NIGERIA PARTICIPATES IN THE 8TH GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY (GEF) ASSEMBLY IN SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN

Nigeria is actively participating in the 8th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where delegates from 186 member countries are gathering to strengthen global cooperation and accelerate action on biodiversity conservation, climate change, pollution reduction and sustainable development ahead of the 2030 environmental targets.

The Nigerian delegation is led by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and includes the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Zacharia B. Yaduma and other key stakeholders in environment and Forestry.

A major highlight of the Assembly is the announcement of a new partnership aimed at supporting African Keystone Protected Areas, providing opportunities for African countries, including Nigeria, to access enhanced environmental financing for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection.

Discussions are also focusing on the achievements of the GEF-8 cycle and shaping priorities for GEF-9, with emphasis on climate resilience, sustainable financing and nature-positive development.
Nigeria's participation underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability and positions the country to benefit from emerging partnerships and funding opportunities that will support conservation, ecosystem restoration and climate action initiatives nationwide.

The FAO-GEF7 FOLUR-IP Nigeria Project, in collaboration with FRIN and key stakeholders, hosted a two-day workshop titled “Advancing Deforestation-Free Finance in Nigeria’s Banking Sector: From Roadmap to Implementation” from 20–21 May 2026 at Protea Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The workshop brought together representatives from banks, policymakers, development partners, agribusinesses, and environmental organizations to explore innovative financing solutions that promote sustainable agriculture while safeguarding Nigeria’s forests and ecosystems.

Discussions focused on key thematic areas including deforestation-free finance, sustainable cocoa and oil palm production, Eco-Credit and other green financing models, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, climate-smart agricultural investments, and strategic partnerships for sustainable development.

The event attracted high-level stakeholders, including Hugh Briggs, PM Agriculture, EU Nigeria and West Africa; the Representative of the Honourable Minister of Environment and Chair, PSC, Hajia Halima Bawa Bwari; Dr. Husseini Gadain, FAO Representative in Nigeria; the Representative of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mrs. Amina Bello; the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Prof. Zacharia Buba Yaduma; Hajia Iyabo Mustapha Lawal, Co-Chair, PSC; alongside several other distinguished participants.

The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between the financial sector and environmental stakeholders, fostering responsible investments, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term forest conservation in Nigeria. The workshop further reinforces a shared commitment to advancing sustainable land-use practices and building resilient, environmentally responsible financing systems for the future.

The International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) is currently holding its 4th International Conference at the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources Management, College of Agriculture and Renewable Natural Resources Management, Osun State University, from 19th to 21st May, 2026.

The conference, themed “Forest Ecosystem Conservation: A Roadmap for Resilient Economies and Environmental Sustainability,” brought together renowned academics, researchers and stakeholders in the forestry and environmental sectors to discuss sustainable approaches to forest conservation and natural resource management.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Labode Popoola, who emphasized the critical role of forest ecosystem conservation in promoting economic resilience and environmental sustainability across Africa and beyond.

The Director-General of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Prof. Zacharia Buba Yaduma, in his goowill message said "sustainable forest management is not merely an environmental obligation but a strategic pathway towards building resilient economies and securing a sustainable future for generations yet unborn." In recognition of his outstanding contributions to forest conservation, environmental sustainability, and sustainable natural resource management, he was presented with the Environmental Stewardship Award by Prof. S. O. Akindele.

Lead papers at the conference were presented by Prof. Bamidele Zira Danquah on “Forest Policy and Governance for Sustainable Forest Management Towards National Economic Development,” and Prof. Oluwakayode Ogunsanwo, who was represented by Dr. Babajide Falemara.

The Meteorological Section of the Environmental Modelling and Biometrics Department, under the leadership of Dr. Mrs. Ofordu organized a send-forth ceremony in honour of Dr. Ayeni Olatunji David, the immediate past Head of the Department, following his recent retirement from active service.

Today marks a significant milestone in the workshop process, as the outcomes and key resolutions from the previous sessions will be consolidated and presented to Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Executive Governor of Ondo State. The presentation is intended to serve as a strategic roadmap for the development and implementation of the State’s Land Use Plan and Land Use Map, guiding sustainable land management and informed policy decisions.
