South-West Development Commission and DAWN Commission Forge Strategic Alliance to Accelerate Regional Growth

The South-West Development Commission (SWDC) and the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission have formalized a strategic partnership designed to deepen coordinated development across the South-West region.

The collaboration was cemented on 20/11/2025 during a courtesy visit by SWDC’s executive management team, led by the Managing Director, Dr. Charles ’Diji Akinola, to the DAWN Commission headquarters at Cocoa House, Ibadan. The engagement marks the beginning of a mutually beneficial institutional relationship between both bodies.

Under this new alliance, the two organisations will initially focus on key priority areas including agricultural modernization, railway and transport infrastructure, human and social capital development, industrialization, and advancements in technology and innovation. Both institutions have reaffirmed their commitment to reducing duplication, harmonising initiatives, and ensuring more efficient use of resources to deliver greater regional impact.

Dr. Akinola was accompanied by key members of SWDC Executive Management team including Rt. Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, Executive Director, Corporate Services; Hon. Tele Ogunjobi FCA, Executive Director, Finance; and Hon. Fatai Ibikunle, Executive Director, Commerce and Environmental Development.

This partnership represents a significant step toward a more integrated development ecosystem in the South West, with both organisations aligned in their mission to deliver measurable improvements in the lives of the region’s nearly 40 million people.

Today marks the inauguration of the South-West Development Commission Board.

Our mandate is clear: to build an integrated regional economy across the six South-West states as one bloc driven by innovation, quality education, accessible healthcare, youth and women advancement, modern infrastructure, and thriving industries.

We are focused on delivering measurable impact and creating a globally competitive South-West that contributes significantly to Nigeria’s prosperity.

Last Thursday, July 31st, 2025, marked a significant milestone, as the pioneer leadership of the South West Development Commission (SWDC) held its inaugural Executive Management Meeting, setting a clear agenda for the region’s growth through strategic collaboration, innovation, and impactful development.

The meeting was chaired by the Managing Director, Dr. Charles 'Diji Akinola, with the Executive Management Team:
• Olugbenga Olufehinti, Executive Director, Projects
• Tele Ogunjobi, Executive Director, Finance
• Funmilayo Tejuoso, Executive Director, Corporate Services
• Fatai Ibikunle, Executive Director, Commercial and Environmental Development
• Lateef Ajijola, Executive Director, Social and Human Capital Development

Following the meeting, the team paid courtesy visits to Oodua Investment Company and the DAWN Commission, both headquartered in Cocoa House, Ibadan, reaffirming SWDC’s commitment to strategic regional partnerships and institution building from the outset.

On Tuesday, 29th July 2025, the Chairman of the South West Development Commission (SWDC), Sen. Olubunmi Adetunmbi, and the Managing Director, Dr. Charles Akinola, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE.

During the meeting, Hon Minister Momoh underscored the importance of early engagement and strategic synergy in establishing a strong foundation for the Commission’s success. He urged the leadership to prioritise collaboration and a unified vision as they prepare to take on their full responsibilities.

As the SWDC awaits its formal inauguration, this strategic meeting establishes a foundation for proactive and coordinated leadership, dedicated to unlocking the socio-economic potential of the South West geopolitical zone.

As part of the Commission’s commitment to strengthening agriculture and food security in the region, the Managing Director, Dr. Charles Akinola, and the Executive Director of Projects, Mr. Segun Olufehinti, held a strategic meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Nigeria Representative, Dr. Husein Gadain and his team.

Discussions focused on key areas for collaboration to advance agriculture in the SouthWest, including:

🔹 Data, research, and innovation
🔹 Capacity building
🔹 Investment in priority value chains such as coconut, cocoa, and beef

We are optimistic about the next steps and look forward to a strong, results driven partnership with FAO to transform food systems across the region.
