OYO ASSEMBLY: D-AL-AMEEN MOVES MOTION FOR SPECIAL CRIMINAL DIVISIONS TO FAST-TRACK JUSTICE DELIVERY

The Oyo State House of Assembly Member representing Ibadan North-West State Constituency, Hon. (Dr.) Dawood Akanni Olalere, popularly known as D-Al-Ameen, has moved a motion on the Need for the Establishment of Special Criminal Divisions within the Oyo State High Court for the Speedy Trial of Criminal Cases and Strengthening of the Administration of Criminal Justice.

While presenting the motion before the House, Hon. D-Al-Ameen stressed that an effective administration of criminal justice is fundamental to the maintenance of law and order, protection of lives and property, preservation of public confidence in the judiciary, and effective enforcement of the law.

He noted that the timely adjudication of criminal cases remains indispensable to ensuring that justice is not only done but is manifestly seen to be done.

The lawmaker acknowledged the commitment and diligence of judicial officers in Oyo State but observed that the High Courts presently exercise jurisdiction over both civil and criminal matters. According to him, this has contributed to congested court dockets, frequent adjournments and prolonged criminal trials, thereby delaying justice for victims, defendants and society at large.

Hon. D-Al-Ameen further observed that the swift prosecution and determination of criminal cases serve as a powerful deterrent against crime, reinforce public confidence in the justice system, discourage impunity and ensure that perpetrators of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, murder, r**e, cultism and other heinous offences face the full weight of the law without undue delay.

He expressed concern that unless deliberate institutional reforms are undertaken to prioritise the hearing and determination of criminal cases, particularly those involving serious offences, Oyo State may continue to experience avoidable delays in justice delivery, overcrowding of custodial centres, prolonged detention of awaiting-trial inmates and a weakened deterrent effect of the criminal justice system.

Resolutions of the House

Following the presentation of the motion, the House resolved to urge the Chief Judge of Oyo State and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to take necessary steps towards the establishment of Special Criminal Divisions within the Oyo State High Court for the speedy and exclusive hearing and determination of serious criminal matters, including kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, murder, r**e, cultism and other grave offences.

The House also urged the Executive Arm of Government to provide adequate financial, technological and administrative support for the effective operation of the proposed Special Criminal Divisions. Such support should include digital case-management systems, electronic recording facilities and the provision of sufficient judicial personnel.

The Executive was further urged to provide adequate funding for witness-protection programmes, victim-support services and free legal aid for indigent defendants, in order to encourage cooperation with the justice system while safeguarding the constitutional right to a fair trial.

The House also called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies operating in the state to expedite criminal investigations and ensure the prompt transmission of case files to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, thereby preventing unnecessary delays in the commencement and prosecution of criminal cases.

Finally, the Committee on Public Petitions, Justice and Judiciary, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and the Judiciary, was mandated to monitor the implementation of the initiative and report progress to the House.

Hon. D-Al-Ameen emphasised that the establishment of Special Criminal Divisions would strengthen the administration of criminal justice in Oyo State, improve the efficiency of the courts, reduce delays in criminal trials and enhance public confidence in the justice system.

A New Month, A Renewed Hope for Security and Peace β€” Hon. (Dr.) Dawood Akanni Olalere

As we welcome the month of June, I extend my warm greetings and heartfelt wishes to the good people of Ibadan Northwest/Southwest Federal Constituency and Nigerians at large.

While a new month often comes with joy and renewed expectations, it is difficult to ignore the painful security challenges confronting our nation. The continued incidents of kidnapping, violent crimes, and threats to the safety of innocent citizens remain a source of concern to all well-meaning Nigerians. My thoughts and prayers are particularly with the families of the abducted teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area and all others currently facing similar ordeals across the country.

As a people, we must not lose hope. I believe that through collective efforts, stronger security measures, and sincere commitment from all stakeholders, Nigeria can overcome these challenges and restore lasting peace to our communities. Security remains the foundation upon which development, economic growth, and social progress can thrive.

I encourage our people to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and supportive of security agencies in their efforts to protect lives and property. Let us continue to promote unity, peaceful coexistence, and community cooperation as we confront the challenges before us.

As we begin this new month, I pray for the safe return of all those in captivity, comfort for affected families, protection for our communities, and wisdom for our leaders at all levels of government. May June bring renewed hope, peace, security, and prosperity to every household.

Together, we shall overcome our challenges and build a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Nigeria for present and future generations.

Happy New Month.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the Inter-House Sport sports program in my Constituency Ibadan Northwest at Army Day High School, Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola, Ibadan.

It was a colorful and exciting event filled with energy, teamwork, and healthy competition among the students.

The different houses competed passionately in various sporting activities, showcasing their talents, discipline, and sportsmanship.

The program was well organized, and the atmosphere was lively as parents, teachers, and guests gathered to support and cheer for the students. Beyond the competition, the event promoted unity, confidence, and physical fitness among the pupils.

It was truly a memorable experience, and I was impressed by the level of coordination, enthusiasm, and determination displayed by the participants. Events like this play an important role in encouraging young people to develop teamwork, leadership skills, and a spirit of excellence.
