NIGERIA PARTICIPATES IN THE 8TH GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY (GEF) ASSEMBLY IN SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN
Nigeria is actively participating in the 8th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly taking place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where delegates from 186 member countries are gathering to strengthen global cooperation and accelerate action on biodiversity conservation, climate change, pollution reduction and sustainable development ahead of the 2030 environmental targets.
The Nigerian delegation is led by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and includes the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Zacharia B. Yaduma and other key stakeholders in environment and Forestry.
A major highlight of the Assembly is the announcement of a new partnership aimed at supporting African Keystone Protected Areas, providing opportunities for African countries, including Nigeria, to access enhanced environmental financing for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection.
Discussions are also focusing on the achievements of the GEF-8 cycle and shaping priorities for GEF-9, with emphasis on climate resilience, sustainable financing and nature-positive development.
Nigeria's participation underscores its commitment to environmental sustainability and positions the country to benefit from emerging partnerships and funding opportunities that will support conservation, ecosystem restoration and climate action initiatives nationwide.
