SANWO-OLU INAUGURATES 44 SPORTS ASSOCIATION CHAIRMEN

•Governor charges them to nurture talents, strengthen grassroots development

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday inaugurated 44 chairmen of sports associations in the State and urged them to bolster grassroots development, identify emerging talents, and develop sustainable pathways for athletes to achieve national and international excellence.

Speaking during the official inauguration of the chairmen of the sports associations at Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the appointment as a significant step towards repositioning sports administration in Lagos.

The Governor encouraged the new sports administrators to set clear and measurable objectives for their respective associations, implement succession programmes, and establish systems capable of identifying, nurturing, and transforming raw talent into elite athletes.

He emphasised that Lagos’ reputation as a Centre of Excellence must extend beyond talent discovery to establishing the necessary structures, training opportunities, and competitive platforms to transform talents into champions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who views sports not merely as recreation but as a pathway to discipline, education, employment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth, highlighted that major sporting events create opportunities in hospitality, transportation, entertainment, media, technology, fitness, and sports medicine.

He also called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, stating that increased private investment would provide a firmer platform for sports and athlete development in Lagos State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu instructed the newly inaugurated chairmen to prioritise transparency, accountability, and discipline. He also urged them to ensure their associations maintain active competition calendars and create opportunities for women, girls, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented talents.

He affirmed that their success would be measured not by the duration of their tenure but by the athletes developed, institutions strengthened, records broken, and champions produced during their tenure.

Referring to Lagos’ recent performance at national sporting competitions, the Governor underscored what can be achieved when talent is supported by a functional system, stressing the importance of creating a continuous pathway from schools to training grounds, competitions, and ultimately to national, continental, and global stages.

He highlighted Lagos’ hosting of the National Intermediate Games as part of efforts to strengthen the city’s leadership in sports development and to provide a platform for young athletes nationwide.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, stated that the inauguration of the sports association chairmen demonstrated the incumbent administration’s commitment to sports development.

Fatodu remarked that government alone cannot develop the state’s sports sector, emphasising the need for stronger partnerships among government, sports associations, athletes, coaches, corporate organisations, schools, and local communities.

He described the new chairmen as vital links between athletes and their respective sporting communities, noting their responsibilities include talent identification, athlete development, competition organisation, technical capacity building, and creating pathways for athletes to compete and succeed.

The Director-General disclosed that Lagos State had deliberately appointed accomplished men and women across various sports disciplines to provide leadership, mentorship, and opportunities for young athletes.

Speaking on behalf of the sports association chairmen, the Chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association, Dr Solomon Alao, in his Vote of Assurance, said they are committed to supporting the government’s vision for sports development.

He said the opportunity to engage directly with Governor Sanwo-Olu had dispelled doubts about the administration’s dedication to the associations, describing the inauguration as a renewed source of strength and motivation.

Dr. Alao assured the State Government that the new leadership would strive to deliver credible, progressive, and impactful results across their respective sporting associations.

He added that the chairmen felt reinforced by the confidence placed in them and were eager to work towards better outcomes for athletes and sports growth in Lagos.

SANWO-OLU TASKS FINANCIAL REPORTING COUNCIL ON IMPROVED EFFICIENCY, AS AGENCY OPENS HEADQUARTERS IN LAGOS

It’s a new era of improved governance at the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, as the Federal Government’s agency moved to its permanent headquarters in Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, commissioned the eight-storey FRC building located on Allen Avenue in Ikeja, ending the agency’s over four decades of operating from rented offices.

Inaugurating the building, Sanwo-Olu said the development represented a new strength for the institution whose mandates directly impact investors’ confidence and economic prospects of the country.

The Governor said that leading operation from its permanent base would not only boost the regulatory agency’s efficiency and oversight of the environment it regulates, he added that the development would foster greater public trust in its ability to fulfil its responsibilities.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We gather today to commission FRC Building, thereby celebrating the strengthening of an institution whose work has direct implications for the confidence, investment and economic opportunities that Nigeria can generate.

“Businesses need confidence in the rules under which they operate. Shareholders need assurance that their interests are protected. The public needs to know that the institutions responsible for safeguarding the integrity of our economic system are doing their work effectively.

“This is where the Financial Reporting Council plays such an important role. By promoting credible financial reporting, sound corporate governance and greater transparency, the Council helps to reduce uncertainty in the marketplace. This makes investment easier, leading to significant socio-economic consequences.”

Siting the Council’s headquarters in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said, underscored the State’s pivotal position as Africa’s most important business destination, noting that most of the businesses and enterprises being regulated by FRC have their bases in Lagos.

The Governor said the regulatory agency’s operations in Lagos would improve the economic value of various services in the financial regulation sector, stressing that there would be higher demand for professionals in legal assistance, accounting, consulting technology, hospitality and transportation services.

“Our regulatory institutions must evolve
alongside the economy. We therefore expect this new headquarters to provide the platform for the FRC to improve its efficiency, deepen engagement with businesses and professional bodies, strengthen regulatory capacity, and respond more effectively to emerging challenges,” Sanwo-Olu said.

FRC Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, said the agency having a permanent workstation would not only enhance transparency and accountability in reporting finances across economic sectors, he said the feat was a step forward in making the regulator globally competitive.

He said the agency’s leadership would ensure the physical infrastructure matched the standards of operations in line with the mandates of the institution.

LASG UNVEILS 2025–2027 HIV STRATEGIC PLAN, RENEWS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE RESPONSE

The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has called for stronger stakeholder collaboration, strategic resource mobilisation and evidence-based implementation to accelerate progress towards achieving the State’s HIV targets by 2027.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun made this call today during the dissemination of the Lagos State Strategic Plan on HIV 2025–2027, held at BWC Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Animashaun stated that the Strategic Plan provides a common framework for aligning HIV programmes, resources and partnerships towards agreed targets and measurable results across the State, especially as the state has recorded significant progress in its HIV response through the expansion of prevention, HIV testing, treatment and community-based interventions.

According to her, despite the gains recorded, critical gaps remain and require sustained attention, particularly in reaching underserved populations, strengthening HIV prevention and testing, ensuring timely linkage to treatment, improving retention in care and achieving viral suppression.

Dr. Animashaun explained that the Strategic Plan, which covers the period 2025–2027, comes at a point when implementation is already well underway across the State.

She described the timing of the event as an opportunity for stakeholders to take stock of progress, identify implementation gaps, strengthen alignment and focus collective efforts on achieving outstanding targets before the end of the Plan period.

She urged stakeholders to use the engagement to develop a shared understanding of current progress and identify areas where available resources could achieve greater impact.

Dr. Animashaun reaffirmed LSACA’s commitment to providing the coordination required to strengthen stakeholder alignment, support resource mobilisation, monitor implementation and promote evidence-based decision-making in the State’s HIV response.

She acknowledged the strategic leadership of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and commended ministries, departments and agencies, development and implementing partners, civil society organisations, networks, communities, healthcare workers and other stakeholders for their contributions to the HIV response in Lagos State.

Dr. Animashaun reiterated that the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan would depend on sustained collaboration, effective coordination, adequate resource mobilisation and a shared commitment to improving HIV prevention, treatment and care outcomes across Lagos State.

The Chief Executive Officer, however, urged stakeholders to use the engagement to develop a shared understanding of current progress and identify areas where available resources could achieve greater impact.

LAGOS COMMISSIONER, T**E BENSON-AWOYINKA, HONOURED AS ‘ICON’ FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CREATIVE ECONOMY

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. T**e Benson-Awoyinka, has been honoured with a prestigious Icon Award by The Forum by Ojez in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the development of tourism, arts, culture and the creative economy in Lagos State.

The Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Idowu Johnson, who received the Award on behalf of the Commissioner on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Ojez, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, described it as a well-deserved recognition of Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka’s dedication to the growth of the creative sector and her contributions to the development of Lagos.

According to him, the honour reflects not only the Commissioner’s personal commitment to the sector but also the Lagos State Government’s sustained efforts to position tourism, arts, culture and the creative economy as important drivers of economic growth and social development.

He stated that the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains committed to creating an enabling environment for the growth of the creative industry, while promoting tourism, preserving Lagos’ rich cultural heritage and creating opportunities for practitioners and businesses across the sector.

“The administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu remains committed to leveraging tourism and culture as key drivers of economic growth, job creation, investment and social development,” Johnson stated.

He noted that Lagos continues to support initiatives aimed at developing tourism products and attractions, promoting the State’s cultural heritage, and strengthening the creative ecosystem, with the goal of further positioning Lagos as a leading tourism and creative hub in Nigeria and Africa.

The Chief Executive Officer added that the recognition would further motivate the Ministry and its agencies to intensify their efforts towards developing the State’s tourism and cultural assets, supporting creative talents and creating more opportunities for practitioners within the industry.

Johnson also appreciated The Forum by Ojez for recognising individuals whose contributions continue to make a positive impact on society, noting that such recognition serves as encouragement to public officials and stakeholders to remain committed to excellence and service.

LAGOS MOVES TO FAST-TRACK OPERATIONALISATION OF IMOTA INDUSTRIAL HUB

… Targets Industrial Clusters, MSME Growth, Skills Development, Job Creation

The Lagos State Government has commenced a phased activation plan for the Imota Industrial Hub, Ikorodu, as part of efforts to translate the State’s Industrial Policy into tangible economic opportunities, strengthen local value chains and accelerate industrial production across the State.

The Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Bada Ambrose-Medebem, accompanied by the Director-General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, and officials of the Ministry, undertook an assessment visit to the Hub on Saturday, 29th August 2026, to evaluate its readiness and identify immediate interventions required for commencement of operations.

The assessment established that the facility has significant potential to become a major industrial and economic centre, with existing infrastructure, production spaces and machinery capable of supporting early activation.

Speaking during the visit, the Honourable Commissioner described the facility as a “low-hanging fruit” with considerable potential for quick activation, stressing that the State would not wait for every component of the facility to be “100% perfect” before commencing operations.

The Commissioner said the strategic priority was to begin with facilities that are ready for use, while addressing outstanding infrastructure and operational requirements progressively.

According to her, the Hub must be developed beyond a collection of factory spaces into an integrated industrial centre built around complementary businesses, shared machinery, production, logistics, training and market access.

The proposed Industrial clustering model will bring businesses within related value chains together, enabling Manufacturers, Processors, packaging companies, logistics providers and other supporting Enterprises to share infrastructure, reduce production costs, strengthen local sourcing and improve competitiveness.

Agriculture and Agro-processing have been identified as priority areas, with opportunities in food processing, Rice-related activities, packaging, Agricultural Inputs, Machinery fabrication and maintenance, Equipment servicing, storage and logistics.

The visit also opened a new dimension for collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), with the Hub expected to serve as a practical platform for technical and vocational training, industrial apprenticeship, equipment-based learning and certification.

The Director-General of ITF, who participated in the assessment, expressed the Fund’s readiness to explore collaboration with the Ministry in using the Hub to bridge the gap between technical training and practical industrial experience, particularly by exposing trainees to operational machinery and production environments.

The proposed model will enable the Hub to combine production and manufacturing with skills development, industrial support and market access, creating a stronger pipeline of skilled workers and potential entrepreneurs for Lagos’ industrial sector.

The State Government will also address key Operational requirements, including reliable power, logistics and heavy-duty truck management, temporary accommodation for workers and operators, facility management, security, maintenance and performance monitoring.

The activation strategy will be implemented in phases, beginning with an inventory of available units, machinery and facilities, identification of priority industrial clusters, assessment of power requirements, establishment of Facility Management structures and identification of prospective Manufacturers, Processors and MSMEs.

The Second Phase will focus on onboarding suitable businesses, commencing production and introducing ITF-supported training programmes, while the third phase will provide for Infrastructure upgrades, Additional investment, expanded Industrial clusters and full operationalisation.

The Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment is expected to lead the development of a comprehensive activation plan in collaboration with Hub management, ITF and other relevant stakeholders.

The Lagos State Government said the Imota Industrial Hub is expected to deliver tangible benefits to surrounding communities through employment creation, MSME growth, Skills development, increased local production, investment attraction and stronger Local Supply Chains.

The Hub is also being positioned as a potential model for industrial development that can be replicated in other parts of Lagos State.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to moving from Industrial Policy to measurable Economic outcomes by activating existing Infrastructure, supporting businesses and creating an enabling Environment for production and investment.

The visit concluded with a clear directive to resolve immediate operational gaps, identify the first set of activities and occupants, and commence phased operations without unnecessary delay.

5000 CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM OAGH's BACK-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAMME IN FIVE YEARS

To underscore its commitment to the well-being of children, Orile Agege General Hospital has provided free medical and health care services to children with its Back-to-School Medical Outreach, which has been ongoing for the last five years.

The programme provides free healthcare services to children within the age range of five to 15 years to promote their social wellbeing and prepare them for better academic performance and a healthy and successful school session.

In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Olajide Dapo-Thomas, represented by Dr. Oladipupo Fisher, commended the management of Orile Agege General Hospital for organising this laudable programme. He appreciated the hospital for giving back to the community and providing the needed healthcare services to the children.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary applauded the efficiency of the hospital, its generosity and dedication to preserving human lives and impacting society positively. "I want to appreciate the management for promoting physical and psychological support for the School children and enjoined them to prioritise the importance of healthy living in children. I commended the children for their participation and wished the organisers and beneficiaries a successful programme," she said.

In her remarks, the Medical Director/CEO, Orile Agege General Hospital (OAGH), Dr. (Mrs.) Iyadunni Bakare, commended the management staff, partners, parents and children for their support and participation in the fifth edition of the Back-to-School Programme.

According to the Medical Director/CEO, "Over the years, the Back-To-School Medical Outreach, which began in 2022 as a community engagement programme, has continued to expand in scope and reach. It all started with a target of 1,000 participants in its first year, but recorded 1,350 participants by the end of the programme. By the second year, they increased their target to 1,500 and eventually reached 3000 participants in its fifth edition".

"Over the past five years, more than 5,000 participants have benefited from various screening and interventions, including free glasses, ear syringing, scaling, as well as counselling services. The programme has also grown into a community engagement that children look forward to every August as they prepare to return to school", Bakare added.

She explained that the growth of the programme has expanded to provide children with access to a wider range of healthcare services across various departments, which include Dental, ENT, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Social Welfare, Nutrition and HMIS.

Bakare added that the programme goes beyond routine screening, as it also provides interventions and psychological support for children facing one issue or the other, imploring all departments to work together to ensure the children are properly assessed.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman, Health Service Commission, Mr. Olukayode Oguntimehin, commended the Orile Agege General Hospital for sustaining the Back-To-School programme, describing the initiative as an effort towards improving the health and well-being of the children.

He noted that children are more vulnerable to health challenges, adding that proper attention to their health could contribute to a strong and healthy life and improve their chances of a successful future. He urged the hospital to sustain the initiative and suggested that the programme could be organised more than once a year to reach more children.

Oguntimehin described the programme as a social responsibility to the community, noting that as an institution operating within the community, it should be able to contribute to the well-being of its people. He concluded by appreciating the hospital staff and partners for their time, resources and contributions towards the success of the programme.

Dr. Abayomi Olubunmi Ogboye, Commissioner I, Health Service Commission, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, emphasising the importance of early detection in the treatment of health conditions, especially among children, as some health challenges could affect their development if left untreated. He noted that simple hearing and eye tests could reveal problems that may affect children's performance in school.

According to him, a child who cannot hear properly or see the board clearly could easily be perceived as dull or unintelligent, but the actual challenge may be a correctable health condition. He commended Orile Agege General Hospital and its partners for recognising the importance of addressing the health needs of children.

Partners equally expressed their support for the initiative and also commended the hospital for its continued commitment to the health and wellbeing of children.

One of the parents of the beneficiary, Mr. Oluwatosin from Abeokuta, Ogun State, expressed his gratitude to the sponsors, partners, management and members of the facility for the continuous dedication to the success of the programme annually and appealed to other hospitals in Nigeria to emulate the initiative to create a better society.

The programme features different activities, which included ongoing healthcare services by the hospital staff, a special presentation by the children and an "Ewi" presentation by Orisun Iye and cutting of cake to mark the fifth edition of the Back-To-School programme.

HEFAMAA OPENS NEW OFFICE IN AJAH TO IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY, SERVICE DELIVERY

The Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has opened a new office in Ajah, Lagos State, to bring its regulatory services closer to residents, healthcare providers and other stakeholders.

The initiative supports the Lagos State Government’s Ease of Doing Business policy by improving access to government services.

The office is located at No 1, Shop B9, Fountain Place, Addo Road, Ajah, Lagos State, and will serve residents and healthcare facilities in Ajah and neighbouring communities.

Speaking on the development, HEFAMAA Executive Secretary, Dr. Victoria Egunjobi said the new office would make the Agency’s services more accessible and convenient.

“The establishment of the Ajah office is part of our commitment to bringing HEFAMAA closer to the people and making it easier for our clients to access the services of the Agency,” she said.

The office will provide regulatory guidance, registration, accreditation, monitoring, and other services. It is also expected to improve communication, support timely resolution of concerns, and promote compliance with healthcare standards.

Reaffirming HEFAMAA’s commitment to ensuring that healthcare facilities in Lagos provide safe, quality and effective services, Dr. Egunjobi urged residents to patronise only registered and accredited health facilities and report suspected quackery, unregistered practice or other unethical conduct to the appropriate authorities.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Establishments and Training, Dr. Olubusola Abidakun, has charged participants of the Lagos State Public Service Accelerator Programme (PSAP) Cohort II to anchor their leadership journeys on strict discipline and unwavering resilience.

Speaking during an interactive mentoring session with the rising public service leaders, Dr. Abidakun emphasised that punctuality is a non-negotiable cornerstone of effective governance.

She noted that modelling high standards of time management not only earns professional respect but fundamentally shapes institutional culture.

"Leadership starts with timeliness. Timeliness opens the board for you," Dr. Abidakun stated. "In everything you do in life, patronise timeliness. Leadership is by example; you must set a standard that others can follow, especially in the area of timeliness."

Drawing from her extensive career trajectory, the Permanent Secretary offered candid reflections on the realities of navigating the civil service. She shared that professional advancement requires deep perseverance, recounting how she faced formidable hurdles 24 years ago upon joining the service - moments when early career pressures nearly led her to tender her resignation multiple times.

She credited her eventual success to steadfast endurance and a commitment to personal growth.

The mentoring session forms part of the ongoing capacity-building mandate of the Public Service Accelerator Programme, designed to equip high-potential state officers with the strategic vision, ethical grounding, and resilience required to drive modern public sector innovation.

LAGOS CELEBRATES SOPHIA EKERUCHE: WORLD’S BEST YOUTH FEMALE SCRABBLE PLAYER

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) hosted Wizkid Scrabble player Sophia Ekeruche of Team Lagos, the 15-year-old crowned the world's best female Scrabble player at the just-concluded World Youth Scrabble Championship held in Kenya this past August.

Hon. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, received the young champion in his office at Teslim Balogun Stadium. Expressing immense pride in her accomplishment, noting that she inspires not only her peers but also the Lagos State government, which continually emphasises youth education and sports development.

“The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through the Lagos State Sports Commission, is thrilled with your sterling performance,” Fatodu stated. “The government will continue to support outstanding athletes like you, especially in their education. Your success is a testament to the state government's investment in youth development through sports and academics.”

Sophia Ekeruche, a pupil of Ikorodu Senior High School who has received an invitation from the Nigeria Scrabble Federation to represent the country at the upcoming African Scrabble Championship in Liberia from October 15-18, 2026, is one of Nigeria’s promising young Scrabble players and an emerging force in African youth Scrabble.

At just 15 years of age, Sophia has distinguished herself through remarkable consistency, rapid tactical growth, and outstanding performances across national, continental, and international competitions.
