ZEA Facilitates Installation of 800 Solar Streetlights Across Zamfara's Tertiary Institutions to Bolster Security and Visibility

In response to growing security concerns and recent disturbing incidents affecting educational institutions across the country, the Zamfara Electrification Agency (ZEA) has facilitated, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the installation of 800 solar-powered streetlights across key tertiary institutions and public facilities in Zamfara State. The overriding objective is to significantly improve visibility and strengthen security on campuses, protecting students, staff, and property.

This timely intervention aligns with the vision of His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, to safeguard learning environments by deploying sustainable infrastructure that directly addresses safety challenges. By lighting up previously dark areas with clean, renewable energy, the project creates a safer atmosphere for night-time movement, deters criminal activity, and provides a more secure setting for academic and social life.

Breakdown of the Solar Streetlight Installations:

· Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda – 100 solar streetlights
· Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara – 118 solar streetlights
· Federal College of Education (Technical), Gusau – 100 solar streetlights
· Federal Medical Centre, Gusau – 118 solar streetlights
· College of Education, Maru – 118 solar streetlights
· Zamfara State University, Talata Mafara – 118 solar streetlights
· Federal University Gusau – 118 solar streetlights

Total Installed: 800 Solar Streetlights

This landmark intervention reflects the unwavering commitment of the Zamfara State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, to proactively securing public spaces and educational facilities amid rising national security challenges. Beyond illumination, the solar streetlights enhance round-the-clock visibility, support faster response to security threats, and reassure students, staff, and visitors of their safety.

The Zamfara State Electrification Agency remains dedicated to partnering with relevant stakeholders to deliver impactful renewable energy projects that not only advance development but, crucially, protect lives and property across Zamfara State.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE NET BILLING REGULATIONS 2026

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) hereby notifies electricity consumers, distribution companies, renewable energy developers, commercial and industrial customers, and the general public of the commencement of the Net Billing Regulations 2026.

The Regulations establish a framework that enables eligible electricity customers (Prosumers) to generate electricity from renewable energy sources, primarily solar photovoltaic systems, for their own consumption and export surplus energy to the distribution network under a Net Billing Arrangement.

The objectives of the Net Billing Regulations 2026 are to:

Promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies.
- Enhance energy security and reliability for electricity consumers.
- Encourage private sector participation in distributed generation.
- Support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Facilitate efficient integration of renewable energy systems into distribution networks.

Customers seeking to participate in the Net Billing Scheme must:

* Be connected to a Distribution Licensee's network.
* Install renewable energy systems that comply with applicable technical standards and regulatory requirements.
*Renewable Energy System (RES) with minimum installed capacity of 50 kilowatt peak (kWp) and a maximum of 1.5 Megawatt peak (MWp)
* Obtain approval from the relevant Distribution Licensee.
* Execute a Net Billing Agreement and register with the Commission.

Interested customers are required to apply to their Distribution Licensee for a technical feasibility assessment.
Upon approval and ex*****on of a Net Billing Agreement, the provisions of the Regulations.

Approved participants shall be provided with appropriate bidirectional net metering facilities to measure electricity imported from and exported to the distribution network. Exported energy shall be credited in accordance with the export tariff approved by the Commission.

Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) hands over shinkafi Solar mini-grid to Zamfara Electrification Agency (ZEA)

A major milestone for rural electrification in Zamfara State.

The Federal Government, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), has officially handed over the 200KW Shinkafi Hybrid Solar Mini Grid to the Zamfara State Government, represented by the Zamfara Electrification Agency (ZEA). Originally built in 2022, the mini grid was only operational for a few months before it was vandalised, cutting short its transformative promise for the community.

Now, the Zamfara Electrification Agency will spearhead the rehabilitation of the grid and put robust measures in place to ensure its maximum utilisation and long-term sustainability. Once restored, this project will once again expand access to reliable, clean energy, stimulate local economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for the people of Shinkafi.

Together, we are turning setbacks into a comeback—powering a brighter, greener, and more prosperous Zamfara.
