeria where you see an immediate past PDP chairman’s wife registering for APC”.

“As far as I am concerned, they might be united as husband and wife but may have different opinions as the far as the political scenario is concerned, it is to show you that it is a falling period for the PDP”.

He said the crisis in the party in Kaduna State which was due to different opinions of the members has not in any way affected the registration exercise as many party members trooped out to register, describing the registration exercise as very successful.

Asked whether Hajiya Asiya was sponsored by PDP or her husband to register in APC for ulterior motives, Lilly said, that is not true but simply democracy at work.

A close family source to the Bamangas, who craved for anonymity confirmed to FRIDAY LEADERSHIP that Asiya is still Bamaga Tukur’s wife and that the house also belong to him.

When contacted, an APC chieftain in Kaduna State, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said he cannot confirm her registration as he was in Abuja for an official engagement.

He however said, “I do know that Bamagar’s wife has been a supporter of the APC. She has been a progressive person.”

When the Kaduna State PDP Chairman, Chief Abubakar Gaiya Haruna was contacted on the development, he simply said he was not in Kaduna and was not aware of the matter, as such could not speak on it.

He said, “well, I am not aware of that, am presently not in Kaduna and cannot speak on the matter.”

When asked whether or not he knows any of Bamanga Tukur’s wives in Kaduna, he said “Bamanga Tukur is a Muslim and may have more than one wife, I have been to his house several times here in Kaduna and Abuja but I have not seen any of his wives, so I cannot point at any of his wife because I have never met any of them”.

SaharaReporters said is stands by its report on the Nigerian economy.

Online news platform, SaharaReporters, and Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are back in a bitter tango, dueling now over what the newspaper claims to be a corrupt and stained management of import waivers that is badly hurting the nation’s economy under the watch of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala

The current duel, the second in five months, was sparked by a publication by SaharaReporters revealing “fraud” and “corruption” in the finance minister’s handling of import waivers in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters said Nigeria’s import waiver scheme administered by Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala is frequently manipulated and administered in a way that fosters fraud and corruption, forcing the minister into a defensive position.

The minister’s press office shot back, describing SaharaReporters’ allegations as falsification and distortion of facts.

A statement from the minister’s office claimed that the Nigerian government reformed the import waiver policy in 2011, offering the privilege to all entitled companies.

“All companies or entities involved in a sector or given activity will benefit from the same waivers once they meet the necessary criteria,” the statement signed by Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala’s Special Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, said.

The minister went ahead to publish the list of beneficiaries of the waiver scheme, but the news website insists it was “doctored”.

“The document was compiled in a way designed to feature names that would attract little or no curiosity. In addition, the document referred the public to the main page of the Budget Office rather than to a specific web address containing the waiver information,” SaharaReporters argued in a follow-up letter to the minister.

“Why has the Federal Ministry of Finance found it so difficult to release all the names of beneficiaries from import waivers, including public officials in the latest list?” SaharaReporters asked.

Waiver for the First Lady

A waiver issued to the First Lady to import BMW cars for the All African First Ladies’ Peace summit held in Abuja in 2012, is a major contentious issue between the finance minister and the news website.

The waiver, for 200 BMW cars, was granted to the First Lady for the occasion that attracted only 54 dignitaries. That waiver was subsequently forwarded to Coscharis – an auto company involved in another car scandal concerning the acquisition of armoured cars for the aviation minister, Stella Oduah, at outrageous sums.

While the finance minister justified the waiver saying the arrival of the African First Ladies “necessitated vehicles for the transport of these visiting dignitaries,” SaharaReporters questioned its legality.

“Why was the First Lady of Nigeria, whose office is unknown to the Nigerian constitution, offered waivers to import BMWs for a conference she hosted? And why did Ms. Okonjo-Iweala not question the fact that the First Lady then handed the waivers to Coscharis Motors Limited, an auto dealer implicated in some fraudulent deals, including Oduahgate?” SaharaReporters asked.

The minister is yet to react to the latest shots.

SaharaReporters and the Finance Minister have engaged in similar bouts in the past. In July, SaharaReporters published a story suggesting that Nigeria was broke and was planning to lift funds from the N3.4 trillion pension funds to enable it finance its deficits.

The minister faulted the report and accused the paper of peddling falsehood. But the publication says it’s standing by its report, insisting that the Nigerian economy is indeed in shambles.

Unemployed youth say what is evidential is a spate of unemployment.

A body of unemployed graduates & other youth in Nigeria has requested for information on the alleged 1.6 million jobs created in 2013.

The Adebisi Thomas Adewole Foundation, ATA Foundation, an avenue through which unemployed graduates and other unemployed youth of Nigeria demand for their rights, aired their grievances and desires in a letter to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy.

Citing the Freedom of Information , FOI, law, they requested for evidence on the existence of these created jobs.

“In 2013 as reported by the Nigerian Tribune on 17th of September, 2013, the World Bank put the unemployment rate in Nigeria at 22 per cent and the youth unemployment rate at 38 per cent. The Team Leader and representative of World Bank Country representative, Professor Foluso Okunmadewa, made this disclosure at the Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) organised by Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P), in Abuja,” the foundation said, in the letter signed by Adebisi Adewole, the Chairman of the foundation.

Citing update on the state of unemployment in the country as drawn from the National Planning Commission presentation and the divergence in the ‘official’ reports on jobs created, the foundation said that unemployment rate in Nigeria worsened under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“This conclusion was drawn after the National Planning Commission presented the 2011 Performance Monitoring Report on Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Abuja on 3rd of October, 2013. The report indicated that the unemployment rate in Nigeria in 2010 was 21.1 per cent, a figure that increased to 23.9 per cent in 2011,” the group said.

ATA Foundation said that the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, quoted the report as stating that, “In 2011, Nigeria’s unemployment rose to 23.9 per cent compared with 21.1 per cent in 2010,” and that the report referenced its facts from the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

“ThisDay on AllAfica.com and the Nigerian Vanguard Newspaper both related on December 18, 2013 that the National Bureau of Statistics said that 54 per cent of Nigerian Youths were unemployed in 2012. This was contained in a report issued in Abuja by NBS in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Youths Development in December of 2013″, it added.

Many other reports by national, regional, and global bodies have also corroborated the rising unemployment rate in the country despite the initiation of SURE-P, YOUWIN, and other such programmes to create employment for millions of Nigerians particularly the youth by the Federal Government.

“During an interactive session with Private sector in December, 2013, The Punch Newspapers related on December 30, 2013 that during your presentation, you disclosed that a total of 1.6 million jobs were created in 2013. ThisDay on AllAfrica.com on January 20, 2014 also gave an account of your reiterating same at the South-East and South-South Professional Forum in January, 2014. At the forum you also said 2 million of such jobs will be created in 2014,” the foundation told Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala.

The ATA Foundation said in accordance with Section 2, 3, 4, of the FOI Act, it wants to know “The number of jobs created in each sector of the economy in 2013, the amount appropriated and expended to create such jobs and the sustainability plan of the jobs after the federal Government has withdrawn its support as the case may be” the foundation said, while also demanding supporting documents.

“We look forward to receiving the required information promptly and, in any event, within 7 days of the receipt of this application as provided for in the Freedom of Information Act, 2011,” the foundation said in its letter.
