What does it take to plan, budget, and drive the vision for a megacity like Lagos?

Our Fellows explored this and more during an insightful Brown Bag session with the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, who shared valuable insights into how the Ministry serves as the central planning engine of Lagos State.

The session highlighted the seven core departments driving the Ministry’s work, spanning economic planning, medium-term budgeting, and international development partnerships.

Our Fellows also gained deeper insights into how the State addresses infrastructure gaps, tracks education and tourism allocations through strategic cash planning, and collaborates on the Lagos State Climate Change Plan.

The engagement further reinforced for our Fellows that true impact lies at the intersection of data transparency, institutional strength, and cross-ministry collaboration.

We usually think of saving for a rainy day as a financial habit, focused on setting money aside for uncertainty. But preparedness is not only financial. It also applies to how we manage our environment in everyday life.

The way we handle waste, dispose of materials, and use shared spaces affects what happens when it rains. These everyday choices build up over time and influence how resilient our communities are during rainfall.

Thinking circular helps connect these actions to outcomes. Saving for a rainy day is not only about money, but also about how responsible we are today in preventing avoidable environmental challenges tomorrow.

It was a pleasure hosting the fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy for an engaging and insightful Brown Bag Session at the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.

Alongside Heads of Departments within the Ministry, we had meaningful conversations on the critical role each department plays in driving effective governance, strategic planning, budgeting, policy coordination, and sustainable development across Lagos State.

The session provided an opportunity to give the fellows deeper insight into how government planning works in practice — from economic planning and fiscal strategy to development partnerships, project monitoring, and climate-focused initiatives.

I commend the fellows for their curiosity, thoughtful engagement, and passion for public service. It is always encouraging to interact with young leaders who are committed to shaping a better future for Lagos and Nigeria.

Together, through collaboration, innovation, and responsible leadership, we will continue to build a smarter, more resilient, and greater Lagos.
