π Africaβs Largest Floating Commodity .
September begins - and across the world, children are returning to school.
This was school in Makoko, Lagos, Nigeria.
In this waterfront community, where generations of families have built their lives along the lagoon, children traveled through narrow waterways and between wooden homes to reach classrooms that looked very different from those many of us know.
I filmed these scenes before large-scale demolitions swept through parts of Makoko in late 2025 and early 2026, destroying thousands of structures and displacing families.
That makes these images more than memories of a school day. They are a record of a community at a particular moment in time - children learning, playing and growing up in a place undergoing enormous change.
As another school year begins, the notebooks and uniforms may differ, and the journey to the classroom may be by road, foot or canoe. But the anticipation of a new beginning is remarkably universal
