POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN OGUN STATE

A reliable source of information has it that the renewed crisis in Ogun State is not unconnected to the politics of 2027 in the State.

I was reliably informed by my source that Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola 'Yayi', who represents Ogun West in the 10th Senate, is said to be interested in becoming the Governor in 2027 at the end of Dapo Abiodun's tenure. His ambition is being opposed by Governor Abiodun, and of course the PDP.

The embattled former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, is said to be working in cahoots with Senator Yayi. To contain Yayi, 9 APC legislators who are Governor Abiodun's loyalists and 9 PDP legislators in the House of Assembly teamed up and impeached the former Speaker Oluomo yesterday, Tuesday, January 23, 2024. In his place, they elected Hon. Oludaisi Elemide (APC), a loyalist of the Governor as the new Speaker.

It should be noted that of the three ministers in the cabinet of Chief Bola Tinubu, who are of Ogun State origin, Yayi got one slot (Ishaq Salako), former Governor Gbenga Daniel got one slot (Bosun Tijani), while the last slot came directly from Chief Bola Tinubu (Wale Edun). Governor Dapo Abiodun has zero input.

It is believed that Yayi will definitely fight back because the Politics of 2027 has started in Ogun APC.

Historically, Ogun State is usually the first state to kickstart politicking in Nigeria in every election cycle since 1999.

RE: CHUKWUMA ODII VS FRANCIS NWIFURU: WILL ABAKALIKI BLOC WAKE UP?

FACTS AGAINST FICTION

The first headline was the title of the article written by Dr Obinna Oke from Ezza North LGA of Ebonyi State. In the brief article laced with partisan bias, Dr Oke tried so hard to spite the candidacy of High Chief Ifeanyi C Odii as the 2023 PDP governorship candidate in Ebonyi State. Among the highlights of his article were that the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, Sen. David Umahi fielded Chief Odii as an artifice to retain power in the Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone against the Abakaliki bloc. He furthered by alleging that while the campaigns lasted, no attack was meted out on the PDP candidate as against what was the fate of the other candidates, moreover the APGA's Professor Ben Odoh. Dr Oke also alleged that Umahi carefully designed a political coup against the Abakaliki bloc using his cousin, Chief Odii to achieve that by sponsoring him in the PDP against the other aspirants within the party. He also alleged that Umahi knew that the APC's governorship candidate and the current Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt Hon. Francis Nwifuru was going to crash at the governorship election tribunal in Abuja by virtue of his purported defection and belonging to the PDP even till after the general elections, and still gave him the ticket of the APC. Dr Oke alleged as well that the outcome of the tribunal case was going to see Professor Odoh and Chief Odii going into a runoff poll, citing that it was going to be a fight between Ebonyi South and the Abakaliki bloc.

As the Publicity Secretary of PDP in Ebonyi State and a director in the governorship campaign council of the PDP, I think I'm in a better position to respond to the spurious punchlines Dr Obinna Oke tried to establish with regard to the subject matter. Narrating the account of the primary election of the PDP will take time, but I'll just say a little as many knew, and still know what happened. To start with, Engr David Umahi isn't a cousin of Chief Odii. They're not from the same LGA neither do they share any consanguinal tie. Dr Oke lied in his effort to present a fictitious piece of narrative against the humane candidate of the PDP, Chief Ifeanyi Odii. Noteworthy here also is the fact that there's no such thing as the Abakaliki Bloc in Ebonyi State. That existed during the defunct Anambra State where Anambra, Enugu and a part of the present day Ebonyi State were constituent to one state. Since after the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996, the state has ceased to exist in blocs. We rather have a three senatorial zone structure: Ebonyi Central, North and South. It's instructive to assert that there's no cultural tie that bonds Ebonyi North and Central as a bloc. Within the two zones exist the Korrin and Igboassa peoples with distinct difference in cultural backgrounds. They recognise themselves as independent peoples with different ancestral histories. One now would wonder where Dr Oke came about with the idea of the Abakaliki Bloc he so much betoned in the article. Ezza doesn't celebrate any cultural feast together with Ikwo and Izzi, vice versa. To believe that Abakaliki Bloc exists, such cultural bond should be in place and not just a diction resuscitated in every election season just to whip prejudice.

It'll make no meaning to start discussing the case at the tribunal judgment of which is still being expected. It could be tantamount to contravention of the legal rules. So, I won't argue anything about the tribunal case and its prospects. The tribunal has the exclusive powers to declare who or not should be the true governor of Ebonyi State at the end of the arguments and counterarguments of the both parties.
It's, therefore, pertinent to state that the governorship of Ebonyi State has never been hinged on a clearcut zoning scheme. It has always been a circumstantial turn of events as the three senatorial zones always produce aspirants and candidates in each year of election. The winner emerges from popular decision of the voters, not on the ground of where they're from. Ebonyi State has grown past primordial bias of sectional interest. The choice of Chief Odii by the delegates at the PDP primary election in Abakaliki came as a result of his personality and track records as a business man and philanthropist. Ebonyians voted at the primary, not aliens. They knew that Chief Odii is from Ebonyi South and went ahead to vote for him. Ebonyians campaigned and voted for him during the main election. His candidacy came to route out what could have been a piece of disaster if not stopped midway in the PDP by producing him. It's not in doubt that the polls of 2023 in Ebonyi State were manipulated in favour of the APC. It's a fact for itself, reason the APGA governorship candidate whom Dr Oke supports went to court alongside Odii to seek redress.

Umahi against the claims of Obinna everybody knew how he stopped PDP from campaigning in the state. The resistance he met was as a result of the massive acceptance of the PDP by the people of the state. Umahi stopped PDP from campaigning in Ikwo. He sealed the campaign venue with sand. The chairman of Ikwo LGA through Umahi warned PDP not to campaign in Ikwo as the security of the members of the party wasn't guaranteed. The same thing happened in Ishielu, Onicha, Ohaozara, Ivo, Ebonyi, Izzi and Abakaliki LGAs of the state. How then did Umahi support PDP's Chief Odii? Umahi also stopped PDP from using the state-owned radio station, stadium and mounting the campaign billboards of the party among other threats that he attempted to execute against the party. Ebonyi State is currently in disarray and only Chief Odii has the wherewithal to fix the state bringing to bear his many years of exposure and economic development. As a private individual, his track records in talents development, capacity building, charitable giving, scholarship, economic empowerment, bursary awarding among others are obvious enough to be dampened by mere partisan sentiment borne of aggressive aggrandisement and clannish bias. Majority of the Ebonyi people pray and wish that the messianic intervention of Chief Odii comes to bear in the governance of the state in no time. Therefore, it's appalling to allege that Chief Odii was the brainchild of Umahi even when Umahi was a menace to the man in question and his political party. It's a fact too glaring to damn that Ifeanyi Odii is not a candidate borne out of zoning formula as such never existed in the first place. It's a fact for itself as what's on the wrist doesn't require mirror to be seen.

AN INSPIRATIONAL TRIBUTE TO EBONYI YOUTHS ON THE MOMENTOUS OCCASION OF THE 2023 UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY WITH THE THEME “GREEN SKILLS FOR YOUTH: TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE WORLD “

12/08/2023

Protocol

Fellow patriots and highly esteemed Ebonyi Youths!

Today, being the 12th Day of August 2023 is a unique date, set aside by the United Nations to not only highlight and celebrate the youth resource in creating a better world, but also to amplify engagement and leadership conversations in all areas of decision making for fostering the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals through the youth agency.

As always, I am humbled by the heavy tasks which this day signifies. Much more, I’m also delighted to announce that the state's development model for the coming administration of the state under my leadership by God’s grace shall assiduously and vehemently apply relevant requisitions and cutting-edge solutions to address these heavy tasks with urgency, resourcefulness and results it deserves. This is because of the God factor we have and the expertise of renowned men and women in our team.

Today! I join you to celebrate the theme of this year's event: "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World," to remind us where we have been, where we are now; where we should be and much more, the shared aspirations which shall be strategic to our administration’s focus once we come on-board by God’s grace and providence.

It is no doubt that comparative analysis among the South East states shows that Ebonyi youths are the most challenged, most derided and most socio-economically burdened by difficulty in navigating through life, and of course heavily accosted by the darts of overcoming some sort of overwhelming institutionalized poverty of the mind and systemic age-long hedge of several communities and families below the poverty line.

Yes! This is a staggering truth whether we believe it or not. And for me, I thought to touch on this sensitive issue which has been an issue of conversation across various platforms, (online and offline), perhaps, with no intention to stir up your minds to begin to reminiscent on the penuries and economic travails of our people, especially, young people and women; but to remind all well meaning Ebonyians of our assuring promise of hope and to let you know that I'm fully aware of what human development indices, statistics and indicators are saying about us, and more importantly, to draw our attention to the fact that the time to break out of this current deplorable condition of things in the state is nearer than ever. And it is my confidence that the fulfilment of our mandate's promise of possibilities shall ignite our shared hope to rise up together and to transform our lives, communities and state in no distant future.

Consequently, let me at this point recognize and applaud the exceptional achievements of young individuals from our beloved state in various fields who are making us proud. First and foremost, I would like to express my utmost admiration for Nwota Chukwuemeka (MC Walter) and his relentless pursuit of a World Guinness Record. His unwavering determination, resilience, and commitment to excellence are an inspiration to us all. His pursuit of this prestigious record showcases the boundless potential within our youth. It highlights the fact that with passion, dedication, and innovation, young Ebonyians can transcend limits and achieve greatness, becoming role models for future generations.

Furthermore, I would like to extend my heartfelt commendations to Obinna Udenwe for his remarkable achievements in the literary world. Obinna's outstanding work, "Colours of Hatred," and other literary works have not only captivated readers but has also shed light on important societal issues. His thought-provoking storytelling has sparked conversations, challenged norms, and inspired countless individuals. I am thrilled to felicitate with Obinna Udenwe for winning The “Chinua Achebe Prize for Literature 2021” and for emerging finalist in the recent “NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature”. His contributions to literature exemplify the talent, creativity, and intellectual prowess that young Ebonyians possess.

Similarly, it would be unfair to confine this recognition to MC Walter and Obinna alone, as indeed, across every field of life, young Ebonyians are making extraordinary strides, leaving an indelible impact on our society. Whether it be in education, science, technology, entrepreneurship, arts and entertainment, sports, or social activism, our youth are breaking barriers, defying expectations, and shaping a better future for Ebonyi and beyond.

To this end, upon our assumption to the Ebonyi State seat of power by God's grace, our administration shall be highly committed to providing unwavering support for young achievers and fostering an environment that nurtures talents. We shall prioritize the development of comprehensive educational programs that integrate green skills and sustainability into the curriculum; provide incentives for both local and international education, trainings and capacity development for young people as we bridge our knowledge gap and reposition our state in the global knowledge economy space.

Moreover, we will establish mentorship programs that connect young talents with accomplished individuals in their respective fields. Through these partnerships, our youth will gain invaluable guidance, inspiration, networking opportunities and start-up funding. By fostering these connections, we will ensure that the achievements of MC Walter, Obinna Udenwe, and other young achievers are not isolated incidents but part of a larger culture of excellence and success in the state.

In addition we shall fuel the culture of legit innovation, creativity and industry of the state’s youth constituency through a legislation that'll establish and domesticate *"Ebonyi Youth Hall of Fame",* which will be managed through an endowment fund. This is part of our promise of possibilities to institutionalize a highly coveted "State Youth Honours Award" for Ebonyi Youths in recognition for outstanding achievements, encouragement for future success, celebrating the state's youth role models; promote youth community pride and togetherness, create a lasting legacy and history for the next generation and further shape government's strategic investment in the youth constituency of the State.

In conclusion, I charge and challenge every young Ebonyian to join forces with me in changing the narratives about our people. Together, let us create an Ebonyi that nurtures and supports the aspirations of our young talents across all fields of life. This is because, by providing young people with the opportunities and resources they need, we can build a sustainable and prosperous society that prepares young people for off-take across sectors and celebrates their achievements as a source of inspiration for others to the betterment of our dear state and country.

Thank you!
