Senator Dankwambo Honoured with Distinguished Alumni Award by UNILAG Alumni Association

The atmosphere was one of admiration and celebration on Friday at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, as the University of Lagos Alumni Association honoured Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, Ph.D., OON, with the Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements, visionary leadership, and immense contributions to accounting, governance, and public service in Nigeria and beyond.

The colourful event attracted dignitaries from government, academia, business, and the development community who gathered to celebrate a man widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected reformers — a leader whose career exemplifies integrity, excellence, and transformative leadership.

Born on April 4, 1962, in Gombe State, Senator Dankwambo has distinguished himself as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public administrators and financial reformers. A proud alumnus of the University of Lagos, he holds degrees in Accounting, Economics, and Business Administration, as well as a Ph.D. in Accounting.

He is a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), and the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) — a reflection of his professional depth and versatility.

Senator Dankwambo began his illustrious career at Coopers & Lybrand International (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) before joining the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where he gained extensive experience in financial regulation and monetary management. His brilliance and dedication soon earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s brightest young accountants.

In 1999, he became the Accountant-General of Gombe State, where he introduced reforms that enhanced transparency, fiscal discipline, and efficiency in public finance management. His sterling performance led to his appointment in 2005 as the Accountant-General of the Federation, making him one of the youngest Nigerians ever to hold the position.

As Accountant-General of the Federation, Dankwambo implemented far-reaching reforms that modernised Nigeria’s financial systems. Notably, he pioneered the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) — two innovations that revolutionised accountability and transparency in the public sector.

He also championed Nigeria’s adoption of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), aligning national accounting practices with international best standards and further cementing his status as a visionary reformer.

In 2011, Dankwambo was elected Governor of Gombe State, serving two terms until 2019. His administration was defined by inclusive governance, infrastructural development, and a deep commitment to education, youth empowerment, and social welfare. Under his leadership, Gombe became a model of peace, progress, and prudent management in Northern Nigeria.

Now representing Gombe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Dankwambo continues to demonstrate his dedication to national growth through legislative advocacy in economic reform, education, and youth development.

Beyond national boundaries, Dankwambo has represented Nigeria at several international platforms including the World Bank, IMF, and African Development Bank (AfDB) forums, where he consistently champions accountability and good governance across Africa.

He has earned numerous national and international honours, including Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and multiple lifetime achievement awards from professional and civic organisations.

Presenting the award, Engr. (Dr.) Ifeoluwa Oyedele, President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, praised Senator Dankwambo as “a beacon of excellence whose life and career embody the University’s core values of scholarship, integrity, and service to humanity.”

In his remarks, Senator Dankwambo expressed gratitude to the Alumni Association for the recognition, dedicating the honour to “all Nigerians committed to honest service, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence.” He reaffirmed his lifelong commitment to education, transparency, and youth empowerment as essential pillars of national progress.

From his formative years at PwC and the Central Bank to his transformative leadership as Accountant-General, Governor, and now Senator, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo stands as a symbol of purpose-driven leadership, institutional reform, and enduring excellence.

As the applause filled the Eko Hotel ballroom, it was clear that the Distinguished Alumni Award celebrated not just a man’s achievements but a legacy of accountability, innovation, and hope for generations to come.

Farewell to a General: Muhammadu Buhari
1942 – 2025

Today, Nigeria bows its head in remembrance of a man who stood tall through decades of national service—President Muhammadu Buhari.

From Daura’s dry winds to the stormy tides of Nigerian politics, his life was a journey marked by discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering convictions.

He wore many hats: soldier, statesman, reformer, and farmer. As a military ruler and later as a civilian president, he occupied the nation’s highest seat twice—each time with a mission shaped by the times, and by his personal sense of duty.

President Buhari promised to fight corruption, confront insecurity, and instill discipline in governance. His tenure sparked both praise and critique—but no honest history of Nigeria can ignore the footprint he left behind.

To some, he was a symbol of integrity. To others, a distant leader in turbulent times. Yet even in silence, his presence was felt. Even in controversy, he remained unshaken in his beliefs.

Nigeria’s democracy grew under his watch. Its challenges deepened too. But one thing is certain: Muhammadu Buhari was not just a witness to Nigeria’s story—he was one of its central figures.

As he was laid to rest, we remember the elder, the patriot, the father, the husband. We remember a man who, in his own way, tried to steady the ship of a restless nation.

May Allah overlook his flaws.
May He accept his efforts.
And may our nation move closer to justice, unity, and peace—the things he once stood for.

Sleep well, Baba.
Your chapter in our story is written in bold.
