Ilaje Boat Regatta 2026 Showcases Culture, Tourism Potential in Ugbonla

UGBONLA, ILAJE LGA — April 4, 2026.

The waters of Ugbonla came alive on Saturday 4th April as the Ondo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism staged the 2026 Ilaje Boat Regatta, drawing dignitaries, traditional rulers, and thousands of spectators to the riverine community for a celebration of maritime heritage and economic vision.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa was represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Adesoji Afolabi, who led the state delegation. The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mrs. Foluke Aladelola, also addressed the gathering, while Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Hon. Oripenaye Maurice, attended with his wife, Chief Mrs. Adeola Oripenaye.

The host and spiritual leader of Ugbonla, Kabiesi Dr. Henry Mobolorunduro Ogunfeyimi — the Atari Oye Ajigbade Lene II and Imperial King of Zion — delivered the welcome address, describing the regatta as “a declaration of identity” and “a testimony that culture, when preserved and celebrated, becomes a bridge between the past, the present, and the future.”

Kabiesi Ogunfeyimi linked Ugbonla’s identity to its historic relationship with the lagoon: “Our fathers were fishermen, canoe carvers, traders and custodians of a rich maritime heritage.” He said the regatta goes beyond cultural display to drive local enterprise, youth engagement, women’s participation in trade and hospitality, and skills development in marine craftsmanship.

In a spiritual reflection, the he said the event fulfilled a prophecy made years earlier by the late Imperial King of Zion, St. Dr. Elisha Lene Ogunfeyimi, who foretold “a great gathering by the waters, drawing leaders, dignitaries, and multitudes together in celebration and purpose.” Quoting Habakkuk 2:3 — “For the vision is yet for an appointed time… though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come” — he declared the regatta “a dream fulfilled.”
Vision for a Marine Tourism Corridor
The monarch used the occasion to present the Ugbonla Tourism & Marine Economic Corridor.
Key proposals include:
• Shoreline protection: Construction of concrete piling and a beach road along the Ugbonla shoreline to curb erosion caused by increasing speed-boat traffic.
• Hospitality infrastructure: Development of hotels and guest houses across the lagoon, linked by structured ferry services to create a holiday resort zone.
• River-bank aquaculture: Establishment of organized fishing and fish-farming initiatives along the lagoon to modernize traditional livelihoods and boost food security.
“These projects would generate internally generated revenue, create employment for our youths and women, and position Ugbonla as a marine tourism hub,” Kabiesi Ogunfeyimi said, adding that community institutions — churches, traditional councils, youth and women’s groups — “stand ready for partnership.”

The strong representation from the Ondo State Government underscored the event’s tourism significance. Members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, security agencies, and members of the press were also present.

Ilaje LGA Chairman Hon. Oripenaye Maurice commended the ministry for choosing Ugbonla and praised the peaceful coordination of the event. Kabiesi Ogunfeyimi closed with a prayer that “the waters of Ugbonla bring prosperity,” urging that the regatta “not be a one-time spectacle but the foundation of a lasting legacy.”

The 2026 Ilaje Boat Regatta featured canoe parades, cultural displays, and marine exhibitions highlighting Ilaje’s boat-carving and fishing traditions. Organizers said the event aligns with Ondo State’s broader push to diversify its economy through cultural tourism.
