*Oyo Concludes NEWMAP-EIB Site Inspection, Set for Project Implementation*

The Oyo State Government has concluded the final inspection of proposed project sites under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project – European Investment Bank (NEWMAP‑EIB) intervention across the three senatorial zones of the state, ahead of the commencement of construction works.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who led the inspection team, said the visit marked the concluding phase of the assessment of project locations selected for the NEWMAP-EIB intervention.

According to the Commissioner, the State Government has fulfilled the necessary requirements for the take-off of the project, expressing optimism that the intervention will soon commence.

He noted that the successful completion of the preparatory processes was made possible through the passion, commitment and support of the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, towards addressing erosion challenges, climate change adaptation and improving environmental sustainability across the state.

Hon. Aderinto assured residents of the affected communities that with the completion of all necessary requirements, the NEWMAP-EIB project is now set to commence implementation.

During the visit, the Commissioner and members of the inspection team also interacted with residents and stakeholders in the project-affected communities, many of whom expressed appreciation to the state government and their eagerness for the commencement of the intervention.

The Commissioner reiterated the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the success and sustainability of the project.

While speaking during the inspection, he also advised residents to desist from practices such as open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly around streams and waterways, noting that such activities could undermine environmental safety and the effectiveness of erosion control projects.

Sites inspected during the visit included Aborerin stream, Eruwa, (Ibarapa East Local Government Area), Fedomu stream, Igbeti, (Olorunsogo Local Government Area) and erosion sites within Ladoke Akintola University of Technology(LAUTECH)in Ogbomoso.

The inspection exercise formed part of the concluding activities ahead of the commencement of the NEWMAP-EIB intervention project across the state.

The Commissioner was accompanied on the inspection visit by the Project Coordinator, Barr. Tayo Ayoade, and members of the Oyo State Project Management Unit (Oyo NEWMAP-EIB).
